Since Chicago Tattoo has been on the same 2 blocks for almost 40 years we get alot of people who come in with old work from Cliff Raven and Dale Grande so i try to take photos of these tattoos to document them. I often see old timers walking around the neighborhood or in the grocery store and see their tattoos and try to ask about them and photo them, there is just something about talking to old dudes about their tattoos that gets their attention and for the most part gets them into talking about where they got in and when and sometimes they can remember who it was. Im sure we all do this so i wanted to start a little thread and put up pics of old tattoos that we have all documented. The first three tattoos where done at Cliff Raven Studios (Chicago Tattoo) by Cliff Raven in approximately 1970.. since i cant figure out how to make these images larger you can click on them to get a better look. i look forward to the pics Nick

Heading to Oakland, California to see Freddy Corbin at Temple tattoo to get inked for our 25th wedding anniversary. Appointment is noon, Tuesday. Daniel Higgs did the original wedding tattoos at Realistic Studio in San Francisco and Freddy was in the shop watching and making comments while he was doing us. Daniel doesn't do tattoos any more. So our first choice is Freddy to keep spiritual continuity. The wife and me are getting a "25-XXV added somewhere . I am also getting a "Dragon" mixed into it... I'll keep you up to date.

Ok, here is the pattern as far as I see it. Ed Hardy is an amazing artist, but he was virtually unknown outside the world of tattooing for a long time. Ami James (and all the other reality guys and girls on varied shows) introduced tattooing to the "normal" folk, and it became accepted as part of main stream society. So who has had a greater influence on the world of tattooing - as a whole ? Remember most of the people who buy Ed Hardy merchandise will never be tattooed, and while his images are iconic, there is more non Ed Hardy tattoo clothing that there is stuff produced by his companies. Has he had a greater impact on fashion that he has on tattooing. Did reality TV start the growth, or did Ed Hardy ? Did Ed Hardy pick up where reality left off? How do you see the story and when and where do you see it ending???

I ended up at the 'Tattoo the World' release last night in NYC. I've commented a few times on other social networking posts, but... it's surreal to be the most visibly tattooed person at an Ed Hardy event. They had some of his art on display but no copies of the film. Which was weird for a release event!

So I was in a local book-store yesterday looking through tattoo related publications, and I found a book titled "Ed Hardy Cross Stitch Patterns". I know lots of people love Ed Hardy, and I respect his tattooing and his contribution to the industry, but come, does he and the guys who own the licence to his images want to make money out of everything. It occurred to me, that when they are finished they will knock out a line of Ed Hardy toilet paper, just so they can wipe their ass on the industry one last time. Sorry, I know you guys love the man, but I am sick of seeing the Ed Hardy EVERYWHERE.

My wife and I went to this yesterday: SF MOMA Artists Gallery: The Unruly Art of Ed Hardy. Really incredible stuff, much of which I'd never seen or only seen in books. He had lots of tiger depictions, too--always a plus for me. Anyone else here seen the show?

I know most of you are well aware of Mr. C.W. Eldridge's importance as tattooer/historian/historical figure himself, but just wanted to toss up a quick little link to his Tattoo Archive home page which is a phenomenal resource. Just ordered a couple new things from here as well as from Book Mistress. It's so important that histories are preserved but I feel privileged to be allowed access to what will one day be called sacred texts and secret histories..if they're not already. As I'm not a tattooer, it feels extra tough to be taken seriously when it comes to anything tattoo-related –– as it should be –– so I'm just glad Mr. Eldridge doesn't discriminate when it comes to both preserving as well as educating. Also a great quick online reference. Thank you sir. One day I'll get down to NC.
