@Breakme beer o'clock indeed. Time to savor beer, enjoy the after glow of getting another tattoo and hate you because I have an addiction to Aussie accents. I did however finally figure out the differences between AFL and rugby league and rugby union...ten days on a European cruise I was like the only American ah it was great. So funny how we UK/Aussies speak the same language but its a completely different form of the same language.

I agree. We even the best of us are used to speaking and assuming about our own culture and unless we pay specific attention to the fact that now forums are becoming more global we're bound to end up making assumptions that viewed by our own culture would seem to make sense while to others would seem ludicrous. I will say this I am glad that while in school and as an adult I've been exposed to many cultures. I've had the pleasure of being in central America and Europe on more than one occasion, the last time was last fall so it helps me remember that although we all have a common bond be it with tattoos or speaking english we are very different in our own respects. I think one issue that we as Americans have is that we don't have a culture so to speak. We are a conglomerate of everyone so there is far less tradition especially if you leave the southern states. Not so say that the west coast or east coast don't have respect but there isn't that underlying understanding that just because you can do/ask/say doesn't mean you should do/ask/say. - - - Updated - - - Oh I'm drinking beer and eating red meat its well now the 5th of july but fuck it lol

Oh sorry. I wasn't trying to be unfriendly. I was still in the mindset of going off of what is the norm here stateside. Most forums I'm apart of are primarily US/Canadian so it takes me a second to remember things are different elsewhere. I also was meaning the whats so offensive more as a rhetorical question so thats why I asked what question did I ask. That was on me. I indicated your view was snobbish before I saw you were from Austrailia. Now it makes sense especially in light of the other thread I read about tipping and the fact most of my friends from the UK and Austrailia have markedly different views on things such as that than we do here.

I have had my fingers, sides of my hands and then the outside of my pointer fingers done in the past three months and I can say that my most recent was better than the others done by the guy I normally have do mine. It wasn't that it was less painful it was just more efficient to me and there wasn't ever that moment where it felt like he was digging into my skin. I know my most recent he said that he used the smallest needle(I know jack and shit about the mechanics of tattoo guns) and thats why it may have been more painful and taken longer but it was the best way to insure a good result. But I have nothing really to judge this off of.

No trust me I can see where you are coming from in regards to the respect issue. I would not ask that question to someone because I was raised in the south and there are something you just don't say or do because of old fashion traditions and ass whoopings BUT I know not everyone is raised like I was. Also I just in general don't get offended by things because it doesn't serve me any purpose to get all upset over words from generally someone I don't even know.

Oh I get that and I see you're from Austrailia and I do know that generally discussing money, tips etc is frowned upon in a lot of other countries compared to the US and Canada. I was basing my answer off of what it would be in America. The whole adage of good tattoos aren't cheap is so overplayed. As if something that is inexpensive clearly cannot be good. I think its stobbish to think someone who doesn't have tattoos and knows nothing of them should know this apparent "unwritten" rule about asking what something cost. Have you ever stopped to think they think it looks really good and assume it must have cost a fortune. Maybe its just curiosity. Its no different than anyone say going into a different culture and possibly asking or doing things that to those in the know is offensive but to that person they have no ill will they are just curious and don't know it could offend some. If someone ask what it cost for my hands, wrist etc not once have I thought "oh the nerve of that person, how dare they ask such a question regarding my magnificent artistic work" As I said before it stinks of being a snob to me.

I had never heard of the term till I joined this site the other day. I have 11 tattoos but hardly any friends who have either a lot of ink, want more or are really into them so I had no idea there was this whole other set of terms with regards to tattoo. I'm not sure whether I'd be a collector or not since I've got 11 and 10 of which I've gotten at the same place by two different people over the past year. I always go in knowing exactly what I want, where and why and whether its actually feasible. Now my next when I start on my half sleeve on my left arm I'm going in with a few general ideas of what I want and then let her just run with it and have fun being creative. To me I get tattoos for a myriad of reasons. One I like them, two I like how I look with them, three they do mean something to me, four the pain is fun and I like being idk its hard to describe but its like when you try to explain why you keep getting tattoos to someone who has none, theres a sense of being part of a group(not the same as the people with generic tribal bands around their arms lol)

I will never understand why people give a shit what people think. Is what they are saying is valid then why be upset, accept the truth and deal with it. If what they are saying is not valid then who cares. People have the right to have opinions, you have the right to ignore them. Choosing to let them bother you is purely your choice and a poor one at that. Yep. One second its not a big deal and then it hits for me right near the knuckle and it does sting a bit. But its not sore anymore. None of mine have ever been sore after the first day though. I do have a really high pain tolerance though I've broken my hand twice and my foot and big toe and none of those did I get set or take pain meds for so I guess that might explain why none have ever been sore more than 24hrs. Somewhat odd to me is that my hands have itched the least. My forearms and wrist itched like a motherfucker. I have no desire to find out how bad the cuticle and webbing feels lol

I agree. All the ones I have so far do have a specific meaning but at least my half sleeve on my left arm and eventually my right will be just artistic. I actually stumbled upon this site by accident. I had been looking for a forum like this for a while and had given up and last night I forgot what I searched for but this came up and I was like 'well awesome found what I stopped looking for by accident'

Most likely I'm just going to give them a few general ideas and then let them come up with something. My half sleeve will be more just for aesthetics not so much having a specific meaning. I'm good with broad concepts but I figure why not basically let them bring me what they put together based off of the few general ideas/concepts I have and go from there. There is one woman who has done a lot of friends that my mom knows and I forget the other womans name that has done a lot of a friend of mines work but she works out of Austin.

Well I'm a current college student majoring in psych with an emphasis on neuroscience and personality disorders. I've got 11 tattoos now. Got my first right after graduating from Marine Corps boot camp in 04 then since last june I've gotten ten with the most recent being yesterday afternoon. I've got my shoulder, forearms, wrist, fingers and hands done and the only one that was even remotely painful was the one I just got on the outside of my pointer fingers right where the first knuckle is at the start of the finger. Only one thats ever actually been sore after getting it. And then again near the second knuckle on my left finger because of how close it came that part made me wince a bit but overall it was no big deal at all. I keep waiting for one to hurt bad enough I want to say stop.

I took a rather round about way to getting my hands done. I got my first tattoo right after I turned 18 and graduated from Marine Corps boot camp on my shoulder. From that moment on I had always wanted more but I just didn't have any idea what I wanted. I knew I wanted more but I wasn't going to just get something for the sake of getting something. I waited almost 10 years till I got my next tattoo and since last june I've gone from having one to now having 11 but all of them have meaning even down to which part of the body they are on. I finally decided to do my hands starting with the outside of my hands because I will be a student for the next 7yrs. Two more for undergrad and 5 for grad school to get my PhD in psych. Since I'm lucky enough to be able to use the GiBill and thus not have to work during school I'm in an environment where I will be judged by my academics and aptitude first and foremost. I also have found that when you can give exact reasons for your tattoos people who may have negatively viewed visible ink before change their opinion. I also think though that because generally I only interact with other students and faculty they are generally more likely to be open minded and judge you based off of your intellect not your looks. The last reason I chose to go ahead with getting my hands done is that I plan on doing research primarily which means I won't generally be dealing with the public and the little practicing I may end up doing would be for fellow veterans which will not take issue with me having tattoos in visible places. In the end I think its how you carry yourself that determines how people view your tattoos. If you're well spoken, polite and generally a decent human being all but the most close minded will probably end up either liking your art or just dismissing it as a whole as something thats immaterial.
