slang terms that make you cringe?
ShawnPorter replied to JAllen's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
The guy who did this tattoo owns a shop. People pay money to him to do tattoos on them. That makes him a professional tattoo artist. If he's more "in the know" in the tattoo world than I am because I don't tattoo... so be it. In the immortal words of one of my snarkier friends... "your team!" :D -
slang terms that make you cringe?
ShawnPorter replied to JAllen's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
Though we had a brief flirtation with trying to get Fratbros (fratbroz?) to call tattooers "Squids" cause they "fuckin shoot ink, man"... but that never really worked out. Would have loved to send in a bro to one of my friends and have them address him as a Squid. Haha -

slang terms that make you cringe?
ShawnPorter replied to JAllen's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
I never liked "Jap". Not even because of the obvious cultural insensitivity issue. Just sounds crass. Hmm. Tatty-balls, Tatballs. Socks for leg tattoos. -
I guess an obvious question is... is it better to be chided for being a woman with visible tattoos, or to be objectified because of them? Neither, I'd s'pose. But I've never heard a female friend complain about boys who pay them attention because of their tattoos. (Unless the dude is funny lookin. Or me. Which may be one and the same. I'm pretty funny lookin)

Tonight I'm going to be cooking a silkie chicken. http://static.mypetchicken.com/images/chickenPix/large/Studio_WSilkie_649_L.jpg with feathers. http://polloplayer.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/2009_03_25-blackchicken.jpg without feathers. I expect good things. I also made some epically pungent pickled eggs tonight. Each jar topped with a hard boiled quail's egg. My kitchen is very confusing tonight.

LST Tattoo Forum, Six Months Live
ShawnPorter replied to Lochlan's topic in Forum Suggestions and Feedback
I know I'm relatively new here, but it's been a great few weeks here so far. I want to thank everyone who's taken time out of their lives to make this all possible. Running a website is tough, much less a community based site. But this is one of the most easy going, non-elitist drama free sites I've ever been a part of. And I for one appreciate it. Here's to the years to come! -
Can't wait to see how it all comes together.

Dave: So. What were you thinking about? Me: Dunno. Maybe a trailer trash pin up girl. Dave: I thought you wanted a Japanese demon? Me: That works too. Pick which one you want and draw it up, I'm going to watch a movie. Dave: Ok. Haha.

I'm making mozzarella cheese tomorrow; as fate would have it I also have a few black truffles, so I'm thinking of incorporating them and creme fraiche into it; I've bought some in the past wrapped in leeks that mixed the truffles in with the creme but I'm not sure how I'm going to work it all out.

Old Tattoo Documentaries
ShawnPorter replied to ShawnPorter's topic in Tattoo TV Shows, Documentaries and Media
What's great is I've had a few messages from folks who were all "you know, I have a bunch of VHS tapes in storage somewhere".... I'm encouraging them to convert em to dv, even making lists of stuff they'd need and how to do it- or hell, send them to me and I'll do it. I just don't want this stuff fading away. -

Working and living with visible tattoos
ShawnPorter replied to JoKno's topic in Crazy Tattoo Stories
Oh, I was quite aware of the effect reprimanding him would have. At the time I was really unhappy at work so anyone who they paired me with became the enemy. It was a sure sign that I needed to move on when I thought that ruining someone's day was a small victory. Once I found out he was a nice guy, I felt terrible. Since I've moved on from the megacorp I'm MUCH less of a prick. It was older handpoked stuff, yeah, but he didn't tell me who did it. I asked to take photos but there was a lot of no-no-no-no with sheepish grins. What he showed me was gorgeous. Aged really beautifully. -
I'll have to link your food blog from mine! I accidentally made ricotta a few weeks ago while making mozzarella. I use citric acid powder instead of lemon though- do you feel that the lemon juice flavors it at all? And I should totally take this conversation to food & drink and not restaurants. To attempt to keep myself on topic- There's a great sushi place in NYC near my sister's condo that does a raw calf's liver sashimi. Super thin slices and served with a garlic oil dipping sauce. I'll have to ask her the name of the place.

I used to go to Ancient Art in the early 90s. Devotion was like.... 3rd wave. But yeah, I get what you're saying- Orlando and Tampa have one of the biggest WFT tattoo shop infestations I've ever seen. I'm ABSOLUTELY not saying this to be offensive, so pardon me if it comes off crass, but I remember that Orlando had so many tattoo shops that TWO SHOPS on one street were opened by non-tattooer paraplegics. How f'ing specific is that? That there's one shop owned by a non-tattooer paraplegic is interesting enough, but two on ONE street? Jesus. And Deb- Sorry to hear. Hope it all works out in your favor.

It's sadly not that interesting; raw foie mixed gently into butter until it's an even consistency. I expected more, though I tried some on toast and it was fantastic. That was one of those irresponsible food days where I went and bought heavy cream to make my own butter, mixed in the foie once the butter was ready and ate it on toast while watching cartoons. Talk about a balanced diet.

Working and living with visible tattoos
ShawnPorter replied to JoKno's topic in Crazy Tattoo Stories
I was working with a visiting Kaizen (it's a method of continuous improvement started by Toyota) trainer from Japan, and he kept staring at my arms/hands/throat when we were trying to work. I was starting to get annoyed because the entire point of Kaizen is lean management. No wasted efforts, no straying off task, etc. Finally, he tried to roll up my sleeve without permission and I told his translator that he had crossed a line of politeness and that it wasn't acceptable. He was terribly embarrassed and excused himself. Before he left, he asked to see me again, and showed me his AMAZING tattoos that he keeps hidden. The translator had a WTF moment since he didn't know his boss was tattooed and my crew kept razzing me that I managed to get a guy who gets paid 20K a week to train people to keep on task (which is an oversimplification of the kaizen process) to be distracted while working. For the most part, I think I'm heavily tattooed (to untattooed people) enough that it's "safe" to approach me. That any stigmas or stereotypes of someone with tattoos ceases applying to me in the minds of the people I have to deal with- that I'm a "tattoo guy" not a "guy with tattoos". Does that make any sense? I've found when I'm with people with just a few visible tattoos, I'm the person that gets approached the most often. Could be a coincidence. Personally, I find that it's rarely an issue. The places I'd work that would have too big of an issue with visible tattoos are places I'd likely not be working at. At my previous job my tattoos made senior corporate management more likely to remember me and gave them something to talk about to me (despite me hating talking about tattoos at work) that put me in their heads when it came to special projects et all. -
I trimmed three inches or so off today. It's getting warmer and my beard going down past my collar was making my neck sweaty. No one needs that. It's still a nice proper beard though.

I don't have a decent picture of the tattoo, but here's the watercolor (By Rick Lohm of HALO in Syracuse, who also did the tattoo) that spawned it. Story- Once the big owl trend really started hitting hard, I decided it was time for the noble Turkey to be the next "It" tattoo bird. Eagles, Owls, Swallows.... they've all had their turn. So every time Rick would post a tattoo of an eagle on his facebook, I'd comment that it didn't really look like a turkey and that he should try harder. Habitually harassing him until he finally painted this to shut me up- A portrait of me as the devil Turkey. The milk was because Rick likes milk- we didn't even get the "cry over spilt milk" thing until after he tattooed it on me. The turkey has yet to get it's turn, but it's coming.
