The Swastika symbol in tattoos
ShawnPorter replied to Iwar's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
I don't feel that his apology is sincere, since much like myself I doubt he thinks it's necessary. Thomas is, for want of a better word, a 'public figure' now and I reckon he doesn't want his brand tarnished by other people's ignorance. So it's probably just easier to 'apologize' than to educate. -
Hand and/or neck tattoos but nothing else...
ShawnPorter replied to Lochlan's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
I met a tattooer a few years back, can't remember the guy's name but he was a real nice dude and a pretty decent artist. He was telling me that even as a tattooer he was having a hell of a time finding someone to do his hands without his arms being done first. His argument was that he didn't WANT his arms done. As we get more and more into the "general public" (I loathe using it, but I can't think of a better way to delineate the difference between "tattoo people" and everyone else) using tattoos to express aesthetics that aren't so codified to our subculture... Sorry... got really wordy there. Anyhoo.... He eventually got his hands done. Still doesn't want his arms done. I worry that we're trending into a snobbery thing and that we're the ones that need to change. Like when Hardy started really pushing the planned out Japanese bodysuit versus the more traditional 'patched vulcanized tire' look there was a "these people don't GET it" snobbiness towards single piece Americana tattoos. But we've luckily worked through that. Now we're more evolved and just make fun of chromed up pieces. That or these Warped Tour Bodysuit folks are just douches. Either way. -

I have Baphomet on my left hand. So unless I'm wearing gloves I pretty much always have to rock the 'uncomfortable looks/questions' risk every time I talk to people. A little kid asked me once if it was "The Devil". Instead of getting all wordy, I said "yeah, because the DEVIL IS COOOOL". He smiled, the little scamp. Even kids love the dark lord. -
Oliver told me in Richmond that he's in it for the money. Hi. I'm Shawn and I ruin things.

Ps: When everyone is in town, since I like food as much (ok, my waist line may say more) than tattoos... we should get dinner. There's a great place by my bar that's open till 2am, and they have Pheasant confit....

I really like the new one; but some of the solo stuff isn't my cup of tea either. Oh well. I figure I download SO MANY dang albums without paying for them that the Higgs albums that I actually pay for and dont like balance out when I torrent Lady Gaga for my fiance....

The story keeps cycling on my various social networking sites and blogs. Some people taking really personal shots at Kevin (And his shopmates, but in fairness, I know there' s a personal subtext to one) and everyone pretty much getting holier than thou. Kevin... if you shade that piece, do NOT take pictures. -

Troy is going to be holding it at the Convention Center this year; last year was... difficult. Hopefully there'll be a little more room this year.

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

For anyone who can't afford a copy, for $15 buck I'll wear a red beanie and give you a personal recitation. $20 if you want me to wear pants.

Years ago, Mike Wilson showed me a picture of a tattoo he did on a guy who was a crazy white power/survivalist/conspiracy theorist. The fella was convinced that the great race war was coming, and that when the "white man lost" that his enemies would set off an atomic bomb or some crazy shit like that. To protect himself, the guy asked Mike to tattoo a black triangle coming down his cheek, starting just below his eye. The blast from the explosion would pass over him if he had it. Mike did it after the guy kept asking over and over. Tattooing wasn't damaged. Sure, some a-hole has a stupid, possibly life altering tattoo on his face that may keep him from getting a job more so than avoiding the effects of atomic fallout, but that's pretty much that. If the internet would have been more omnipresent back then, I'm sure it would be all over the place, though I doubt people would have been taking personal shots at Mike. Kevin- I think it's a bad idea. I wouldn't have done it. (then again, I'm not a tattooer; I don't make a living having to decide what to turn down and what to do, so my opinion is allowably biased) Partially because it would have come back to bite me on the ass, partially because while she requested it, consent isn't everything and in the end nothing good could have come out of it. I make bad decisions sometimes too (though I admit I'm kind of a dick) and having those bad decisions thrown in my face would be equally agitating. I'm not here to rub salt in anyone's wounds though. Lesson learned and all that. -
Old Tattoo Documentaries

I host a yearly afterparty to the Philly tattoo convention at my bar; pretty much looks exactly like that. We have a liberal policy on what you're allowed to wear, afterall :D -

It's great- it's called Signatures of the Soul; hosted by Peter 'Easy Rider' Fonda. Ed Hardy, Bob Roberts and Leo Zulueta, Doc Webb.... I'm not sure if it's available on dvd. -

It really wasn't that brutal; For the area I was expecting it to be really terrible, but Chad made it as pain-free as possible; it still sucked just because of where it was, but honestly- Chad is pretty even handed. There is a picture a few posts up.

I did the math- Kubrick was either 17 or 18 when he took that.

This is circus strongman/tattooed man Rasmus Neilsen; aka the Tattooed Wonderman or Tough Titty. He directly influenced my mentor Jack; and by default me. You can see the Pharaoh's Horses on his chest but the rest is harder to make out. The photo was taken in 1948 by a very young Stanley Kubrick. They're selling prints for $250.... I might have to buy one!

It's at 75 now, but it'll go up. They always do. Really worth it though.
