Oh sure, @Fala, you can claim that all you want! In fact, I believe such a product would be welcomed! We're just gonna make you do all those pesky clinical trials involving a bunch of butt-shoving. ;) - - - Updated - - - No, SPF really matters! An easy reference I see is if you burn in 10 minutes, then using SPF 8 will allow you to stay in the sun up to 80 minutes (10 minutes * 8) without burning. And that assumes you keep applying it regularly. Putting more of it on doesn't get you an extension! :D Get at least 30, and make sure it is "broad spectrum" so check your bottle of 30. This means it protects against UVB and UVA. The UVA is the one many sunscreens do NOT protect against (the cancer-causing one). Anything with the zinc/titanium would fit the bill.

Agree - I've seen similar stuff as well. After about SPF 50, don't bother spending the extra marketing $$$. And I'm with ya on the ZnO and TiO2 for broad spectrum. Ok, he has a good argument for the SPF marketing BS, but this guy is full of BS in other ways. He recommends wearing a shirt instead? A typical shirt is SPF 8, and that goes down if the shirt is wet. Pah. And he drops this little bomb: Looks like he's a couple years late to the party. FDA has been talking about UVA protection since 2011: Sunscreen [sOAPBOX] I work for FDA. Yes, there is a lot of dysfunction like the rest of government, but FDA seems to be a punching bag for uninformed blowhards like this guy who don't feel like doing a basic google search. And contrary to public belief, FDA does not manufacturer products or market products - FDA strives to ensure that marketing created by companies is accurate. It's hard to police a lot of overzealous marketing people who make claims that can't be substantiated. To this end, in 2011, FDA came out very strongly with recommendations on how to read sunscreen labels. FDA spells out how to recognize sunscreens that cannot claim to protect against skin cancer. http://www.fda.gov/downloads/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/UCM258718.pdf [/sOAPBOX] Hey @beez - not knocking you - you provided good information. I'm just bent at some of the other BS that guy posted.

I think you made it out to be a lot darker and more severe than the picture actually shows. Get opinions. It would be crazy to blast over this with solid black.

You sent me off on a Quest for Knowledge (LOL!) and I'll be ordering some of this stuff for a couple reasons: 1) Zinc Oxide is the only ingredient that is broad spectrum for UVA and UVB (and UVC). 2) It doesn't contain any of the ingredients that can be irritants or are not recommended for children (Bad stuff = para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and benzephenones like dioxybenzone, oxybenzone, or sulisobenzone). (<--- I'll be returning the Bullfrog for Kids that I just bought because it contains some of these ingredients.) 3) Contains no ingredients that are shown to contribute to coral bleaching!!! (Bad stuff = oxybenzone, butylparaben, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC)) This link has descriptions and the study reference, and statements from National Park Service, National Geographic and Scuba Diving Life: Coral Reef Safe Sunscreen Information - Badger This link includes a nice chart of all FDA approved ingredients and their effectiveness for UBA and UVB (page 4). Great reference for reading labels. http://www.epa.gov/sunwise/doc/sunscreen.pdf Thanks @beez for the recommendation.

.::The Original Firefly ::. Ice tea flavored vodka. Some like it with lemonade; I like it on the rocks with water. Perfect summer drink. There are a few other brands jumping on the bandwagon, but imitators IMO.

My tattooer was saying to use bullfrog, or anything for babies because they have to get the UV number right for babies. I dunno- I had SPF 50 slathered on so thick and a UV rash guard to go running today. Well, I understand, it's all about the portfolio picture. (edited: see my post below for technical details, including that Bullfrog for Kids has problematic ingredients: http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-after-care/5584-sunscreen-sun-vacation-threads-page3.html#post95253) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ran 6 miles on mountain trails this morning and took pics of a revolutionary war cemetery. Freaking tired but these ciders and Fireflies are going down smoothly. And damn the weather is wonderful for evening cocktails. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

He just had some work done. Probably still not right in the head ;-)

This is killing me. What are you writing in binary? Are you a computer geek? DEADBEEF? BIGBOOBS? Oh wait, DEFACED! Perfect for a tattoo!

Heading into session 7 on Friday, and I had another pre-sitting massage yesterday. My guy was booked so I went to a new guy. During our pre-massage chat, I told him I was in the middle of a tattoo, and to avoid a specific area on my back because it had just been tattooed a couple weeks ago. So he's fine with it, says he doesn't know how massage affects healing, and will be gentle. He asks me to start face down. After I'm settled on that nice comfy heated table, he comes in, turns down the sheet gasps and says, "Wow, I thought you said it was just a tattoo. I didn't think it would be this big!" It was funny to hear - younger kid. But then he had to tell me about his tattoo (ambigram down his side, done with his best friend, etc.) and asks me all sorts of questions while I'm trying to relax into the massage. Looks like this is a great reason to stick with one masseuse. And of course, since it's a sea theme, he had to tell me he "found Nemo." Yeah, that one's gonna get old pretty quickly.

Tattooed mummy reveals her 2,500 year old tattoos .

Really neat stuff. Even more in this article that came out a couple weeks later. Fashion and beauty secrets of a 2,500 year old Siberian 'princess' from her permafrost burial chamber Yeah, this is an old thread, but I'm bumping it for the newbies to see (like, eh, me). -

I usually can't sleep solidly but I'm good-and-tired for that long. It depends on how well I hydrated and when we finish. He only works after hours so we don't finish until the very wee hours. I get maybe 5-6 hours and then kinda tired the rest of the next day. But sleep is good - take all you can get! Maybe you were fighting off something? Do all that Vitamin-C stuff. -
What about when you are old and wrinkled?!

I am SOOOO stealing this! Thank you! -
Me too. It's definitely a thought for a large piece - plan ahead and get the temporary tattoo first.
-
Well, that bicep shot actually looks kinda deformed. Is it because he's a wrestler that he looks so scrawny?
-
Don't worry about why other people get tattoos. If you are looking for something that also has a "show piece" aspect, then recognize that you are asking to be judged by people. You are placing part of your self-worth into other people's reactions. If you choose something that is not timeless, then you risk people's opinions/judgements of the piece changing in negative ways over time. Are you ok with this? For example, trending bands and TV shows. What might seem all, "Whoa, cool dude" could easily end up being, "oh, yeah, whatever" years down the line. Can you accept that the show piece may no longer have the impact? Yes, a tattoo will fade. If you want to keep it looking as good as possible for as long as possible, commit to wearing shirts more often and investing in ton of sunscreen.
-
Dumb. Are you getting this tattoo for yourself, or for what you want others to think of you, or for the laughs? Depends on how long you want it to look good. If you don't care, feel free to soak up the rays!
-
When are you planning to reschedule? How long was the wait? I've got it in the back of my mind and would have to fly out, and wondering what my scheduling challenges would be.
-
I grew up swimming in cold lakes and campgrounds. I'm on the whiter side too, and like a little color on my calves so I don't look like a corpse in a dress. I slather on sunscreen too. Can't wait to when I can hang in the summer and have attention on my back rather than my white belly :-D This weekend looks good Sunday and Monday, so there will definitely be some cocktails at the marina. But alas, since my piece is not done, I am under strict orders to use SPF 1000, don't rub it all the way in, and wear a UV rash guard over top. All summer. ::wilters:: It's gonna take a fair number of Coronas to survive this.

@Fala - I know you are so bummed about being sick! I am vicariously bummed, too! I'm thinking about giving it to my tattoer as a present, or to my brother who is a Japanophile and a cat lover. They're probably still available online, right?

With summer here, thoughts turn to tattoo care and summer activities. Here is a collection of threads that came up in my search. I didn't actually read all these threads, so I can't vouch for their usefulness, but here ya go! It would probably be a good idea not to resurrect a bunch of really old threads on the same topic by commenting on them, but these are for reference. http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-after-care/4121-another-swimming-question.html http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-after-care/2723-non-whitening-sun-protection.html http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-after-care/1428-sun-tan-question.html http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-after-care/1203-oops-waht-do-you-do-if-your-tattoo-gets-sunburned.html http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-after-care/1076-swimming-new-tattoo-how-long-do-you-wait.html http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-after-care/834-sunscreen-fresh-piece.html http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-after-care/357-how-soon-too-soon-go-hawaii-post-tattoo.html http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-after-care/5423-diving-island-vacation-while-tattoo-progress.html http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-advice/3931-sunblock-after-new-tattoo.html http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-advice/2678-going-hawaii-right-before-tattoo-concerns.html I also found it easier to find threads by title by looking at the LST sitemap rather than the regular interface.
