Funny or interesting tattoo compliments
velvetlover36 replied to Matthew Thomas's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
I've always have some people who--who after seeing my tattoos--ask if I'm a tattoo artist and if I did the work myself. I kind of laugh it off and say that I'm neither a tattoo artist, nor did I do the work myself. Once we part ways, I think to myself how idiotic can someone be to think that I did all of my tattoos myself...it would be next to impossible to do so. I find it pretty funny when little kids see my tattoos and say to their parents "look mommy, that boy colored on himself." -
I agree...that wolf King Ruck did was terrible, not to mention the shit he did during the convention challenge was worse than the wolf. The main reason I watch this show is to laugh at all the deluded half-wits who think they've already won the competition. I'm really looking forward to that confrontation betwixt Chris and Kyle.

Did anyone watch the season premier of Ink Master last night? I liked how they made everyone do convention-style tattooing to earn their stay...I don't see Polynesian Roland sticking around that long based on what he did during the convention competition--that cat he did was terrible, not to mention his "redemption" tattoo.

Horrendous infection.

That's funny, I was just watching videos on abscess drainage the other day on YouTube...I love shit like this. I can only imagine the stink coming out of that incision...I also liked how the medical professional kept sticking his finger in it. -
Etiquette -- after the design is drawn up
velvetlover36 replied to keepcalm's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
I've had to ask for minor changes here and there, and have no qualms about doing it...remember, it's going to be on your body forever so make sure it's exactly what you want. Now if you're talking about completely changing the design from what was originally agreed upon, then that's a different story. -
Getting this on my leg on Thursday, minus the script...adding color to the helmet, goggles, light bolt, and bursts in the eyes. It's out of the Zeis flash book...design was drawn by Ralph Johnstone.

I work at the corporate office of the company I am employed by. Both of my arms are covered--minus my shoulders--and I've recently started on my legs. For the most part it's a pretty laid-back environment, given that you do what you're getting paid to do and follow the employee handbook...with that said, aside from casual Fridays, I wear long-sleeve button downs and dress pants everyday. I will on occasion role my sleeves up a bit during the end of the day, but for the most part I keep my tattoos covered...not because I have to, I just like to look professional. Some people I work with are stuck in time warp and have a negative view on tattoos...others are pretty liberal and don't give a shit, I just prefer to keep a low profile whenever possible.

I've had two different artists do my tattoos, with one of them--Jeremy Swed--doing the majority...the other artist is Kenny Rice, who works at the same shop as Jeremy. I've come close to having other artists do work on me, but when it came down to it, I just felt more comfortable going with what I knew. I mean the other artists I considered were great/skilled tattooers, but ultimately what lead to me to sticking with Jeremy and Kenny was that the other artists didn't really take the time to understand what I wanted, it was more of a "come in when you want and I'll draw something up and do the tattoo"...plus, with me being a regular, I get somewhat of a discount on the price.

Do we really need apprentices?
velvetlover36 replied to Great Lakes Tattooing's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
I can't recall any shop I've been in where the apprentice was actually learning the art, like actually sitting next to the tattooer while he's working and asking questions. Most of them were responsible for setting up the ink/machines/supplies, then getting the customer to sign the paperwork and ringing them up once the tattoo was done, greeting people as they walked in, asking what they wanted, then conveying that to the artist. Maybe they're learning the craft after hours or whenever the tattooer is off, but most of the time what they're doing is nowhere near what a traditional/true apprenticeship should entail. I mean, what's the point in an apprenticeship when you can go to a tattoo school and become a master tattooer in only two weeks?! -
The end is nigh.

I've never had any extra scrutiny when traveling--locally or abroad--but I have noticed that the majority of cities I've been to in Europe, people would stare really hard at my tattoos, but wouldn't approach me and ask about them like people in the States do. I think the only places in Europe where people actually asked me about my tattoos were Amsterdam, Berlin, and Copenhagen.

Have your tattoos changed your life?
velvetlover36 replied to sbhikes's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
My girlfriend gets really pissed when people come up to me and compliment/ask me about them...I guess that's the only thing that has changed since getting my tattoos. -
Tattoos After Dark
velvetlover36 replied to MRCL's topic in Tattoo TV Shows, Documentaries and Media
Tattoos After Dark is a joke of a show, none of the tattooers are worth a shit--especially that idiot Friday Jones...and that moron of a piercer isn't doing the show any favors either. Regarding Tattoo Nightmares, I don't know if anyone who watched the show noticed, but in every episode the three artists are always wearing the same clothing: Tommy wears the same v-neck, Jasmine wears the same blue top and jeans, and Gus always wears the same unbuttoned plaid shirt. I know they can't film an entire season in one day, so it's very curious why they always have the same clothes on. Also, when they're tattooing and talking to the person about their shitty tattoo, the artist is making the motions like they're tattooing, yet you don't hear the machine and you don't see any progress being made to the cover-up, just the artist running the machine over the area and looking like they're interested in the person's story. If TM hasn't been cancelled yet, it needs to be. -
The editing on that show isn't the greatest...I was watching it the other night and in one scene Ruckus had a stubbly moustache, then in the next scene there was nothing there...or they'll show the start of the cover-up, then you'll see Dirk tattooing, they'll show a shot of the area being worked on, still with the stencil completely visible, and the next scene he says he's done. The majority of the cover-ups that're done on this show are not good at all...I think I've seen maybe one or two that were good. He did one a few weeks ago where the cover-up was of two pandas on this lady's stomach, and the panda's were jacked as shit. What's also funny about that show is at the beginning they're on the strip looking for potential clients, but after that, everything they do is on Fremont St., even though they make it seem like they're strictly on the strip. It's kind of hard for me to watch Best Ink, mainly because of Sabina Kelley and Pete Wentz...those two have to be the most worthless humans beings on TV.

Who do you think deserves some recognition?

They've stopped buying VHSes...they still sell them, but their stock isn't what it used to be. I could easily find a good five-seven movies worth buying every I went there. When I found out they would no longer be buying VHSes, I went there and bled them dry. That was one of the few places in Atlanta I could rely on for having a great VHS selection.

I'm really looking forward to the Lost Love flash book. I already have the Milton H Zeis: Tattooing As You Like It book and I think I'm more excited for Lost Love than I was the Zeis book. Also, if anyone knows what movie is played in the video, please share...I've tried looking it up and came up with nothing.
