  1. But I wonder if the guests actually come up with the critiques themselves. My suspicion is that they're written by other people (e.g. the primary judges).

  3. Not commenting on the tattoo itself - but the photo for me was mainly a photo of a sink and a mirror and only a tiny amount of tattoo...

  5. @SeeSea, maybe you can get the FDA to allow more of the European sunscreens onto the US market please?!:) Fresh sunscreen ingredients stuck in FDA backlog - SFGate FDA review of new sunscreen ingredients languishes, frustrating advocates - The Washington Post
  6. I don't know about parents, but my sister was shocked (and we're both in our 50s!)
  7. An antenna is just an antenna, it picks up radio waves however they're encoded. (i.e. there's not really a difference between a "digital" and an "analog" antenna.) It's then up to the receiver to be able to decode the signal in the appropriate way. Antennas and Digital Television | FCC.gov
  8. Bit unsure whether to post this here or not as it's probably a little "unusual". But, anyway, here's my first/latest tattoo. It's based on the Apollo 8 logo - I'm an astronomer and was inspired by NASA's Apollo program as a kid.
  9. It's a stock photo, not the actual tattoo. The Guardian web page does a lot of that (using stock photos) which IMO is wrong.
  10. FWIW, according to wikipedia he did attend Parsons in New York, which is a pretty well regarded arts college....
  11. When I was considering getting my first tattoo (which I did just over a week ago) I first experimented using custom temporary tattoos with my close-to-final design in the place I planned to put the actual thing. I found this both enabled me to check how the thing would look and check the visibility. I have mine on my upper arm, and I found that it was well covered by normal T-shirt sleeves which is what I wanted. Of course a temporary tattoo won't look exactly the same as a real tattoo and you have to take that into consideration! But you can certainly check the overall look and placement. The place I used was this one: https://www.straytats.com/ You upload a graphics file and specify a size. Cost was reasonable and turn round was pretty quick. There may well be other places which are just as good. When I showed my tattooer the photos I'd taken of the custom temporary tattoo to show where I wanted it, he was quite impressed.
  12. Given the criticisms/cautions against finger tattoos, what do those here more knowledgeable than me (which is most people) think of this one...? Instagram
  13. Was she really so stupid? She'd noticed you had better tattoos than her husband, and she took steps to find out why... Maybe it was more like her husband who was the one lacking in the smarts?
  14. A well-functioning automatic tattoo machine (which I doubt the one described here is) might have the potential to produce much more "even" lines and shading, and perhaps do some things that can't be done by hand. Then wouldn't it just be more one tool that a good tattooer could use? i.e. similar to the way a contemporary musician can choose between computer sequenced and produced sounds to music made on acoustic instruments. And a good artist can pick and choose anything on this "spectrum" of tools that can help them achieve what they're aiming for...
  15. Well, it would have to be a "sea-panther" of course...
  16. Maybe that's a teratoma(?), which are very weird things... Teratoma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  17. My dermatologist told me his only concern about tattoos was that they shouldn't be over a mole. (He didn't explain why and I didn't ask since I didn't have a mole where I wanted the tattoo.)
  18. I'm suspicious this may be an April Fool "story"...
  19. But I think that quote may not be exact (depending on its exact origins). e.g. a poem at The Poetry has this phrasing (as a small extract):
  20. Maybe it's supposed to say "News"? Could be a vegan hot dog? (Veggie sausages can be pretty good.)
  21. Possibly of interest from Scientific American: In the Ink: Do All Tattoo Pigments Use Mercury and Other Toxic Heavy Metals? - Scientific American "While red causes the most problems, most other colors of standard tattoo ink are also derived from heavy metals (including lead, antimony, beryllium, chromium, cobalt nickel and arsenic) and can cause skin reactions in some people. Helen Suh MacIntosh, a professor in environmental health at Harvard University and a columnist for the website, Treehugger, reports that as a result of a 2007 lawsuit brought by the American Environmental Safety Institute (AESI), two of the leading tattoo ink manufacturers must now place warning labels on their product containers, catalogs and websites explaining that “inks contain many heavy metals, including lead, arsenic and others”" - - - Updated - - - But perhaps the end of the article is the most use for the nervous amongst us (like me): Also, for what it's worth, I was seeing my dermatologist for an unrelated matter and asked him about my getting a tattoo. He had no concerns, except to say that he preferred black and blue inks as those are the easiest to remove!
  22. Isn't this criticism of other people's tattoos on a tattoo forum - because they aren't what some consider to be "proper" tattoos - something of a "no true Scotsman" type argument? No true Scotsman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
