  1. Wow. Thanks for the reference. I just bought this book after seeing you post and doing a quick search on the internet. Great book and illustrations. All kinds of ideas in my head now. Any other books or references like this ?
  2. Researching local NYC artists and found this Lady head by Jessica Mascitti. I like the details, the clear red band over the eyes and think the girl looks great.
  3. I thought the jellyfish tattoo I posted looked a little feminine. Could be the flowing curving design. Just my opinion.
  4. Octopus, shark and whales are now at the front of my list. What the heck is a cthulhu ? Pick your battles in a marriage. I don't want a jellyfish tattoo THAT bad. This is the jellyfish tattoo I showed my wife. Thought it looked a little girly to go on a guy.
  5. Some article on the internet about tattoo styles. My wife hates the idea anyway. I showed her a black & grey jellyfish tattoo. She said it looks like a monster.
  6. I am new to tattoos. I just read jellyfish tattoos are for women ?
  7. If you make an appointment with a particular artist I imagine you have some kind of general idea at least on the style and the type of work the artist tends to do ?
  8. Look forward to seeing it. Are you going color ? What artist did you choose ?
  9. True and funny you mention snakes and eels. I am an avid scuba diver. I feel no connection to snakes, but eels are one my favorite animals to see on a dive. I can definitely see an eel tattoo in my future. Octopus and jellyfish interest me too. The free flowing shape gives flexibility on placement. An octopus has an ability to mimic the look, color and patterns of things it is touching. That opens all kinds of possibilities on tattoo design.
  10. I have plenty of bare skin so maybe I'll get a tattoo from both. Yoni responded to my email pretty fast. Have a consult mtg with him next Monday. Still haven't heard from Anderson. I was surprised to find out Anderson has only been tattooing since 2007. To my amateur eyes, his work looks amazing. Can't imagine how good his future stuff will be as he gains more tattoo experience. I have some ideas in my head, but not sure if they will convert to a good tattoo.
  11. Thanks. I do like this forum. In my limited time here I can see the membership is very helpful and respectful.
  12. I am new here and new to tattoos. Curious, are there other good tattoo forums that are popular for the other styles ?
  13. I would hope the tattoo artist who does this kind of work would be familiar with the traditions and what is appropriate ? I guess there are different levels of knowledge and ability just like any other profession ? I guess this branches off the subject of people who tattoo vs. artists that create. Some who can copy vs. others that are truly gifted knowledgeable artists that create and design in addition to being good tattooers ?
  14. I'm looking for a black & grey ocean animal theme on my shoulder/upper arm. An octopus, eel, jellyfish or squid but with some unique patterns, symbols and additional elements. Maybe a dagger, skull, necklace, etc.. Something original and different. I went to NY Adorned and Saved Tattoo. Both shops said to contact my artist of choice direct via email. Waiting for an email response from Anderson Luna and Yoni Zilber.
  15. Someone else posted work by Anderson Luna. Here are a few more. My wife is not the jealous type, but I don't think she would like it if I got a tattoo of a woman. Never the less, Anderson's work is very impressive.
  16. How well do these super detailed tattoos age ? What about the dotwork ? Do the dots eventually expand and look more like traditional shading ?

Funny you mention Anderson Luna. When I first looked at the Saved website, Anderson's work caught my eye the most. Amazing tattoos with a lot of detail. The stuff on his Instagram page is a little too girly for me, but there are some exceptions like his skull and shark. From what I've seen online of Anderson, John and Zac, I think I'd be happy with any of them. Might be a matter of who is available.

My plan for my next tattoo is black and grey, but good to know color can be an option.

Makes sense. This way I can also check out his, the other artists work and their schedules. I assume they will have portfolios available for viewing. It's an easy subway ride to there.

Thanks. I'll head down there to talk with him after the new year. Curious, do you know if he has a long wait list ?
  21. Forgive my ignorance. I just go my 1st tattoo a month ago and I am trying to learn the correct terminology and style differences so I can be respectful of the art. What's the difference between tribal, blackwork and dotwork tattoos ? If a tattoo has geometric symbols or designs like a doily or mandala does that automatically fall into a specific style ? What if the tattoo is solid no dots or has some color or has a mixture ?

Thanks for the recommendations. I took a quick look at John Sultana's Instagram page. I really like his designs, but I'm not sure about the dotwork style. Looks like it's not just subtle dot shading but the whole tattoo is dots.

I'm a dark skinned Asian. I think dark all black will look best, so Japanese and traditional are probably out. I like geometric shapes and patterns. Was thinking a shark or octopus, but not something off a flash sheet. I want a custom unique design. Luckily cost is not a big factor. I've read so many different reviews and articles about the best tattoo shops in NYC my head is spinning.
  24. I am a dark skinned Asian, so this thread interests me. I got my 1st tattoo a month ago. All black. Considering color for my 2nd tattoo. I was also reading about certain types of tattoo styles and artists whose shading does not work well with darker skin.
  25. The internet has made me lazy. I can sit on my couch drink beer and easily browse work from 100's of different local NYC artists. But when it comes time to choose, the choice is overwhelming. Time to get off my butt and visit the local shops.
