  1. Wow. You're entitled to some extended kvetching, I think, while that heals.
  2. I'm thinking that a bluebird holding a banner with a name sounds like a pretty nice tattoo - if you want a bluebird on you. I agree that a lot of the bluebird tattoo pictures that pop up in Google aren't appealing, but you can do way better than those. Edit: I just looked back and @Mick Weder mentioned getting a tattoo like this recently!
  3. Here's something I've noticed from reading a variety of articles similar to this one recently, that assume it's edgy to trash tattoos now that they're everywhere. It's OK to display your uninformed attitudes with pride, as long as the subject is tattooing. This is weird to me, the idea that you can decide not to educate yourself about something before spouting forth on it - because you've already determined that it's beneath you - and that this somehow enhances your argument by making you look like more of a badass contrarian. I guess it's the way that a lot of clickbait is written but it sure is disheartening. I find Simon Doonan intermittently amusing, but this article is not, and he mentions aging as if he's being forced to pick up a dead mouse. I would much rather read an article on the pros and cons of tattoos' popularity by someone who's been getting them or making them forever. At least we can agree on Joan Rivers.

That's an excellent idea. I'm taking a bit of a social media break at the moment because the snark started to feel overwhelming. Almost nobody talks like that if they're face-to-face. Here's to more positivity on here and elsewhere.
  5. Thanks, guys! And a particular thanks to the folks who encouraged me to grab this appointment! I got lucky with the win because everything this month is great. Laughing at "little" though - I'm 5'2" so there's not a lot of tattooing space!
  6. I've never seen a tattoo shop rated below 4 stars on Yelp, meaning that everyone must be getting really great tattoos. The thing that bothers me most about Yelp is that so many of the "bad experiences" could have been made better if the reviewer took 2 minutes to be a human being and talk with somebody at the shop/restaurant/whatever rather than go home - or whip out their phone - and write about it. Or to just chalk it up to having to interact with people you don't know & shug it off if it's small enough, which it usually is. ("The cashier looked like she was JUDGING ME!!") It enables a lot of the most irritating kinds of modern-day behavior. The flip side is that it can name & shame businesses that racially profile, etc.
  7. Oh it's a pleasant enough journey, and if you and the Montreal contingent on here can make it to NYC semi-regularly, then someone who lives in MA doesn't have an excuse (other than the city's ability to make money disappear). Guess I'll just have to get tattooed twice while I'm there to make the best use of a trip. It's a hard life.
  8. Well, nothing has been finalized, but I asked and he said he's trying to come to NYC this fall. Here's hoping. I don't think he's an active member here anymore? (I don't know about you, but somehow going to New York from Boston always feels like an effort, even though it's really not that far. I'm trying to get over that because it's a bit silly.)
  9. Tonight I am agreeing with @El Dolmago on everything. Scrambles or omelets (including tofu scrambles if you don't do eggs) with home fries and veggies and meat hit the spot before a tattoo - no sugar spike/crash and there's something comforting about a big breakfast any time of day. If you're ever getting tattooed at Fat Ram's in Jamaica Plain you can hit The Haven beforehand for a full Scottish breakfast. It's pretty fancy but I also love a big gross fry-up.
  10. I'm sorry to drag this off-topic for a minute, but I had a question for @Wilhell and I think @ironchef mentioned this too. Like both of you, I have some baby blue in one of my tattoos that hasn't quite settled down. It's a little patchy and the skin still feels rough even though I got this tattoo in March. Did a second round of the same blue sort yours out?
  11. Yes, those are high on my list. Apparently he will be coming closer to my part of the country this fall. It's tempting to get a pair of them!
  12. Good to hear you're doing better @HaydenRose. Congratulations on the job!
  13. Ha! I had no idea who this was. I just thought it was a good way to describe the experience of looking at @Graeme's backpiece. I can has Google. And derpage.
  14. @Graeme, that is so gorgeous. You don't see texture conveyed that well every day.
  15. As my grandma would say, there's one born every minute.
  16. It finally happened: Tattoo Guard Sunscreen Spray Spotted in the grocery store this evening. I didn't compare prices to see if they were charging us more for the privilege of buying magical "tattoo" sunscreen.
  17. Re tattoos wearing the person. I know this isn't exactly what you were referring to, but I'll admit that getting a large-ish eagle on me was a bit of a leap of faith. It's an image with a long history. For something that also sometimes feels pretty goofy, tattoos have been way more powerful than I'd ever imagined going in to this. I hope that this trip, if I can even call it that yet, continues to challenge me and shake me up!
  18. I'm so glad you said this, because it's often what comes to my mind when I see a bunch of tiny outline-only tattoos on a person and then I sort of feel like a jerk for thinking it. It shouldn't matter what other people choose to get tattooed, it's just a bummer that a lot of it isn't more interesting to look at.
  19. Maybe look into getting a rash guard rated SPF 50. I find mine stays damp for a long time and does help keep me cooler once it's wet, even though it's a really dense knit.
  20. Pain's mercifully/stupidly easy to forget but not at all easy to get used to in the moment... I can only imagine people who say you "get used to" the pain have never experienced arthritis, sciatica, etc etc etc?!
  21. I got at least that much from my thigh tattoo and it healed perfectly, though I applied the first sheet the night after getting tattooed. No scabs at all. (I blasted it under a really hot shower after taking that first sheet off and the second one was a lot less weepy.) You might want to change it before you spend a lot of time standing up or walking - mine sprung a pretty gnarly leak when it was that full.
  22. Re: the discussion of inner biceps going on in the backpiece thread, I just remembered that part of mine was whipshaded to the beat of "Don't Stop Believin'" ("I'm playing her arm!") This will probably be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. - - - Updated - - - Sorry for my original cranky-sounding post. A couple times now I've been expecting a rough time from a tattooer based on people's experiences on here or elsewhere, and then found the pain to be pretty unremarkable. Not that it tickled, just that it felt like getting a tattoo. It's a novice mistake, but I've finally learned not to stress too much about the level of pain I'm in for based on other people's experiences with a tattooer - for better or for worse, it seems to be pretty unpredictable.
