I get where you are coming from John. while some people can pull it off- I myself wouldn't feel comfortable getting these tattoos either. i think that's why i tend to over think stuff and research symbology so much because i don't want to end up with something that holds great meaning to a culture without realising it, or end up with something that doesn't make sense ( ie talking about where traditional Japanese motifs belong and what elements go together etc ) but then again- id much rather see a white man with well executed tribal work over generic tribal any day :)

I also love tattoo symbology. it was for this reason I went for 7 butterflies first, stars with my kids initials and changed my idea of getting a masked owl to instead wanting an eared owl- preferably the European eagle owl. I love reading into different cultures and discovering powers behind animals or symbols or flowers etc. no doubt I will continue downthis path with all future tattoos!

I was considering contacting and finding out stuff like hourly rates, and waiting lists so I would at least have a rough idea on a when and how much id need. I am in rural NSW smack bang between Melbourne and Sydney pretty much, so either city is going to mean travel and accommodation expenses etc but I am in no way complaining. the husband just doesn't get it. :/ I saw this pic on instagram!! omg! I fucking love it and can not wait to see this completed! how did your mate go? I wouldn't mind getting a chest piece done - you know, just above the boobage but below collar bone area... NFI at this stage what id get there. just something ive been thinking of lately is all. yes I totally agree that its best to get something I know I will love and not settle. not to take away from our local artists because they do amazing work too- but I really would love to get Norbert to do the larger pieces instead! I am just a little curious to see what Drew or Mauz would come up with though.

haha!!! my husband told his hoity toity cousin once that his was a gang tattoo he got in juvy :) she felt really bad for him and he lead her on this bullshit trail for ages before telling her the truth. he just liked it. so funny :)

I told the husband I want Norbert to do my thighs and he just doesn't get why I would want to spend that sort of money plus the logisitics of babysitters and travel etc . :( cue tantrum from me.... so I doubt I will be lucky enough to get any large work done by these amazing artists unless I book in with them at a convention.... (no idea how that's any different/better to just going to their studio but anyway!!that's a whole other battle not worth divorcing over.... or is it...??)

well I said I want to get work from many but am having a hard time convincing the husband its a good idea :mad::( so I may just end up with work only from our local. I am happy with their work but was really keen to get my thighs done by wt Norbert. doesn't look like that will be happening now

ok so I have finally finished researching everyone's amazing suggestions ! what can I say ? wow!! thank you all so much! @Dumpleton : wt Norbert! I checked that link and fell in love with what he does! one pic says he is in Sydney which is only about4.5 hrs from me, so not too bad travel wise! I would love for him to do my thighs or just one seeing I also checked Rose Hardy and was very impressed! she is brilliant! @Gregor : like I had said earlier, I saw Crispy lennox in a magazine I have here and got all excited. I think I need to add him to my list ! no idea for what, but I really like his work. I checked out Ali, she is in Brisbane. thanks for suggesting her too!She is a wonderful artist! would love to get something by her at some point! god you people are going to send me broke ;) @Amok : I ended up finding the article :) I also looked him up on the web and remember why he stuck in my head. brilliant! @Graeme : not sure I would get Trevors work but I really did enjoy looking through it! thank you for the suggestion! I do enjoy looking at Japanese tattoos, and reading about the tradition and how certain elements go together and others just don't. so again! thank you all for suggesting these amazing artists! now I must think a bit harder and save a bit more. definitely don't want to just rush in to my local artist for my thighs now, happy to wait a bit more and hopefully get something by some of the above artists :)

nothing super exciting really, just playing around with some little sewing projects using my 1951 singer. the motor is stuffed so I hand crank her, but I love it. and the new bbq arrived so we cooked some chooks in the rotisserie on the weekend (fucking awesome!) and roasted a leg of lamb in her too. (brilliant!) yeah- I live on the edge these days! ;)
