  4. This is on Daredevil Tattoo blog about the NY Ink Show..I couldn't have said it better. That's right I said it. People keep asking what we think of the new show and I'd say that about sums it up. I only saw the first episode. We've been expecting the worst and it's the worst. Chris Torres is the only artist in fact from New York and he was cast as TLC's tattooed answer to Jersey Shore. Their space is reminiscent of the set of Friends. Ami's shop, or I should say TLC's new tattoo parlour on Wooster Street is the unrealistic equivalent of Monica's huge apartment that only a character on TV could afford. All the "I hope I can pay the bills" is a joke. Real life tattoo shops do not have ads on the sides of buses. They're casting the same sorry customers. Dead babies, cancer, tragic endings are needed for inspirational subject matter. (nothing against memorial tattoos except TLC thinks that's the only compelling reason to get tattooed) I'm surprised at how many people actually think there's any reality involved. The scenarios are scripted it's become an hour of bad acting and cheesy scripts. As interesting as a tattoo shop can be and as much fun as it is to get glimpses into our customers lives and their motivations for getting tattooed the reality is that these shows are orchesrated by people who have no actual interest in our industry. There is no understanding or appreciation for the truly fascinating stories and backgrounds of the people who come through our doors (not just the sob stories). It's a caricature written by squares who think they know what a tattoo shop is about. It takes a lot of talent to really portray people's reality in a way that is respectful and truly compelling. I'm a huge fan of documentaries. I love learning about other people's realities. But it takes thought and vision to capture that spark that can be so interesting. Something that doesn't easily fit into the drive by format of a TV series I guess. It's too bad that there is no respect for our industry involved in the creation of these shows. Tattooing is such a rich subject matter it's dissapointing to see it dumbed down for the masses but I guess we shouldn't expect anything else. By the way shame on TLC for knocking off our friend Mark Mahoney's shop name SHAMROCK SOCIAL CLUB. Devil City Press
  5. Check out the real NY Ink video starring Tony Polito,Pete Gaquinto,Ronny Dellaquilo,..They should make the real NY Ink with these old timer's. TattooSnob.com
  6. I remember Marguerite...she was a good tattooer.I heard she moved to upstate NY.Cindy B.is the girl who probably tattooed you.She has a shop near Cleveland. Tattoo Faction
  7. I know of one of the artists who they have on their site, but he hasn't worked there in over a year.Maybe he can help you with some questions. ANDRE MALCOLM / FTW TATTOO
  8. Joe@ JMDs Body Art - Tattooing, Waterford Style RemisTattoo.com Attila & Woyt @ Wildcat Ink, Tattoo & Piercing Maybe someone at these shops knows of a good laser place too.
  9. It seems to me the tattooers who don't have any tattoos,or have just a few got into the business to make a living, and not for the love of tattoos. They probably didn't have any interest in getting tattooed before, but came to realize they could make a decent living doing them on other's.
  10. I agree..I walked into this shop in San Diego and there was a girl tattooing, and a guy sitting at a desk in the back.I asked to see the portfolio's,and he said they had their work on the computer.I sat down at the computer, and he pulled up their website, and said this is my work.I thought this dude was just the counter guy, because he had his shirt rolled up,and i didn't see any tattoos on his arms,or chest area.It was a weird situation..I wanted to say where's your tattoos, but just looked through their work real quick and left.I don't think an artist has to be heavily tattooed to gain respect from his peer's,but at least have some visible tattoos on your arm's.
  11. Some magazine did an interview with him,and he gave some kind of excuse why he doesn't have any tattoos.I did meet him at the NYC Convention last year, and didn't see any visible tattoos on him.
  12. I think Waylon & Josh do the best work in that shop. You can also check out David,& Fernando@ THink ink TAttoos (Think Ink Tattoos) on Myspace
  13. I watched the first show last week, and was disappointed.I guess i thought this show was somehow going to be different than the other's.It seems like there's going to be A lot of drama, and bad acting. It's a shame TLC doesn't realize the majority of people watching these show's wan't less drama, and more good tattoos being showcased.I think your percentage of 8 out of 10 tattooers who would wan't to be on these show's is off.If it was more focused on documenting good tattooing than making it into a soap opera, then i would agree with you. Then again,i don't know how much these artists are getting paid...Maybe that would up the percentage of artists willing to participate. To the question are tattoos to mainstream.I was in SD last week on Garnett Ave,and there was like 7 tattoo shops in like a 1 mile radius.I also took a ride to Julian,CA which is a an hour east of SD in the mountains, and is like a block long, and there was a tattoo shop there.

  15. For some reason,i thought i was going to see less drama, and more tattoos. What was i thinking.I don't believe anything i see on these shows.Everybody has a role to play, and some are better actor's than other's.I guess they wanted a stereotypical New Yorker, and Chris fit the bill.I think this show might have even more stupid drama than LA Ink.From the previews on the first show, there seems to be some fighting going on between Ami,Chris, and Tim.I saw that girl Megan at a convention like 5 years ago,and she was doing real colorful girlie style tattoos.I did just meet this dude who had an old dodge car tattoo from her,and it looked real nice.
  16. Yeah, but he works in Philly.I would just visit shop's in LA and check out portfolios. The Original True Tattoo | Facebook Tattoo Removal at Dr. TATTOFF - Over 100,000 Procedures Performed Skin Laser Center - Los Angeles, CA Tattoo Removal Specialist Some laser places to check out. :: BRYAN BURK TATTOOS :: broken art tattoo Illya & Josh@ STUDIO CITY TATTOO - tattoos and piercing in the Los Angeles area
  17. I know of some tattooers that are good with cover-up's but they never take pictures of before and after and put them in their portfolio. But i would beware of people saying their experts at cover-ups.I look for an artists that does solid work, and who's work has depth to it.I would also recommend doing laser treatment, especially since black responds well to the laser.check out Brian & Jeremiah@ Kari Barba's Outer Limits Tattoo and Piercing in Long Beach. 18. All of the better shop's are on the lower east side. http://thickerthanwatertattoo.com/ is a street shop on LES. Daredevil Tattoo has plenty of good traditional tattooers. And it's down the street from Kat's deli where you can get a good pastrami sandwich. Kings Avenue has some excellent tattooers. And if you wan't a good banh Mi,this place Banh Mi - Vietnamese Sandwich is close to Kings Ave,and is real good. Red Rocket Tattoo New York City You probably can do a walk-in at this shop. Invisible NYC - Art Gallery and Tattoo Studio | Tattoo Artists has some excellent tattooers.Smith street as mentioned is a real nice traditional shop.If you go to brooklyn, check out Brooklyn Flea on Saturday in Fort Greene has some real good food. HopStop.com - Transit Directions and Maps for New York City (NYC) is a pretty good site to help navigate around the city.
  19. Yeah, true story..Never even thought of getting a tattoo until i wen't to rehab at 23yrs.old.My roomy said he was in the special force's,and he had all these military tattoos on his arm.Once i got that first tattoo,it was like switching one addiction for another one.
  20. Wen't to rehab for PCP addiction, and my roommate had all these tattoos on his arm.Got out of rehab and got a heart with mom in it,and was instantly bitten by the tattoo bug.
  21. Thanks everybody..Hey Lochlan the fish taco's at Juanita's look awesome..I did see that episode of crazee burger on DDD..I think i may be eating an ostrich burger. Also saw phillipe's roast beef on one of those show's too.Hey Barbie Doll, that list is awesome..I'm going to put that on my iphone. Now i just have to figure out what to do in LA.
  22. I'm staying near Balboa Park in a part of town called Banker's Hill for three nights, then i was thinking about driving up to LA on the weekend to check out Santa Monica Pier and some farmers market's,the Sunset Strip,Melrose Ave,and of course plenty of tattoo shop's.I know there's alot of food trucks in LA,do you know which ones are a must eat.I do have a rental car the whole week,so driving somewhere isn't a problem.I don't have a place in LA yet, does anyone know of some reasonable places to stay outside of the city.
  23. I'm going to SD,and LA next week, and was looking for some good local places to eat. I really like mexican food, especially Huaraches, and Fish Tacos.Seafood,Burgers,Chinese. Good coffee houses, and Bakeries..I also like to visit outdoor markets.I did buy a frommer's book to SD,but i wan't to get the local's opinions on where to eat,and what places to visit.
  24. You should call some tattoo shops and ask if they know of a good laser place to go to.And Dave does real nice work in Norman. Tattoos and Art by David Bruehl
