In 1973, I was 17, living at home, and very rebelous. My dad, was like Archie Bunker. One night A buddy of mine said "lets go get a tatto". And so we did. We drove to Long Beach, the 'Pike'. Saw a shop called Leroys. An old guy was standing outide the door and I asked him if he was Leroy. He didnt say a word, just rolled his lower lip down so I could see where he had tattoed his name on the inside. Chilling. So I got a Harley tattoo. Back then they would tape a gauze patch over the work for a day. When I rolled into the house, Dad flipped, "Jeeeezus Christ, Is that where you been shooting drugs?" It was so funny I started laughing, which didnt make the situation any lighter.

Personaly, where I live in the high desert, the air is very dry. Add that to dry skin and you get a less than desirable 'canvas' to apply artwork to. "Bag Balm". I swear by this stuff. What I do is use it a few days prior to the tat work. Farmers use this stuff on cow udders. It conditions and removes dry skin. My skin is 57 yrs old, and when its dry, good luck gettin ink past the surface. I use "Bag Balm" after ink as well. It works for me, and several other people around me as well.

I bet the ink has already faded, cause the suns not supposed to shine there, but it does.

Prison tattoos! Yes indeed. I have many. I have built the machines, made the ink, and sat in the cell for many, many, hours and days, doin tat work. I have seen some tattoos that look like, well, whoever did that work probably got a good asswhoopin'. And on the other hand, I have seen some prison tattoos that are mind boggling. Single needle, which is a guitar string bent into a pencil eraser off-center. the eraser is pushed onto the driveshaft of a cassette walkman moter. This is all assembled on a toothbrush that has been cut down heated up and bent 90 degrees at the top to support the motor that is fastened with whatever kind of tape is available. We would remove the 'ball', from the bic ball point pen, and there you have it. If you build the machine correctly, they will work like a champ. The best 'ink' was lamp black. Soot from a candle. All this and a lot of TIME, and in the right hand, will produce some very impressive work.

I use a product called "Bag Balm." Might sound a bit strange, but farmers have been using it on their cows udders for years. And havent we all seen our share of heffers with ink on a titty?
