  1. Relevant to the discussion! Read the commentary! TED-Ed Does Tattoo History…Sigh | tattoohistorian.com As an academic, professional, and historian, she's stoked that it's not as bad as most tattoo histories - gangs, criminals and the like - but points out a number of glaring errors and her commentary is on the nose regarding things like this becoming primary sources for teachers, news reporters etc. - - - Updated - - - http://tattoohistorian.com/2014/04/21/the-melodramatic-nostalgia-of-tattoo-reporting/#more-285 last link post and i'm gonna get back to doing things pertaining to real life now. But so good, so relevant, I am in love with this woman.
  2. I think I remember @El Dolmago discussing how she snuck some tattoo history into one of her lectures? Tattooed people giving a little bit of history in context is kinda cool IMHO! Margot Mifflin, who wrote "Bodies of Subversion" and "The Blue Tattoo: The Life of Olive Oatman" is an academic who has written some interesting and informed material about tattoo and the history of tattoo, and I believe she travels around giving lectures about tattoo history. - - - Updated - - - @Vaas there's an antique bookstore near me that has some older books on Maori tattooing and the like - I don't know where you live, but try a library and check out 'tattoo' in the anthropology sections, you might have some luck! - - - Updated - - - Sorry, can't seem to stop with this. I've enjoyed many posts from this site: http://tattoohistorian.com/ I agree with @Graeme and @bongsau that fundamentally the best way to learn about tattoos is to get tattooed and talk with tattooed people - and that it's important that that is how the history/culture etc is passed on, but I also think there are a number of things academics can contribute to the history of tattoo! Learning, researching, compiling, educating. We have some tattooed academics here on the board who are ensconced in the culture, and who have learned it (are still and always learning) the "right" way - I would love to take classes from them, if they were to offer some sort of tattoo curriculum. But "tattoo 101" or other pop/made for the masses courses - yeah, that kinda sours my stomach. The source DOES matter.
  3. Restaurant refuses service to man because of facial tattoos The restaurant is now facing backlash after they refused service to a man for having facial tattoos. Check out this story on KHOU.com: Restaurant refuses service to man because of facial tattoos
  4. LOL! @Pugilist I can't bring myself to stop saying it either. BUTT SNAKE! I find myself humming the batman theme song and replacing it with BUTT SNAKE pretty regularly now too. ;p But the looks on some people's faces....what on EARTH...is a butt snake? ahahahaha
  5. @Mark Bee you can't seem to go wrong at The Pearl! Love seeing your already impressive collection grow. - - - Updated - - - I can't believe I haven't posted these here! I got my butt snake colored in at the beg of feb. Basically I got home from my tattoo trip, and my dog had a big sudden health issue that had to be dealt with STAT! So I didn't even think about it. Pics attached. I'm booked for more at the beg of Apr too!

  9. Those following on instagram already know about Chuck and her recent diagnosis (osteosarcoma :/) and amputation! But for all youse other guys: I have posted pics of my sweet, adorable, wonderful, loving, [cascade of adjectives here] in the forum before, and here is her debut as a tripawd!
  10. @bongsau YOW! that's gonna hurt. An ass-crack milestone though! Guess who's scheduled with Shad @ Diamond Club at the beg of April?! Super stoked to start my back! Well, I'm not starting it. I'm starting the as yet untouched side! I think there will be more butt outlining, too :/ and also possibly some outline on my leg?! In any event, looking forward to showing you all my butt again. <3 ;)
  11. I'm deleting this bc I'm pretty sure I'm feeding a troll. Don't be jerks people.
  12. @KBeee Once upon a time, many moons ago, I decided I wanted a back piece in the Japanese style. I found an artist who I thought I wanted to work with here in Seattle - he drew some beautiful stuff for me, but (in my opinion) dicked me around quite a bit, and I eventually felt so uncomfortable with this guy that I forfeited my considerable deposit and decided to start from scratch. One thing he said that stuck with me was that Japanese tattoos could be layered on piece by piece, and that I could start with just my arm and not a full body outline. I didn't understand how things were put together then - not that I claim to understand it now, but I have a better idea of what I'm looking at. I knew I wanted an orange peony on one of my flanks no matter what though. (why that was so clear i will never know lol) I was regularly visiting a friend in Oakland at the time, so I figured I'd just make my trips that much more fun by getting tattooed! And then I started learning about San Francisco tattoo culture and whoa. WHOA. All the reading and researching I'd done over the years sorta clicked and I recognized names and work and styles and it was awesome. Through all that, Diamond Club Tattoo kept showing up. Purely because the name kept blinking in my memory lights and showing up in my reading material, I decided to look at Diamond Club a little more closely. I liked what I was reading, and then I somehow found an article - I mean, I was digging DEEP through the internet, all sorts of sideways searches and whatnot, so I really am not sure how I got there - but I found an article in galley pages on the author's personal tumblr page about Diamond Club, and the content of the article basically sealed the deal. (It was for the Nov 2012 Skin and Ink mag I believe). (This was Sept! The mag wasn't even out yet!) In the article, Bill and Junii discuss their passion for the craft, how they are just beginning to build their legacy, how they like to stick to positive images and motifs, and how their shop is like a family. I really like this vibe, so this stuck out in particular to me. They discuss their history and how they met, and I was struck by this woman who had a full fucking bodysuit in Japan in the 80s!!! Who was brave enough to move to a new country! Who had so much passion for tattooing that she kept trying even after she was repeatedly told that women do not tattoo! I wanted to be tattooed by this badass. And THEN - in the years I had spent researching back pieces and saving images to an inspiration file, one in particular kept coming up. And in this article, there was the same picture! IT WAS JUNII!! When I found out that the image I had so long admired actually belonged on a living BADASS who could, in fact, also tattoo me, I sort of lost it. I called the next day and made an appointment to get a peony on my left flank. I hadn't been tattooed in too long, and I just wanted to get started, and this crazy thing had just happened (crazy for me anyway - it was like years of pieces of a puzzle finally falling into a sudden, jarring, crystal clear place) and so that's how I found Diamond Club. (IT JUST FELT RIGHT ;P.) I kept going back, and we kept adding pieces, and that's pretty much it! I found LST right after that, actually. So it sort of worked out in ALL ways for me :)))). Like you said, the more time spent seeing everyone's work and how lovely they are eventually sucks you in and ruins you for most anyone else! (MOST anyone, but certainly not everyone!). DC was just a super good fit for me. Right place, right time!
  13. @KBeee that was an awesome post. Thanks for sharing! Also drooling over your "line-up", so to speak. I definitely want to be tattooed by Paul and Theo! How did you end up @ spider murphy's? I'm curious about The rest of your tale, as well!
  14. Crystal Morey Talks Shop with Bunshin Horitoshi More info for y'all :)
  15. @abees drool! You've got quite the collection there.
  16. @Dennis <drool emoticon> your book collection makes me jealous!
  17. Just came in the mail! :) By Ozuma Kaname: Tattoo Fantasy Women in Tattoo @Dennis Kaname's Women in Tattoo is INCREDIBLE and far outstrips what I was expecting when I ordered it. I saw in the thread that you also recently received it. Big smiles over here! I also have Shienrenjo and Tattooed Beauties. I am pleased with my Kaname collection so far :). The other pic is of my tattoo book shelf, which also has some other odds and ends on it, but I'm pretty stoked for my burgeoning tattoo book collection :).
  18. @bongsau yes, Horitsukikage! That is the plan for right now, at least! Matt/Junii/Shad collab for now. I'm excited! I haven't heard much about him other than I am a fan of his tattoos. I have yet to meet him, actually. Everything is being arranged (however loosely) through Junii. He was in SF in October but I was not able to get down there to get started on the space on my upper back. Hopefully I'll hear more when I'm in SF!
  19. Another session with Junii and Matt at Diamond Club at the end of the month :). More leg and butt work. Hopefully shad will be back soon and we can start on my upper back! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. @Iwar that was great! nice camera work, too. can't wait to see what else you put together, thanks for posting!
  21. @mmikaoj this one looks so good! I have wanted to go the past couple years but have never been able to justify the expense. My little sis lives in Paris so I can definitely justify the trip, hah! But for whatever reason she is usually not in Paris when the convention happens. I will jealously await all posts and updates if you go tho! Would be cool to see an LST Europe get together. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. @SeeSea I saw the pics!! it looks fantastic; well worth every stinkin' hour of pain! 8.5 hrs...I turn pale just thinking about it, wow. Great job and good luck through the rest of the healing! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. Hi @markdeerhunter! got any pics? we'd love to see your tattoos! Who have you been tattooed by?
  24. @gougetheeyes @MrsGougeTheEyes I regularly have fantasies of moving to smaller, isolated towns. And maybe I like "murder she wrote" and "haven" and other shows based in small town maine. ;p So I am excited to hear what happens when/if you move!
