Perseverance - Japanese Tattoo Tradition in the Modern World
beez replied to beez's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
@CaptCanada thanks for the solidarity, bro. ;) -
Hi guys - I am very suddenly in Paris for a few short days. I arrived this morning (it's almost 1p on Thurs 2/28 here) and I leave early Monday morning. I would looove to take to the opportunity to get tattooed while I'm here! I had two days notice for this trip, so I emailed a few places acknowledging that the *very* short notice I was giving would make it unlikely that there were any appointments available, and of course all of the artists were booked, which is what I expected, but if you don't bet, you can't win, right? Had to give it a try :). Sooo any local peeps / persons in the know / anyone have recommendations about some good walk-in shops? Any suggestions at all? Let me know if you do! I appreciate it any and all help! Thank y' kindly, forum folks - Val

@hogg I can't stop looking at pics of your backpiece (in non-creepy way). It's gorgeous. And just one of the many gorgeous tattoos I see on this forum and I CANNOT FUCKING WAIT FOR THIS EXHBIT! I seriously nearly wet my pants when I saw the flyer. I thought it was a joke or something - how many awesome tattooists can you fit in one show? (A shit ton, apparently). @Stewart Robson I'm super stoked that you are a part of this show too!:) (admirer from a far) (also in a non-creepy way) ;) -

Hi all! I'm a writer with a deadline and an empty head. I have a chance to write for a tattoo publication, and suddenly I am fresh out of ideas! I'm looking for inspiration for a tattoo related article. Even tangentially related about tattoos. Usually I have a million ideas - this is one of those situations where the moment I got the offer my brain went *splat* and all ideas went rushing out of my head. I'm a working writer who would like to transition to topics that aren't a) someone else's soulless copywriting needs, and b) are in line with my passions, so this is an opportunity that I am super excited about and hope will lead to more! To that end, I come to you for ideas and inspiration! Any topics you'd like to see? Any subjects you think should be touched upon? No need to do my homework for me, my brain is still working and I have a few ideas (women tattooers through the ages? a recently active thread and I *did* just receive "Bodies of Subversion"...), but I'd love to hear from the galley! Thanks in advance for participating in the brainstorm...I think I just need dialogue to get going! If this post is in any way inappropriate or out of place, I apologize for that too! Still newish and learning. :) Thanks everybody!

Bunny! Any way to get a copy of that list? Awesome that you have compiled it!
-
I think I would be remiss if I didn't add Junii Salmon to this list, considering she's a) a total bad ass, and b) she did my last couple of tattoos, and will be doing more! 'b)' of course is not a criteria for this list, but I thought I'd throw it out there ;).

I had to get the paperback, too! Never fear, the colors are still big and pretty. And so much good information!!

Maud Stevens Wagner Rusty Skuse I'm reading "Bodies of Subversion: A Secret History of Women and Tattoo" by Margot Mifflin right now. She just released a 3rd edition with a number of awesome updates and photos. Highly recommended! Both women were tattooists in their own right as well as being heavily tattooed!

I say go for it! What an awesome way to begin your collection! Or add to a growing one :). It will reward you for years longer than an iphone! I love gomineko books! I get sucked in to the website way too often for way too long. ^_^

Mondial du Tatouage, Paris March 2013
beez replied to sylvirawr's topic in LST Get Togethers & Tattoo Conventions
Haven't bought my ticket but I plan on attending...sooooo many good artists! I'd like to get some work done while there but am unsure of convention manners/procedures - doing a little research right now :). -
Did you get your appointment with Valerie? My sister lives in Paris - non-sequitur - I may be there for the convention, too!
-
Thanks! It's only the beginning :)

Have you gone to SF yet? Heard back from anyone? I called Diamond club just under 4 weeks before I traveled to SF and was able to get in to see Junii for a LARGE peony on my left flank. I just had the tattoo done this past Friday and I really can't say enough good things about my experience! The tattoo is bonkers, it is so well done, so beautiful, so EXACTLY what I had in mind, and I really liked the vibe at the studio. Everyone was very nice, professional, welcoming and just plain awesome in general. Definitely the best tattoo experience I have ever had! Soooo don't be afraid to call Diamond Club if Grime or Horitomo don't work out for you!! I suggest Diamond club regardless, actually! I had such an amazing experience and they work to accommodate travelers. :) Good luck!

I'm a big fan of psprint.com. They did a huge run of postcards, 11x17s and full size movie posters for me a few years ago, and I was really impressed with the quality and turnaround time. I also know a bunch of people who have had great experiences with vistaprint.com, so it may just come down to whoever feels right to you at the time!

A (large) peony from Junii at Diamond Club...next week!! <stoked>

In my 'collection', my favorite is a tattoo by Thomas Graham from Supergenius Tattoo here in Seattle. It's a gorgeous pistol that takes up most of my inner forearm, from my elbow to my wrist, with a banner reading "TANSTAAFL" (any Heinlein fans?) wrapped around it. I will post pics soon. I've got a few others from the Supergenius crew, but nothing that compares to the quality and general badassery of what Thomas made! It's funny, because it was my first 'real' tattoo, in the sense that it was big, colorful, and on a visible part of my body. I went in terrified, in a shaking voice requested a small tattoo of crossed pistols with the 'tanstaafl' banner, and was told to come back in two weeks. Two weeks later he had drawn a HUGE, GORGEOUS pistol. I was terrified of the size but also afraid to back down (I was much younger then :)) and so decided to go for it. One of the best decisions I ever made. :) Even though I've had five tattoos done at Supergenius, I still have residual shakes whenever I go down there, something to do with that first time, when I was so young and terrified! It's funny how those things can stick with us, even when there is no real reason for it. The crew there is pretty awesome, and I recommend Thomas heartily - I have an awesome piece of art because of him. I'm adding a large peony to my collection soon. I'm going to visit Junii at Diamond Club in early Nov!! I'm stoked about it! I'ma post this and see about uploading some pics. - - - Updated - - - I'm having a hard time getting a good (quick!) pic. These don't do the tattoo or color justice, but are at least somethin' to look at til I get some better pics up :). That's a "Flying L" on the handle, FYI. The first one was taken shortly after it was completed in early '07, the others are from today! And though in my earlier post I mentioned something about getting the tattoo when I was "much younger", it was really like only five years ago. I guess my early-mid twenties just *feel* a lot further away than they actually are. :p Enjoy the shaky pics taken under bad light.
