Well you sort of made my point for me.
Had this been a big black panther that he wanted to cover then there’s no way.
But because they are light, small geometric shapes a good artist in this style could easily incorporate what is already there into a design that would work I the style the op wants to go with.

yeah, you still have room for some more American traditional work, but also, some American traditional cloud backgrounds could work too, once you've filled out some more images

Yeah, I'm seeing enough room for at least 3 more small-medium sized pieces.
Personally, I'd stick with the American traditional theme . . .

Personally I think adding Japanese tattoos to it wouldn't combine well. I would definitely stay with old-school for the whole sleeve.
I think you best add as many individual small old-school tattoos to it, up until there is almost no blank space. Just tight them all together.
Find a good old-school specialist tattoo artist that you can trust and let him play with the blank areas.
I would also recommend you take a look at some old-school sleeves just so you see what I mean (many of them have no backround) and create a vision of your own.

a chrysanthemum would make the most sense between the skull/knife/hanya mask representing transitioning to death
I can't see what the background is behind the dragon, but waves would make sense connecting the whole scene, as dragons are kind of rulers of water in Japanese tattooing thought, and chrysanthemums are often tattooed with water
But as @Hogrider said you're absolutely going to have to find a tattooer who specializes in traditional Japanese as I'm just a collector

Dragon half sleeve was done about 4-5 years ago by the same artist. If you're in the Seattle area check out Honest Jon @ Highmark Tattoo

yeah, I think keeping the connecting material simple is the best way to go. hanya/skull/dagger + chrysanthemum + koi + dragon would just be too much. you want say two/three objects to stand out and the other things to be in the background, plus it has to make sense seasonally and symbolically.
where are you living that there's no Japanese specialists?

Hey, just so you are aware don't be surprised if a Japanese-style artist says no to you. There are a number of artists that won't be down with the idea of adding on and tying things together. It happened to me.

I wouldn't believe a word in that article.

I'd find a tattoo artist who specializes in Japanese style and ask them. Try to get a unified theme going.

I find that keeping my eyes open helps. When I close my eyes, I sink into my head. I'm a big fan of counting....I'll count anything and everything that I see. I'll also make myself identify every color that I see. I'm normally very fidgety, so staying still is uber hard for me pain or not.

Ok...here’s a few crappy bathroom mirror pics. Lol

The Led Zep Swan song tat was from when I was about 25. He said he can incorporate it into this current tattoo. It will be interesting to see how he does it.

    Just had a short session.
The majority of the line work is done.
We decided to fill in the inner bicep with an Oni mask at a later date. Pics to come in a couple of days....I’m a bloody mess right now. Lol

Just got back from the doctor. Clearly infected and put me on triple antibiotics right away. They were like, "yea we're going to give you the standard antibiotics because you can't wait any longer until you have to go the ER"
They also said to clean it with hibiclens and put a thin layer of aquaphor. No tegiderm tho.

That's good. I know that I am stressing about two appointments in September. I have plans to attend the London Tattoo Convention. Of course, the Boeing Max 737's are still out of commission and that's how I am supposed to get to London!

Ya, I guess you both are right, I just feel it's madness paying 3,200€ out of a total of 6,400 up front.

Yeah, that's more than I've ever paid up front - but he's obviously at a stage where he can weed out those who are truly serious and committed, too.
