I apologize for the double post just thought id share this jem, i got the amazing honor of working a convention for Eric Inksmith and in return he tattooed me for all the help, with this inksmith special, at the end of the tattoo he asked me "you want to know why i used purple?" i responded "yessir" and he said "it was paul rogers favorite color." i am so excited to have worked with him and to have heard the wild and crazy stories of all the guys i look up to that he was willing to share. this is a couple of months healed.

Here's that cover up from Aaron Coleman, it used to just be a really poorly done hourglass, and he reworked it and added a reaper.

I just got home from our little trip to LA, and I brought a friend:
I went to Bob Roberts and asked him for one of his tiger heads. He saw the spot I had open and furrowed his brow. "That's gonna be tough." He tried to sketch something on, but I could tell he was kinda flustered, so I said, "Ya know, I also really like your spiders." He lit up and said, "Now you're talkin'!" He drew it on and knocked it out in half an hour. All in all, it was a great, great experience. He and I chatted about music and, of course, tattoos. He asked to see my back, then said, "I got a snake on my back, too." He then proceeded to melt my face off by showing me his Ed Hardy backpiece, as well as his Horiyoshi III torso pieces. Coolest fucking dude ever, and I am beyond stoked on my black widow.

sickoflu reacted to Huero in Chicano Tattoo Style
roots of "Chicano tattooing" can be traced back a long way, but what was really influential on the art form was the tradition of public murals, especially in east LA in the mid to late 1960s.
These murals were scattered all over Los Angeles, in nearly every barrio neighborhood, but you had a concentration of them in the projects. Places like Ramona gardens, Estrada courts, aliso village, dogtown (not the venice dogtown, butthe dogtown projects, by the LA river, near chinatown) Sometimes they were political. The themes generally revolved around racial pride, community disenfranchisement, Aztec and mayan mythology, Lowrider culture, pachuco culture etc. Tattoos were and are an extension of that tradition.
That was the era. The end of the viet nam war, a massive increase in the prison population in California and the rise of biker culture. It just happened that Cartwright and negrete and Rudy where there at the right time in the right place. They had credibility in the broader tattoo culture, and exposed that style far beyond califas. It was seen as an underworld, undesirable thing, then it became chic for a time.

sickoflu reacted to ShawnPorter in Religious tattoos...on the non-religious
The first commandent says: You shall have no other gods before Me.
It doesn't deny the existence of other gods; just that you can't put them before YHWH.
So I'm sure the creation stories had a little from Brahma, a little from Tiamat, etc.
Anyhoo.. got off topic for a bit.
I'm an atheist. I'm covered with religious work; Tibetan Buddhism, Satanism, Hindu, Christian, Hebrew, Christian Mysticism.... you name it.
I don't really think there's a conflict with religious imagery on a nonreligious person.
Sure, having Hindu gods on my neck has led to a lot of conversations about respect and culture (the best being a Hindu friend defending me to her daughter- "if you love Lord Krsna more than he does, why is he not on YOUR neck!". Gotta love my Pushpa Dashwani!) and the Baphomet on my hand has led to more than a few fun situations but by and large...
It's no different than having Peter Pan tattooed on you. Which I do. Hah.

who: Ryan George @ Almost Famous Tattoos - Tattoo & Piercing - Miami, FL | Facebook
what: Oni Head
when: a few months back, maybe November 2011
why: I gave my friend Steven Vanni a ride to almost famous because he had an appointment with Greg Christian who was in town.
I walked into Ryan George getting tattooed by Greg Christian. I had some serious small talk with Ryan, Showed him the machine I bought from my mentor. So stoked on catching a glimpse of a great tattooer tattooing a bad ass design on another great tattooer. I asked Ryan if I could schedule an appointment.
