  1. Here's an interesting take on it by Shannon Larratt, creator of BME: Shannon Larratt is Zentastic › Nokia’s Magnetic Tattoos Patent — Prior Art? Stupid Idea?
  2. @embers fantastic work, and those eyes are mesmerizing.
  3. Bummer, the video has been removed.
  4. I will forever embrace the new (to me, thanks to this place) designation for my leg. I am at one with the squidpants.
  5. (well, really, Coquitlam, a suburb of Vancouver). I don't know anything about it, as I didn't know about/go to it last year. Anyone planning on being or working at this show? WestCoast Tattoo and Culture Show 2012 -- Boulevard Casino, Coquitlam, BC
  6. Just for record, my artist is not famous, and the shop is a small local shop. They also happen to be the cheapest shop in town ($100 an hour) but I had no idea that was the case when I first went there. I gladly tip $100 at each session too (but I get the friends and family discount, so I'd feel really bad not tipping generously)
  7. You don't have to ride that bike every day for the rest of your life. If you did, you may save up for the $2000 model :p
  8. Yep. My artist is almost an hour away (and across a border). I did 13 sessions for my leg alone, sometimes driving back past midnight after a seven hour+ session. I'll gladly do that to go to an artist I trust and like. This is not something I would personally skimp on or compromise about. Also, the budget would be my last concern. First, figure out what you want, find someone you trust to do it, find out the price, and save until you can afford it. That's what I would do, but to each his or her own.
  9. Sounds like the way to go. If you like this artist's portfolio, and you like what she draws for you, get it done, then share pictures... No, but Great Googly Moogly! There is a reason any good artist you talk to will recommend a proper apprenticeship. If you want your tattoo to end up looking like some of those pig's feet (and, remember, those are the pictures they put up on their own website, so it's probably some of their best work *shudder*) at best, go right ahead!
  10. I don't do it anywhere near as much as I would like, and have taken many months off at a time (hoping to get back to the gym tonight, actually). I find that every time I start again, I get a little pain in some spots if I hit "off", but the conditioning is still basically there. Ink-wise, my shin turned out perfect, but it looks like I am fortunate enough to have skin that just sucks in ink and heals extremely quickly. Even the heavy shading in places like behind my knee turned out perfect (and we packed a lot of ink in there, if you check the pictures).
  11. I also have basically dead shins from many years of Muay Thai. Felt almost nothing there. My artist commented that tattooing my shin was like "tattooing concrete covered in a thin layer of rubber" (from all the bumps). The Achille's sucked. The back of the knee didn't bother much at all (I was expecting it to really be bad), except for a bit on that large tendon that was fairly uncomfortable. The top of the kneecap was the worst, by far, and the only time I screamed in 71 hours of that leg sleeve!
  12. Makes sense. That's basically how I deal with my current artist, which makes me one of his favourite customers! I usually give him an idea, book the appointment, then show up and say "What did you draw up?", look at it, and say "Yep, let's do it!" Phil
  13. Ah, thanks for the explanation, @Scott R. That is fantastic work, who did it? Phil
  14. I'm kinda curious as to how that works. I presume you email back and forth with the artist to get an idea of your design, set up an appointment, etc? Also, kinda torn on the whole loyalty thing...I should see if there ever was a thread on artist loyalty... Phil
  15. First of all, thanks for the welcome. Now, "squidpants"? I have no idea what that means. Also, I'd be curious to hear why you think it wouldn't win any awards. Don't think the work is good enough? I looked at some of the work that won at the Seattle show (online), and some of the work is...not that great, at least, technically (uneven lines, etc). The art part is subjective, of course. The award thing is really something I think would be nice for my artist. Phil
  16. Unfortunately, I'm not a cool artist like most of you. I can't draw. At all. Fortunately, I do have a great artist. However, I am an...er..."enthusiast". I got my first piece of flash almost 20 years ago (a wolf howling at the moon. I felt not-so-cool almost a year later when I saw someone with the exact same piece on his arm...If I knew then what I know now...) This past June, I decided to work on a proper piece. Turns out my missus grew up with an artist who got into tattooing several years ago. He was an established artist before that (lots of murals, sign painting, fine arts studies, etc). She went down to his shop to get a piece by him, and I knew as soon as I saw what he drew that I needed to talk to him. He's since become "family" to me. I started talking about a memorial piece for my mom (ironically, she hated tattoos). I originally wanted just a drawing of Nefertiti on the outside of my lower leg (and also to cover up two tiny old pieces on my leg). We quickly got to talking and evolved that into a sock. The sock got done in a few months..and I liked it so much that...well...Maybe I should just show you: Ink Gallery This started in June. We got 71 hours in in 13 sessions and ended it in October or so. The shortest session was around 4 hours, the longest over 7 (a few of those). My artist has never laid down so much work in so little time on anyone, period. Since then, we've also covered up my original piece of flash on my chest with a larger, Fenrir-inspired wolf. I also have an idea for an arm sleeve in the near future... I'm hoping to hopefully hit the West Coast Tattoo show here this spring (near Vancouver, BC) and the Seattle show in the summer. I would really like to get my artist some awards for all his hard work and for the shop where he works (I love when people say "nice work". I always tell them "Thanks, but it's not my work. I'm just the guy paying and gritting my teeth.") I haven't read enough to know if it's OK to plug an artist here, so I'll wait to hear the yay or nay on this. Thanks a lot for a great site. Phil
  17. The first to go? You clearly didn't see B-Tat's "work" in the first episode, then! Ah, crap...got me to delurk. Guess I'm going to have to post an intro now...
