Hopefully finishing up my Jondix/Chad collabo back piece next Wednesday 10/19. Appointment with Chad at State of Grace! haven't been tattooed there since 2010, so i'm excited to feel that vibe again. Dreading more pain on the back, but hopeful it's the last time!

Becoming a Tattoo Artist in NY

Who better than Chris Garver to fill a crucial spot on my forearm? I requested his rendition of a phoenix inspired by a line drawing in Ed Hardy's latest book, "Drawings for Tattoos." Aside from that, I told him to do it however he wants. I guess he wanted to make it perfect and pink. "Well... it's more of a coral." Either way, I'm digging it and I feel much more complete!

my first trip to NYC is finally coming this weekend! Jondix on Sunday and Garver on Monday!! I need to figure out what to do on Saturday, Monday morning, and Tuesday... food, galleries, museums, i think... and maybe a stop by smith street. i'll be staying with a buddy in huntington, but if anyone has a couch closer to the city, i'd be willing to fork over a fee! ;) i might have to dig thru old threads on couch surfing.

NEW Tattoo of the Month Contest - INPUT NEEDED!
Hands On replied to Iwar's topic in LST Announcements & Contests
sweet! great points regarding the tattoos that are entered early and large scale work winning more often that small scale work. a couple ideas along with themes, perhaps by: - location... best knee, sleeve, squidpants, neck, etc - style... best americana, black and gray, realism, portrait, etc. - size... best back piece, one shot, filler, etc - random... best walk-in, story/meaning (<-- sounded better in my head). as far as points go, is it possible to set up the point system/code based on when votes/likes are submitted? that also sounds better in my head, but maybe someone reading this gets what i'm thinking. however this all turns out, i'm sure it'll be done right and not errbody will be happy, but i'm stoked to see it returning! -
Sending positive juju your way! Hope you're doing alright!!

it's official! Just booked my flight to NY for July 8-12. Jondix will be doing his second session on my back on 7/10... either at NY Adorned or Yoni Zilber's studio in Jersey. Deposit is in for Garver on 7/11... not sure what or where, but I'm thinking outer forearm is quite appropriate. I may have a place to stay, but does anyone have a couch I can crash on in case it falls thru? It would be great if it were near or easily accessible to Invisible NYC and NY Adorned. This'll be my first trip to NY... STOKED!!

Anyone from the Bay going out to Sacto tomorrow for this?! Can I hitch a ride?!
-
i have no idea yet... all i have is the date. but i think it will be a short trip and he's only working on in-progress pieces. he will be having an art show at Three Kings, but i don't know the details on that yet either.

@rufio the grass is always greener, as they say! don't get me wrong... there are plenty of artists all over the world (including the states) who i'd love to get tattooed by. just so happens i started my back with Jondix coz he used to be at the SOG convention annually. so far, i've only been tattooed in WA and CA. luckily, conventions bring great artists from all over the place!.. especially the SOG convention. there are plenty of conventions over there that bring a lot of great American artists! But in general, i would like to start traveling more and tattoos are a great excuse to do so!

for an abbreviated version of this post, just read the bold font. (<-- product of medication) I haven't had a session on my back piece in over a year since Jondix hasn't been back to the SFO Convention and I haven't been able to make my way across the pond. well... he's finally coming back to the states in July, so I'm booked for a session in New York! This will be my first time there, so I'm pretty excited about that aspect in and of itself. I have some time to dig thru some threads on healing the back while traveling... i imagine them saying something along the lines of, "it's a bitch. i loved it." Since I have no idea when I might ever get back to NY**, I'm also trying to get a little one shot something from Chris Garver. Not sure what or where quite yet, but it's in the works. Those two are already pushing the budget and pain thresholds, but there's so many great artists and shops out there! Picking a piece from flash off the wall at Smith Street immediately comes to mind. I may have to consider selling some of my unwanted material possessions on Crackslist and suck it up for perhaps a once in a lifetime chance. ** my wife and i want to travel to handful of different places, so returning to NY would have to come after getting thru the list. Atop the list for me is Barcelona to have Jondix finish my back!! That's "upcoming" in hopefully a year or two.

this arrived yesterday! https://www.instagram.com/p/BCMpJ0cKHvZ/?taken-by=mullowneyprinting a complete steal for $105! it's his first time doing a gravure print. i tried to look up this process on youtube and came across some interesting videos that weren't quite what i expected. let's just say, you have to specify with the word "printmaking" after the word "gravure" to get results that are safe for work.

Making a sleeve out of my Tennyo, need add on advice
Hands On replied to AuntTudie's topic in Tattoo Advice
since this is going on your forearm, you will be seeing it more than most of your other tattoos. pick something that you're going to love looking at. pitch that idea to your artist and see if they think it will work. -

no worries. i believe thoughtful feedback from a newcomer can be worth reviving a thread. welcome! -
sufficient lighting is important. for tattoos on awkward parts of your body to photograph yourself, have someone else take the picture or set up your camera with a timer.
