Just say no, who gives a fuck if he gets mad or is asshurt. I dont do gang tattoos or racist tattoos. You dont have to do everything that comes in the door. We arent prostitutes.

The only way I can remember what year I got a tattoo in is to try to recall what house I was living in at the time when I got it, and backtrack from there. Shit all blurs together. I dont really care, or keep track of money or hours involved. I just get tattooed.

Sometimes you might not realize how much of an asshole that person is until you're in the chair and half-way through a tattoo. Won't go into details because of the names involved, but suffice to say I saw an ex-gf of mine come home all upset because of how much of a dick this well-known & respected guy was and trashed another tattooer friend of ours the entire time he was tattooing her. Neither of us saw that beforehand. Sometimes you just dont know until it's too late.

I've worked at places where it was best that the shop help didnt get involved in what the customer wants/what the artist will be doing and at places where the shop help did get involved and made it more convoluted. It could go either way. Most of the time I dont want the counter to tell a client what can or cant be done, what something will cost, etc. Leave that up to me. Girlfriend or whatever it's mostly a receptionist's job. Greet people warmly, answer phones, sign them up, tell them an artist will be with them shortly and ring up what I tell them to ring up. One of the best counter help I've worked with is a dude that works the front at Bolder Ink. He's been doing that job for over 5 years and does exactly those things (also gets tipped out more if we ask him to scrub tubes). The way I see it they get paid by the hour to sit there and do those things. If I want coffee I can walk down the street and get it myself. We aren't rock stars.
