    I remember many, many years ago seeing Paula P. Orridge's white tattoo in the Modern Primitives book and thinking how subtle and effective it was. However, Paula also has many black tattoos, so it seemed more of a stylistic choice than an attempt to hide it. I do wonder if white tattoos are generally requested by people as their first tattoo because they don't want to commit to full black or colour work?

    Went to see a showing of Nosferatu with an incredible live orchestra accompaniment. I went for a single shot in the forehead, but Mrs Benway went for a full rotting face look that was genuinely disturbing.

    Unbelievably high quality of work - where do you even start? It is all so good, but I really love the space used in Stefano's red and black ship. That Rock of Ages back-piece is fucking epic. The last time I was in the Frith St studio I was admiring Jordan Teear's red and black tattoos, particularly around his chest. Does anyone whose work this is?

    I was glad to see that Joseph Roy was able to discern between a 'reformed skinhead' and a 'reformed racist skinhead', unlike the writer and editor of the piece. I'm amazed by how well those tattoos have been removed.

    V and Gravity's Rainbow are for me the best two novels that Pynchon produced. Both took me probably about three or four goes to get through them, but perseverence pays off in the end. He is often compared to writers like Rushdie, Eco and Calvino in terms of post-modern, magic-realist styles of writing, but I find him to be much more in a tradition of American writers such as Burroughs and Vonnegut. I prefer him to Don DeLillo as well, and I don't really understand why they are so often mentioned in the same breath.

    No, it wasn't sarcasm. I have generally found tattooists that I have met, read interviews with, and seen posting on forums to be as open-minded as I would expect. Interesting to find out that this might not be the case. I'm sure it as varied as any industry, but I assumed a level of sensitivity that was borne out by my (limited) experience. I wonder if having a few tattoos will change that perspective. The fact that you bring it up means that the time spent getting tattooed is revealing. Thanks.

    No. And I have found tattooists to be generally very sensitive to issues of minorities. I guess it comes with the territory.

    I personally adore beetle tattoos - there is something about the armour and the legs that looks interesting and pretty. Flies look great too.

    For me, it would be easier and safer to pay an amount every month using something such as Paypal, and build up my credit gradually with a studio. But I imagine that becomes a hell of a headache, both in terms of accounting, and admin. I noticed that Frith Street don't use a computer to make bookings and appointments, and I can certainly see the logic in that. I find myself in my own job starting to retreat from a dependency on computerised admin, moving back towards paper and pencil, due to reliability.

    Is it new material or a live album coming out soon? I got into them around 1990 when they were constantly being mentioned in relation to a lot of the UK noise bands such as Godflesh and Headbutt. Filth is very much in my top favourite albums of all time, and has been for over 20 years. It is brutal and stripped back. I didn't get to see them live on their last tour, much to my irritations. I'm not going to make the same mistake twice, that's for sure. I think it must be nice to have an old tattoo like that which has a bit of history. I was way too cautious to commit.

    I wanted to get a Swans bunny when I was about 17. Interestingly, as long as it was done by someone with skill, I would not have regretted that in the slightest. Their last album was fucking great.

    Hi CC13 - welcome to the thread. I'm also a newbie, I live in the UK, and I don't currently have any tattoos. Sounds like you have interesting ideas about what you want and I'm not very well placed to advise you. Some people might think that your introduction to a love of tattooing through those TV shows is a bad thing, but we all come to it from different routes, and one is no better than the other. I personally think that a japanese sleeve on one arm, with traditional on the other (including those roses) would look stunning, but some may disagree.

    I do love that hairy skullet gun crazy monkey-man is at the top of this page, so I have to see him every time I come in here. I also like that he is tan on his inside left thigh. I assume that is tan anyway.

    The shoeless hipsters are just modern-day hippies to me. Noah and the Whale/Mumford & Sons style braces and sock allergy coolness that stinks of Trustafarian privelege. I thought I liked Joy Division. Turns out I just pretended to so I could look cool. Phew, that will save me having to buy that really expensive box-set.

    Hi Cork- welcome to the forum, I am also a newbie here. Nice work there - there is a great thread on japanese back pieces that may blow your mind as much as mine was.

    Travelling to Frith St from North Wales seems like a very reasonable distance for something so important, and given that I have prime retail space saved for Juan Puente and Thomas Hooper, it hardly seems like much hassle at all. Getting work from those two guys is going to be a far bigger commitment. The only irritating part is that until a few years ago, my wife and I lived in south-east London and didn't make proper use of our locality! I worked a 10min walk from both The Family Business and Into You. Je ne regrette rien.
