I guess I should post mine here, since I've enjoyed this thread so much:

By Jill "Horiyuki" Bonny, State of Grace, San Jose, CA. You can also see my Scott Sylvia cobra on my right elbow (with my itsty-bitsy Ben Grillo spider under it), and my left arm, the upper part of which was done by Eddy Deutsche back at 222 and the lower 2/3rd of which was done by Horitomo, also at State of Grace.

Sometimes it's the thought that counts! And you definitely want to chase off the ladies that don't like beards, anyway. When I first got my nose pierced in 1988 on the East coast, there were actually people who judged me by it. I always felt like they were doing me a huge favor, letting me know that they were small minded and that I didn't need to pursue any type of friendship.

the only skull I have on me is by Mike Lucena and is below.
Gotta say I love skulls by Rudy, Hooper (who has that whole book of skulls), Jondix, Jensen, Garver, the usual suspects.... Both Stewart and Valerie over at Frith St have pretty radical day of the dead skulls on their website. Surely there's people I'm forgetting right now though.

There is no such thing as the best rose. Its not a competition, more of an appreciation, repulsion, or somewhere in between. My personal fave is Henry Goldfield, He rules the rose in SF His chest piece is a giant rose from Oakland's Shakey Jake done in the early 60's I believe. Many tattooers and their families wear Henry's roses. I don't have photos available right now , but I wear one and my wife has a 3/4 sleeve of 3 roses from Henry. When I got mine, he gave me the drawing which proudly hangs in the shop. Next to the rose it says" Dean, here's your rose. Follow the rose in life and you'll never go wrong. Good luck to you." Most of the roses I see today are very well done in a variety of styles. I like rose tattoos with a black outline made by people over 50. But hey, whatever you're into, there's room for it all.

Oh, I was quite aware of the effect reprimanding him would have. At the time I was really unhappy at work so anyone who they paired me with became the enemy. It was a sure sign that I needed to move on when I thought that ruining someone's day was a small victory. Once I found out he was a nice guy, I felt terrible.
Since I've moved on from the megacorp I'm MUCH less of a prick.
It was older handpoked stuff, yeah, but he didn't tell me who did it.
I asked to take photos but there was a lot of no-no-no-no with sheepish grins. What he showed me was gorgeous. Aged really beautifully.

I was working with a visiting Kaizen (it's a method of continuous improvement started by Toyota) trainer from Japan, and he kept staring at my arms/hands/throat when we were trying to work. I was starting to get annoyed because the entire point of Kaizen is lean management. No wasted efforts, no straying off task, etc. Finally, he tried to roll up my sleeve without permission and I told his translator that he had crossed a line of politeness and that it wasn't acceptable. He was terribly embarrassed and excused himself.
Before he left, he asked to see me again, and showed me his AMAZING tattoos that he keeps hidden. The translator had a WTF moment since he didn't know his boss was tattooed and my crew kept razzing me that I managed to get a guy who gets paid 20K a week to train people to keep on task (which is an oversimplification of the kaizen process) to be distracted while working.
For the most part, I think I'm heavily tattooed (to untattooed people) enough that it's "safe" to approach me. That any stigmas or stereotypes of someone with tattoos ceases applying to me in the minds of the people I have to deal with- that I'm a "tattoo guy" not a "guy with tattoos". Does that make any sense? I've found when I'm with people with just a few visible tattoos, I'm the person that gets approached the most often. Could be a coincidence.
Personally, I find that it's rarely an issue. The places I'd work that would have too big of an issue with visible tattoos are places I'd likely not be working at. At my previous job my tattoos made senior corporate management more likely to remember me and gave them something to talk about to me (despite me hating talking about tattoos at work) that put me in their heads when it came to special projects et all.

To me, unless you are from Japan, and a member of a Japanese "business" family, the Japanese suit is out of place. The more you learn about the culture and the history of Japanese tattooing, the "mystery " and fantasy of the work dissolves. What's left is a very rigid culture that is out of synch with western ways. The work is no doubt beautiful when done properly. But think of this, those suits are earned within their culture. When Americans, and other westerners coop the style, the core intent of the suit in Japanese culture, has been stripped away, and we are left with surface decoration mostly derived from Chinese art and literature. I like it when westerners add their own flavor. If a westerner is making what they consider traditional Japanese work, they are posing. Even if some of your relatives lived in Japan generations ago. You are living in Japan making tattoos in that system, or, you are offering imitation Japanese traditional work. With that in Mind, there are some awesome, inspiring tattoos made by Traditional Japanese artists. And on occasion, I do some poser Japanese work myself. As a westerner, the idea of middle age men having "masters" just does not work for me. The Japanese philosopher, DT Suzuki said something to the effect..... If you want to understand Japan, you must start with India. On that note see you in a couple of weeks, time for another digital cleanse.
