My wife and I spent all day with Stuart Cripwell yesterday. Healed pics later, because mine looks extra gnarly, but man...that guy is in a class of his own. Friendly, humble and talented. We've wanted something from him for a few years now, and I'm glad we waited to figure out just what to get. We're both so stoked on our pieces!

2011 Horitaka's San Jose Tattoo Convention
hogg replied to Lochlan's topic in LST Get Togethers & Tattoo Conventions
For the first time in years, I will NOT be at this convention. (Where's the dislike button for my own post?) Gonna be out of town at a family wedding. I'm so bummed about it. -
does anyone know the origin of these two skull designs?
hogg replied to cragdw's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
Also hard to get a pic of a tattoo that wraps around your shin/top of your foot, but here goes: Excuse the bloody teeth. -
does anyone know the origin of these two skull designs?
hogg replied to cragdw's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
The skull and mortarboard is sometimes called "The Scholarly Skull." I wanna say it's an old Owen Jensen flash design, but I'm probably wrong. I got one from Mike Wilson last year. Like most of his tattoos, it is perfect (and I am lucky). -
I flew from SF to San Diego and back in the same day just to get tattooed by Ben Grillo. It was a great experience all around (the Cuatro Milpas burrito was a total bonus!). I also got a souvenir tattoo from Horiyoshi III in Yokohama, but that's not why I went to Japan. It was just a wonderful part of a trip my wife and I had already planned. On that note, I'm more into the idea of getting small souvenirs in other locations, but not planning the trips around that. Small pieces are about all I have room for these days, anyway.

Yeah, I've got a butterfly girl head right on my forearm and I have more flowers than I can count (roses, peonies, cherry blossoms, and more) and I'm getting another pair on Sunday! I have my share of snakes and skulls, but most of them involve flowers, too. And just to pile on, cragdw, please wait before making any hasty decisions. I lived with some extra shitty kanji for almost 20 years before lasering/covering it. If you have more room, just get more tattoos. That dog tattoo is beautiful and is a perfect example of a tattoo with meaning that is not corny. Good luck.

Tattooers: What is/are the worst thing(s) someone can do to a tattoo?
hogg replied to Lochlan's topic in Tattoo After Care
Haha. I got tattooed at Goldfield's in the late 90s and everyone was telling Henry stories. One involved a guy getting the Scarface globe with "THE WORLD IS MINE" across it tattooed on his chest. Henry drew it up, stenciled it on, and the client approved. Somewhere in all the wiping, it ended up saying "THE WORD IS MINE"--and the client noticed it immediately. The story goes that Henry tattooed hydrogen peroxide into the D and fixed it on the spot. I've always taken that one with a grain of salt, but after reading Mario and William's posts, I'm inclined to believe it.- 54 replies

I would never get tattooed by someone who had no tattoos--or even just a couple--but I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Horiyoshi II (Tamotsu Kuronuma--no relation by blood or lineage to Yokohoma Horiyoshi III) had no tattoos himself. The story, or at least the story I've heard, is that he learned the trade from his heavily tattooed father, who taught him on the condition that he would not get tattooed himself due to the severe prejudice in Japan against tattooed people. He is the one exception I can think of. Based on the work he put out, and the extenuating circumstances behind his lack of tattoos, he gets a pass. (Not that the late great Horiyoshi II gives a shit about what some gaijin thinks of him.)

I've mentioned this here before, but a few years back, Bill Salmon told me to get as tattooed as I wanna get now. He told me that it hurts more and takes longer to heal when you're older. I don't doubt him on either point--and he would know!

Can I pre-order now, Scott?

Whoa! That's pretty gnarly. I have a good friend who got most of his tattoos in high school from a family friend who was a Hell's Angel. Two of his club duties were applying the logo (with a homemade rig) and removing the logo (and not with a cover-up).

After going big, I go home; I prefer to shower there.

Who do you think deserves some recognition?
hogg replied to Iwar's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
I'd say that Rintye is pretty recognized; he works at one of the world's highest profile shops. And yes, he's great. -
That is gorgeous!

Boom! Facebook Friend Sleeve Tat Is a Hoax, Artist Says [VIDEO] I, for one, am relieved.
-
That's what I did, Capt. And yes, I usually had to jump in the shower with my shirt on the next morning to get the shirt unstuck.
-
And fake--right? That looks so fake! Can a real artist weigh in here and point out something about the tattooer that makes the fakeness obvious (besides zero visible tattoos on her)? Please tell me this is fake. Don't make me beg.
-
That is an excellent point, Shawn. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that Shinji (Horizakura) did those sleeves.
-
Did Ami do his apprentice's sleeves? If so, my respect for him just shot up; it's gorgeous work.

That looks great! Thanks for posting it.
