18 days until O'Donnell starts my leg. The anticipation is starting to get to me. I still need to work out how I am going to travel to and from NYC. Either I will bus it or drive.

I think what this documentary is going to focus on is 'black and grey' tattooing and where it started. We have a lot of great stuff out there to watch about modern tattooing such as Tattoo Age and Gypsy Gentleman. We also have great documentaries to watch on our previous generation like the Ed Hardy and Sailor Jerry flicks, so I think it'll be nice to have a movie that helps define the birth of the fine-line black and grey style that is such a large part of our industry now. I think we'll find out that guys like Ed Hardy, Owen Jensen and Lee Roy Minugh aren't that far apart from guys like Charlie Cartwright, Freddy Negrete and Jack Rudy. I am personally really excited for this, but I guess my emotion is based on biased feelings towards my local childhood heros. Either way, I can't wait to see it.

I think they're referring more to the rise of fine line realism in tattooing vs. hard outline traditional. I like my black and gray somewhere in the middle.

This is interesting. The preview is inferring that all modern tattooing is a derivative of the chicano, Jack Rudy, single needle style. Which is interesting. I only imagine this movie will create even more of a "boom" in that style. Obviously, they are waxing over the influence of traditional styles (American, Japanese, Polynesian), but I'll probably still give it a watch to see Freddy Negrete and Mr. Cartoon shoot the shit and learn a little more tattoo history.

thanks a lot, dude. i've been slowly transcribing another interview i did at the roc city convention. i think it's the best one i've done thus far. hopefully, i'll be posting that within the next week or so. there's a ton of posts on my blog, so it may be hard to go back and lurk it, but i've posted about times that i've gotten tattooed since the inception. i need to do a better job of organizing it, but i have a hard time not being a lazy piece of shit after i get home from work.

Thanks. Although I'm a little embarrassed that my mane came up with the whole forcefields thing, I'm on Mario's side of the fence with this one. I stole that from the old photos of Bob Shaw by Bert Grimm. It's pretty much the only way to cap an arm with web and not fuck up the silhouette.
Those legs by Cripwell are an amazing example of how great well-placed traditional tattoos can look. Great design choices, placement and rhythm of negative space. A lesson to us all (especially me!)
I like some of Simon Erl's work, but the photo above has to be the ultimate hipster tattoo. Avoiding criticism through irony while embracing the thing you are being ironic about. It's the finger-moustache of the tattoo bloggers.
He could have got a "pigs is pigs" tattoo in that space instead. that would have been funny for the rest of his life, without a tiresome explanation of an internet trend.

I'm stealing these from a friend on facebook, too good not to post here.. They are on his granddad who got them from Paul Rogers and R.L. Connelly (not sure who did which) sometime between 1952-53 in Jacksonville, NC. This is after 50 years of working in construction.

Yup....I agree even tho i have a westernized Japanese sleeve started. I think its got "flavor" but its a part of my "American" body suit of a mash up of tattooing styles. I dont want to be from japan and not posing as anything...im just an american who loves tattooing. That said the images do mean something to me. I do think tho the FULL BODY Japanese suit is special and I dont care how many of us americans get them you CANT water that down. Thats just too strong.

I'm not sure what an "american crest" is, but I don't see how you c ould go wrong with ANY American imagery. Nothing wrong with a little healthy Nationalism...about the only places that it's deemed gauche are the States and Deutschland.

Yea but the flip side to that is its also annoying when people think that because I go to someone specificly that your only going for the name. If I see a tattooer I like work from I get tattooed by that person...I dont think thats crazy you know? Ill get shit from people who are like "you only get tattooed by big shots" etc etc and I just like to add some adventure/travel and fun to my tattoos. Plus Im older now and have a decent job so if I want a tattoo from someone whose work I like I get it.
