I have just had the worst day, including crying like a girl, yet this thread (with the exception of some of the sad stuff above, obviously) has made me laugh and laugh and laugh. Especially just about every single post by @dcostello. Thank you.

I was very surprised in my situation. He said, 'you are paying a lot of money for this tattoo already' but to me, it felt like walking out without saying 'thank you.' He thanked me and seemed to appreciate the offer, but was very firm about it. I have since heard from other people he does not accept tips. Another tattooist in Brighton definitely did not charge me what his work was worth, so I added a large tip on top. He protested, but with the help of the receptionist, we convinced him to take it. From now on I will bring both cupcakes and cash, just to be safe.

My tip was refused very vehemently at one of the London tattoo studios recently. I felt awful for some reason, so when I went back for the next session I brought a gift instead.

Thank you, @Iwar, @Raskolnikov and @hogg. Xam is a brilliant artist, and he's also a lovely, friendly man. And fast. Thank goodness he's fast. I came out of that shaking and looking like the dead. I am not a tough woman, that's for sure. But it was worth it.

I just had this finished yesterday and I am so happy with it. The tattoo is by Xam at The Family Business. The camera's flash really flattens the colour, so I'll post a better photo in natural light when it's healed.

Oh, wow, no wonder you're thrilled! That is a gorgeous tattoo, and a flapper girl makes really lovely subject matter, too. Well done getting one of her cancellations. I've tried, but am always a bit too slow.

Xam at The Family Business in London. He's known for his cleanly executed, very fast tattooing. He did all the linework and shading for my 1/4 back piece in about two hours 45 minutes. Thank goodness he's fast because it was agony and I'm going in for colour next month. *dread*

Hello, Hogg, Alanna, Lochlan, and RockelMan. Thanks for the nice welcome. I didn't mean to introduce myself and disappear so rudely! It's been a bit busy. Lochlan, I agree: tattoos, the workplace and colleagues could make an interesting new discussion topic. Hogg, luckily, my colleagues are really lovely and not judgmental. Some are really intrigued and want to talk about tattoos from the perspective of "I'd like one but I don't know what to get." The others just don't particularly understand, which is fine. Getting drawn upon isn't for everyone. Anyway, I hope to be spending even MORE of my life online now that I've found this forum. So thanks again for the welcome. I shall see you again in the nether regions of the forum.

Hiya, tattooish people. I've just found out about this forum and it looks like a friendly place. I have a couple tattoos - one in progress - and although I'm not an expert or a scholar on the subject, I do have a deep interest. I have a personal preference for traditional work, and the style works its way into my own artwork (which I do for fun, not for a career). However, I appreciate all kinds of tattoos and am looking forward to getting to know people here and seeing/discussing one of my favourite subjects. I don't know if I'll end up being a proper collector or if I'll be content to stay with what I've got and enjoy tattoos vicariously. I live in the Norf bit of the UK, where I work full time as an editor in an office full of nice people who do not appreciate tattoos.
