I've had the same guys as Valerie and I usually just mean mug the fuck outta them. Or I cross my arms and put my non tattooed hands over my tattoos. If someone asks me at a convention if they can take a photo I usually say yes unless it's because they want to go get the same thing done. Sneaky photos without asking is a really big no-no though. To my knowledge I haven't had the random tourist on the street photos but my best friend had some lady run up to her and start screaming "omg you kat von d" at her. She had hot pink hair at the time and has japanese and traditional style tattooing so needless to say she looks nothing like kat von d.

Where does flattery end and straight up art theft begin?
Ursula replied to Ursula's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
Yup! It's something I've done in the past and hope to continue. I just havn't been offering that service lately because all my supplies and machines are in FL and I'm stuck in Canada. When I do conventions I have premade patches I sell and I also offer custom work ;) -
I don't know much about Japan but I do know about Tokyo Horo. I'm assuming because of his name his shop is in toyko. He does traditional American style tattooing and he's really really good. I'm not sure if he does Japanese style but he would know who does. I hope that helps you out a bit. I'm on my phone or I'd google his shop for you but if you just google his name I'm sure you'll find it :)

I'm going to be in Toronto tomorrow evening till Saturday evening.. not sure yet on what's all going on but I will let you know :) GB stands for many things including Gravity Bong, Gross Breath, Garbage Butt and I'm sure a few more I'm forgetting. Her name from the breeder was Jezebelle and I wasn't really into that.. The puppy went to the guy who owned the stud, his stud came from the same breeder as my dog and was very old and close to passing away and all he wanted was a puppy from him so since she only had one puppy it went to him. The dog stack is one of the funniest things I've seen. They just stared at us like 'what, nothing's going on here' It's pretty awesome that you have a champion dog, one day I might get a dog for showing.

As far as I know, if you book enough in advance it shouldn't be a problem. I think all you have to do is call the shop but I'm sure Dari could let you know better than I about that.

Allana - I've wanted to do agility since i got GB i think she'd be so good! your x-stitches are awesome! also, here's my GB tattoo... sorry for the photo quality, it's hard to take a picture of your own arm haha... I hope this photo works.. it's from my personal flickr folder, that other people can't see... I should mention the dog tattoo was done by Jeff Cribb of Hero Tattoo in South Carolina. He's reallllly into dogs and owns about 7 I think. He is also the reason why I have my dog. It was through his friend who breeds working and show dogs that I got mine. If anyone is wondering the rose above it is from Eli Quinters at Smith St in New York City

So we've got a lady head thread, how about an entire lady body thread! Here's one that I've always liked! It's by Mike Wilson. And if you knew the guy in the photo, please know I mean no disrespect by posting this, he was a friend of mine to, and he had and did some awesome tattoos. I really like the simplicity of the design. The shading is so minimal yet so effective.

that's a pretty cute bunny tattoo! And this thread is awesome! This is my dog who I haven't been able to see since January as I'm stuck in Canada and Staffordshire Bull Terriers are on the banned dog breed list here. I hope these photos work as I'm just taking them off my Facebook.. Her name is G.B. and this is the one puppy my dog had (yup just one) and this is our other dog, she's really my dude's dog as he's had her longer than he's had me! Her name is Carmen I do have a tattoo of GB on the back of my arm, I'll try to get a photo of it!

I can not speak highly enough of the guys at BlackHeart. My dude got his back from Rassier and it's one of the craziest things I've seen! If i was only ten hours away from them I'd be there a lot I can tell you that much! I'm hoping that as soon as I'm allowed back in the USA, a Cali trip will follow shortly after.

I can remember saying to my artist when I first started getting a few tattoos that I was "never going to go below here on my arm" which would have been 3/4 sleeves... and now they're all the way to my wrists and I would like to get my palms and maybe one day the tops of my hands too. And I never dreamed I was going to get a back piece one day, then I saw a few good ones and met someone who does amazing shit and was like ok well I guess I'm getting my full back done! But as some other people have said, I never set out with the intention of getting so many tattoos, it just kind of happened, and still keeps happening... Dari - If I was around the guys you get to be around at Scott's shop I'd end up covered pretty quick I think.. I want to get tattooed by all of them, especially Tim. I'm saving a spot for him to put what will be probably the toughest/black metalish tattoo I will have. I'm not normally into that type of stuff for myself but his shit is just way to good to not have. I really want to get tattooed by Scott, Jeff, Nick and Cody too thought. I had asked Cody if he was interested in doing my palm while he was still in Jax but I pussied out and never got it hahaha.

HAHAHAHAHA amazing. So, how do we go about finding someone who will turn us all into suitcases when we die? Cause I think that sounds pretty great..

Where does flattery end and straight up art theft begin?
Ursula replied to Ursula's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
Thanks stewart, I pretty much agree with you on the "if you feel something is wrong then it probably is" idea. I went and read the thread Dave pointed out and it's pretty much all there... So sorry guys for posting something we've already totally covered! -
I used the "set a reminder" tool on the page to send me an email before it starts! I HATE to admit this but i'm one of those morons that does not know what time zone I'm currently in so I don't know when it comes on here... and now you all know my dirty secret

thanks Dave, I looked for posts like this but somehow didn't see that one! Kev, your paintings are really nice :) I especially like the second one. MsRad, thanks for the info, def clears up some stuff for me regarding non-tattoo things (i have a collections of antique embroidery designs i've been wondering about as well, and your post pretty much covers that) and now i'm off to go read the thread Dave pointed me to! -
Hey Guys, So I've been thinking on this for a long long while. When tattooers or other artists put out a line drawing book, or flash set which they are selling for cash what are the rules? Obviously, tracing some Sailor Jerry lines and selling them as your own isn't cool. Even though many of his line drawings are based on the people who came before him. How about those who just change those lines slightly and include them in their books? Is it only kosher for tattooers to, for example, copy a sheet of Rollo lines and sell that flash as 'designs by Rollo colour by so and so'? Sometimes it makes me feel weird when I see non-tattooers selling tattoo flash, especially when it's not drawn by them. But then I realize that when I sell my embroideries I'm doing the same thing. However it's not being hung up on a wall to sell to customers as tattoos. Who really 'owns' these images? Do the people who hold the copyrights to say the Jerry stuff actually own those designs? How much do you think a design needs to be changed to call it your own? Or will it always be that Rollo reaper no matter how much you've changed it? If you draw something by looking at an old image (rather than trace it) is it then your own? Or is it just your rendition of it? Another example, when someone puts out say a book like the Doc King stencils or the Long Beach Pike stencils, are they just publishing a book of stencils that they actually own? Or are they contacting the next of kin and asking permission? What happens when the 'if a person's been dead for 50 years their work loses it's copyrights' thing comes into play? p.s. before people start jumping all over me to say 'no you can't put out a book you're not a tattooer and you don't own shit' - I'm not trying to put out a book, just something that I've wondered about. I've had discussions with people about this and it seems everyone has their own ideas of what is keeping the tradition alive and what is just plain old art theft by someone who's not good enough to make their own shit.

I just wanted to mention something to do with message sizes.. I noticed when I try to make a post that's only one word, like "Nice!" on a photo I get the message "Your message is too short please lengthen it to at least 5 characters" Is there any way this can be removed? Or is it another trick to block spammers? -
that robert ryan interview is a good one for sure! at the same time, you have to be kind of dumb to get a tattoo of a black guy getting hanged and not think people are going to just assume you're a racist. If I saw that tattoo, I'd probably think they were racist too. I know someone who got a watermelon baby tattooed on them and they've regretted it since because again everyone sees it and automatically assumes racism. It doesn't help that he lives in a city with an almost majority African American population. I think the real lesson or advice here is choose wisely.

it's pretty rad! those paintings!

I totally agree with you. When I found out about good tattoos everything changed. I wanted a totally different style of tattoos than what I'd been getting. I have some fucking awful tattoos, luckily they are all pretty small except the one on my foot. Now for me it's more about who's doing the tattoo as well. I'm a lot more choosy now that's for sure.

Question for artists or anyone about tattoo etiquette
Ursula replied to mask0311's topic in Crazy Tattoo Stories
yeah somehow I totally missed Hawk's entire first post? Hawk, you seem to be a pretty fucking rad dude. A true benefit to the tattoo community. I hope that guy does take you up on the offer because it sounds like he'd have a pretty great time and an awesome story when he got home.
