I do have to say that is an excellent way to look at it. I was told by my mentor when I was getting into consulting to stand out a bit so you're not just another face in the crowd, this applies especially to consulting as you are not a regular. I will have to see moving forward if I can actually "get away" with having visible tattoos, but at the moment I have tons of room left and still need to test the waters first.

So I have my appointment coming up soon at Invisible and am getting a traditional(ish) skull. I am still trying to decide what else to add to it. My artist said rose, I said no. I was thinking snake, with possible the skull missing the bottom jaw. Its going to be around 5x5 and my upper thigh. Any ideas? Edit: Wrong section. Mods if you want you can move it.

That is an interesting perspective. I do have a question though, have you ever wished that you didn't have highly visible tattoos? I only ask this because I always think about myself possibly running out of room and moving to the "job stopper" areas.

Funny thing...On my way in from a smoke break at work I saw a guy with the tinniest bit of tattoo sticking out of his suit (wrist). When we got on the elevator I just had to ask (since I was thinking of the thread). He didn't acknowledge me talking till I showed my tattoo. After that he opened up really quick and talked about tattoos for the other 30 seconds we were on the elevator. He has damn near a whole body suit that was just about invisible to anyone (since we all wear suits). Pretty interesting... On another note I would add this. My sister is an art director and she told me she is thinking about getting her forarm/wrist/hand tattooed. At first I questioned if that would be ok for her job, but she laughed and said it might help! As far as I know in the creative field they are much more accepted, and it seems to go along with does your job want you to "express yourself" compared to a job that wants a worker, with not even a brightly colored shirt (although I prefer my all black approach. plus the nickname of Johnny Cash isnt bad) .

Take it easy man. First off I am not as old as you think, I just moved fast. I am not saying anyone's experiences are lies I was saying from my experience. I myself was a security major when I was in school. I am not trying to get you all riled up I was just giving my opinion. If you knew what a consultant does then you would understand what "interacting" is for me. I am basically the "paid expert" that comes in to get jobs done, or "consult" the company's IT when they cannot get the job done themselves. This means I get to work with everyone from the CIO to the the software devs. I know in the recent past the industry has been changing a lot, so even what my teachers told me not so long ago has been changing. Yes I was referring to more entry level geared jobs which can include network/system admins in junior positions which is what you are going to be looking for, since you said that you were finishing up in school. I was not trying to say your friends/teachers are liars, or that you knew nothing, just trying to give you a heads up from my perspective. Sometimes the internet makes everyone sound like an asshole, sorry if I offended you. As far as the tattoos go I, even being in a client facing only position am still getting a ton of tattoos, I was referring more about the "job stopper" areas. plus remember certs are worth their weight in gold!

Coming from someone who interacts with a lot of company's IT workers I will have to help you out a bit on this one. Most IT jobs that PAY will care about tattoos to some degree. Net/sys admins (i was previously) are getting crap pay recently unless you work on something very specialized (more specifically Vendor specific. Not Cisco, or other dime a dozen but companies like NetApp, EMC, IBM power series, etc). Some DB guys get good pay and have relaxed dress codes but not as much as in the past. As for the remote deal, not so much anymore. Most jobs that can be done remotely are overseas now. Think about it if you don't need a warm body why not pay less overseas? Just giving you a heads up to watch what you're getting yourself into. This is from my experience as a software consultant traveling to all different types of NOCs/Data Centers/Offices. Surprisingly the most tattoos I ever saw on IT people were at government locations...weird.. I understand this very well. In the world of "business" you not only have to be damned good at what you do but you have to dress the part as well. Just as people brought up in the other thread that tattooers with no tattoos gives them a weird feel about their abilities before they see their work, the same can be said in reverse for the business world.

First Tattoo Ideas & Advice: Goose
slayer9019 replied to HonkItsAGoose's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
I would not suggest a box idea. It will look like an incomplete tattoo until you want to add to it. It also sounds like you are trying to cram too much into the tattoo. Best suggestion would be to go to a shop around where you live and ask them, as the person that is going to tattoo you will know best what can be done, and look the best, after all they are the artist! -
Yea I have seen this before. The guy who owns my cigar shop has a bunch of visible tattoos. At the same time at least in my career the people you work with have their own opinions which could lead to no work.
-
I am slightly ashamed to admit that I did watch "the inks". I did only so to see the outcomes, and played them on mute. I really wish there were good tattoo shows out there. Simple watch a tattoo get done, and maybe an interview thrown in there. Tattoo Age is AMAZING but only has limited content so far.

So to all the tattooed people out there....how are your experiences with being tattooed in the workplace? I work in the definition of corporate America and find tattoos to be far and wide (as much as I can see). I have ran into a few people with visible work but usually they "get away with it" due to insane skill at their job. I once met an administrator with a panther smack across his throat! I understand from many conversations I've had with the people I work with that tattoos are considered "bad" or "poor decisions", and I usually defend the nameless tattooed people that are commented on while in such a conversation. This being said, I will not stop my dream of being covered, (to hell what they say!). I can do my job regardless with what my body looks like. I just am waiting for the day when someone makes a comment such as mentioned before and I can just lift a pant leg or roll a sleeve up and say..."so, am I a 'bad person' as well?"

In the fridge now: Gulden Draak, Victory Hopdevil, Stone Ruination, Delirium Nocturne, and of course... LUCIFER ! The one thing I love about NYC is the ability to get any damn beer I want, around the clock (Thank god for bodegas!)

My name is JP. I am a software consultant that travels globally. I am the only creatively challenged person in my family (family of artists) which to this day irritates me quite a bit. I enjoy collecting books, weapons and weird occult stuff. Metal (Cannibal Corpse, Bloodbath, Dark Throne, etc) is where my music tastes are greatest followed by classic piano. I truly enjoy cigars and craft beer but despise nosy people and politics (this mostly includes "office" politics). I hope to retire at 40 and build one-off race cars for the rest of my life.

Stencils vs. Drawing directly onto skin
slayer9019 replied to Jaycel Adkins's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
Same here. The only time I heard this was when my friend had his dragon tattooed with no stencil or drawing pre-tattoo. All the artist did was put a line at the top and bottom of his arm where he would stop so as not to go too far down his arm. -
$20 minimums next door!?!?!?!? wtf!
slayer9019 replied to jake bevil's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
That sucks! Your landlord sounds retarded! As a landlord his first mistake is renting to what sounds like a bunch of crack pots, second you should never rent to two competing businesses. Worse case scenario one puts the other out of business making you loose a tenant. On another note I love the idea of a "WE FIX $20 TATTOOS!". Might some people think twice about that. On a side note though, how can they afford to have such cheap prices....it sounds like they are running a bit of a front store of some type. I can't see them lasting much longer. -
I was thinking more along the lines of busy vs less busy. Also some environmental factors come into play (swimming, sun exposure), but I guess you are right in a way. When you want one get one,

So I am starting to hear that summer is a bad season to get tattooed. Other than the obvious downside (no swimming!) is it true that summer is generally busier? Any input from collectors/artists would be great.

Clashing of different style
slayer9019 replied to slayer9019's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
I can understand this completely. While a whole suit by one artist is already out of the question (have 2 artists lined up and one already done by another) I was saying more of a kinda blend of the styles, if at all possible (as I can see above it can be done!). I fully enjoy almost all styles and would want all of them, I just dont want to have a mess of amazing pieces all over the place making no sense what-so-ever. I.E. Traditional rose surrounded by bio-mech with a Japanese dragon on top of it all.... While the entire body theme is very cool I can not commit ALL of my body to one style, however I would like to keep at lease a semi-consistent flow to it all. I guess I might have answered my own question (with a bit of help). -
Clashing of different style
slayer9019 replied to slayer9019's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
I can understand where you are coming from even in my tattoo infancy. Massive, big and bold designs are very striking and awe-inspiring. I also understand the "wait period" idea. My friend is months and months away from completing his massive phoenix tattoo and even myself I have my Dante's Inferno tattoo that is two months in the making along with my traditional skull/snake design that is at least two sessions (provided I don't add to it). I think I will never understand the feeling of walking out with a complete product. Along the lines of a bodysuit I feel that it has always been my destiny (HATE this word) to be covered. I feel weird looking at negative space on others and even more so on myself. To stop before hitting the "taboo" (past wrist and collar) areas would be to stop breathing for myself and is not possible. The problems lie more in the risks of going to fast with too much "clashing" artwork. Wow I do love the one quote.... "Not everyone should have a tattoo machine their hand....Not everyone should have a scalpel in their hand" ....Epic. While I do think the "hybrid" tattoo does look amazing it contrasts too much for my liking for my own skin. This being said I am looking for the ability to do some mix and match down the line as I am going for full coverage in a few years time from now. -
Clashing of different style
slayer9019 replied to slayer9019's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
I am running into that issue already with way too many people I want to get tattoos done by with my still blank body already getting reservations placed. This problem gets amplified by my desire for only large tattoos (5x5 minimum). It is painful even at this point (with only half a calf done) to think about saying no to some design, or tattooer for parts of my body as it might "clash". Also I do want some biomechanical (not anything I have seen so far really) but more for the fact that it would be my only tattoo with "real meaning" behind it. I work with computers and would like maybe my foot done with a very dark themed biomechanical design to pay tribute to the work I do, which has enabled me to do the things I love. -
Is their anyway to incorporate very different styles to not "clash" with other styles? I.E. biomechanical vs american traditional vs Japanese traditional. I ask this because I am a fan of almost all styles and would like all of them just I don't know how they would work close to each other. My new artist said that you should stick with a overall style but I would somehow like to merge all of them somehow... (I am going for full body-suit coverage). Any thoughts?

Who do you think deserves some recognition?
slayer9019 replied to Iwar's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
I do have to say that the guy doing my friends Phoenix is absolutely amazing and is probably going to be the guy for my other calf. Regino Gonzales from NYC Invisible REGINO GONZALES - NYC - INK. Below is the outline my friend has started so far (6 sessions or so from complete) -
First time booking appointment before choosing a design
slayer9019 replied to cragdw's topic in Tattoo Advice
My next tattoo appointment was picked before I had a solid idea of what I wanted. I got comfortable after BSing for an hour and looking over his portfolio. I left with the idea of "a traditional skull leg piece". Only after did I solidify my ideas and text them to the artist. -
Yesterday my friend started his epic-ly massive Phoenix (armpit to half-thigh) over at Invisible NYC by GR. I decided to stop by after work since I close by and he could give me a ride home after. I do have to say that, this is one nice shop! Everyone there was very friendly and my friends tattoo is coming out amazing so far. While I was there watching I ended up talking to Eric Machalovic www.myspace.com/ericmichalovic outside. After talking about tattoos for a little bit I signed up to get one by him. (I getting a tradition skull). I do have to say I loved this shop enough that I will try to get work by everyone there. Just thought I'd share my experience! Anyone else have any good experiences?

I collect a lot of stuff, mostly books. I have a ton of mainly art books (a lot from my mom) mostly revolving around wood prints and old occult books as they are really interesting. This along with a ton of old lighters and weapons. My parents were big inspirations for both as my mom is an artist and avid collector (i have a few books she did as well) and my dad is a big gun/knife collector, both of them helping me start off. Now I'm starting to move my collections to tattoos, which is surprisingly more expensive and addicting as anything.
