  1. when i wore a shirt that showed my chest piece at work, i was literally paraded around by several coworkers so they could show off my "beautiful art." i played it off cool, but i felt really embarrassed. i've got more to say, but i haven't read all the posts yet.
  2. Dari, that's how it was meant. i took what you said exactly as Jake explained it. that's why i said consider it dead. it's kind of like the Gents slogan, and i won't push it further. Bryan, i haven't read your post but i look forward to it. i do know about contemporary issues surrounding tattooing and the public reaction to it, as my ex best friend became heavily tattooed while in Japan and i heard many stories from her. then again, she is happa (chinese and hispanic), so i think more pressure was placed on her due to her being asian than on me when i visited because it was obvious i was a western foreigner. as for getting tattooed in Japan, well i've never worried about it. there's never been an artist there that i felt i had to seek out, and i'm not a huge fan of traditional Japanese work (though i have a soft spot for peonies). it's a matter of personal preference (it's just not my style), not a judgement on the artwork or techniques, as i have a lot of respect for both, as well as the artists i have met and seen work in Japan, and those who have trained in Japan.
  3. i saw this on TV a few years ago, but had no idea that Shannon Larratt had it done. the tattoo is white ink if i remember correctly. i remember when he got it done in 2000 (i think, maybe 2001?).
  4. oh, people do. LOTS of people do. i volunteered with the No on 8 campaigned, and one event we fliered and stood out in front of was the Oregon Ducks vs. Cal Bears game in Berkeley. i did this with a coworker/friend, his husband, and his parents, along with other volunteers from the area. you should hear some of the thigns that people told Adam's mom. it was sickening. both of his parents stood proud throughout the whole thing.
  5. the verde soup is soooo good! so are the tamales. this is now my Gilman ritual. now do you see why i suggested it for the lst meetup?
  6. that Churches used to be a McDonalds. i remember going there a bunch of times while drunk and high in 10th grade. oh pre-straight edge life.
  7. anyone want to give anymore insight on this? i know a little bit about it from speaking to Horitaka once at a book signing, but i don't really get it. anyone care to explain?
  8. the teacher for my woodblock class pronounces it "crass". the whole class looked confused and i just smiled and giggled on the inside. he pronounced my name right (and not lobin haha). he was also wearing a beret, but that's a whole different topic haha... god i love community college art classes sometimes.
  9. Alanna, I thought the same thing later.
  10. what a waste of space. doesn't he already make enough?
  11. it's desperation, and trying to have something more than just that sinking feeling when you settle. the opening lines especially: it just sets the whole tone. you can just picture her coming out of the house to see what the noise outside is, and you can feel her excitement, even her hope, that what that noise has brought her is not another disappointment, like all the other boys she's sent away. there's a sense of promise and glory. it feels like the same promise and glory that fuels the "American Dream". also the layers of comparisons and metaphors like he's describing "Pretty Woman" but also the protaganist's plot in the song too. It also reminds me of the Lucero line from Here at the Starlight. I actually feel like both the Boss and Lucero have a lot in common, though Lucero's songs are split (at least i feel like) between the rise and the fall of the "American Dream" anyways, i could keep nerding out on this. i'll have to look for that video Petri!
  12. i can't believe you've never heard of the Templars, D. Loch, do you remember when Ques would wear that Skrewdriver sweatshirt? There were so many confused reactions to that haha. Also, i think there should be a thread just for D's drunken responses, and then his reactions to what he's posted the next day. What do you think D? btw, nice tattoo. there's so many Lucero lyrics that i want as tattoos.
  13. probably. in general, i'm not a fan of PETA though they have accomplished some goals that i do support/believe in.

  15. well, i'm not the only vegan/vegetarian on this site, and i didn't get into via animal rights (i was still a vegetarian when i started volunteering/baking for the sf vegan bakesales), but rather through my commitment to the 5 precepts. however, as with my veganism, sobriety, and my spiritual/religious views, they're not a conversation point for me either on (unless it's me talking about a specific design, such as the Prajna) or outside of this forum. i simply live my life and let other's do the same.
  16. i'm only talking about this one incident jake. not the general plight of animal wellfare. why does everyone need to bring up my veganism when i haven't even mentioned anything about animal rights on here?
  17. yes. i try to collect business cards for every tattoo artist that i've met, good or bad. i in general collect business cards and showcards (for art shows, not concerts), and i currently have a box that is over flowing and i'm in trying to get organized.
