  1. It's a ryukannon. The artist thought just going to the bottom of my butt would be more traditional for a woman and more feminine. If I was a dude, he probably would have gone to the backs of my thighs. I'm not usually too worried about how feminine I look, but I appreciated the thought he put into it and the examples of old, traditional Japanese back pieces on women he showed me, so I agreed with his suggestion to cut it off there. It's not done yet, but I couldn't be happier with it so far. It fits the space perfectly.
  2. I'm not sure which bums me out more, that there isn't going to be a second season of Tattoo Age or that there IS going to be a second season of Ink Master. I'd also donate money to see more Tattoo Age.
  3. I debated how far to extend my back piece for a long time before starting it. After consulting with the tattooer we decided to extend it to my butt. I'm so happy with the decision. It looks like a complete piece. What else was I going to get on my butt anyway? At the same time, I have the backs of my thighs open for other tattoos. I'm starting to worry about running out of space, so I'm really happy I have that space left for two good sized pieces.
  4. I agree. As a customer I don't want someone tattooing me who only is in it for money or to look cool. I want them to be dedicated and passionate about it. I'm a teacher and I feel the same way about teaching. A teacher can have a huge impact on a kid and really change his life. We don't make enough money to justify just being in it for the paycheck. If it isn't your passion, then go find a new job.
  5. One time, knowing that my cat was scared of the sound of the vacuum and that my partner was about to start vacuuming, I picked up my cat in an attempt to soothe him. I still have a pretty good size scar on my hand from that! A couple of weeks ago I opened a gate the wrong direction. It swung back and hit me in the head. I had to get 3 stitches above my left eye!
  6. @Iwar That's awesome! I just booked an April trip to New York. So far I'm booked with Sarah Schor and I'm hoping to schedule something at Smith Street too. I think two will probably be all I can handle on one trip.
  7. Even with seat covers, I definitely appreciated the handrails in disabled stalls while healing my ass. It helps a lot with hovering! Honestly though, I didn't have a hard time sitting. Getting up again was much more annoying.
  8. I got one in 2007 at Tattoo 13 in Oakland. Nick Rodin did it. Fun times!
  9. I'm going to finish my back. I'm also planning a trip to New York in April. I'd love to get something at Smith Street. I'm sure other things will come up as well, but I'm trying not to make solid plans until my back is finished.
  10. @Reyeslv It is still healing, but it does seem to be a "harder" heal than normal. My leg was really red and swollen the next day. I don't usually scab, but this tattoo has a few small scabs on it. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the lidocaine, or if it was because of a lot of shading and color blending in certain spots. I'm not worried about the scabs though. I think the tattoo will look amazing when it is done healing.
  11. On my last piece the artist spayed lidocaine on my tattoo after finishing the outline. It completely numbed the area and I didn't feel anything for the rest of the session. It was such a strange experience. I totally felt like I was cheating! I don't think I would make a habit of using lidocaine, but I would consider I was going to have a really long session on a tough area.
  12. I have some flash prints hanging on my living room walls. I love the way it looks. It's way more interesting than a lot of prints you see on other people's walls and we can't afford to buy too much original art.
  13. I love this headless horseman back piece by George Campise.
  14. I am a teacher and I keep my tattoos covered at school. No one has ever told me to cover them and I know other teachers with small tattoos that show, but I prefer to keep them hidden. All of my colleagues have seen them and most of my students too (it's a great reward for a student to show him your latest tattoo). I decided to cover them when I first started because I was a young teacher and I wanted to work a few years and gain credibility from the parents and staff. I guess I was nervous about some parents judging me based on my tattoos. I don't really worry about that anymore, but I still see hiding my tattoos as one way to keep my personal life and professional life separate, which is really important to me.
  15. I have a tattoo from Cris and it was a good experience. He was very professional and nice. He was all set up and ready to go when I showed up for my appointment. The drawing was good and exactly what we talked about. That sort of professionalism goes a long way with me. Does he come off like some sort of super hipster? Yes. But I honestly don't give a damn how you dress. I don't have to hang out with him. He gave me a tattoo that I like and that other people stop me to comment on all the time.
  16. Freddy Corbin, Juan Puente, Chuey Quintanar, Thomas Hooper
  17. I love strong, hoppy IPAs. My favorites are Racer 5 by Bear Republic and Pliny the Elder by Russian River Brewing Company. You actually can't go wrong with any beer either of those places make. Lately I've also been into black IPAs. Deshutes makes a great one called Hop in the Dark and 21st Amendment's Back in Black is really good too. I went to the Anderson Valley Company's beer festival this year. It was all you could drink from 80+ breweries. It was crowded, but fantastic. I'm almost embarrassed to say that I had tried most of the beers there already though. I love trying new beers. Anderson Valley makes Boont, which is a decent amber. My favorite beer of theirs is their summer seasonal beer, Summer Solstice.
  18. That was great. I loved how it was about Smith Street just about as much as it was about Dan Santoro. I just wish is was longer. I could watch tattoo shows like that all day long!
  19. I was going to post a witty/sarcastic response, but I think I'm speechless.
  20. The first episode has been posted! Dan Santoro - Part 1 of 3 - Tattoo Age | VBS.TV
  21. I was 18 and living in the dorms. One day a friend of my roommate's came by and said she was going to get a tattoo. She asked if we wanted to come along. I went and ended up getting a tribal sun on my lower back from the flash on wall. I had never even considered getting a tattoo before and knew absolutely nothing about tattoos, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I'm getting it covered by a back piece now (some black shading tomorrow will totally cover it). I don't particularly hate it or anything and I am almost sad to cover it up, but I really didn't want it to interfere with the rest of the back piece.
  22. My only tattoo regret was starting with a small one. That's covered up now though. As long as you can afford it, I don't think there is such a thing as going too fast.
  23. Kahlil is doing my back piece. He is a great artist and a super nice guy.
  24. I really like the idea of postcard tattoos. Every time I travel somewhere I end up researching tattoo shops in the area and talking about trying to get a walk-in tattoo. It never seems to work out though. I've either spent way too much money on the trip already or I'm some place hot and I want to swim and not worry about healing a new tattoo. Maybe I just need to be more organized and plan something before I leave on the trip.
