I think I spent five hours getting this tattooed on me a long time ago before i knew how to get tattooed and what to get tattooed. It still is just amazes me what the fuck i was thinking. Note the tattoo isn't even finished after the five hours, but I have to admit looking back I can't imagine trying to make sense out of the line drawing and what was black and what was skin.

In Portland Oregon it is required that you go to a state licensed tattoo school if you are not grandfathered in by previous law or were a tattooer in your previous state and have tax records to prove it. Now granted when this law first passed I have to admit there was at least one school who turned out some legitimate tattooers, but those people saw the harm it did to the industry and shut down. Now we have a couple of schools just looking to take peoples money, feed them the answer to the test and then send them on their way. Most students don't get hired in a shop and they end up tattooing out of their kitchen and those that do end up tattooing in a shop started by a student who graduated last year or some shifty hack tattooer just looking for someone desperate who they can charge whatever station rent or split to. Here are a couple examples of schools and shops that this has created here. | Captain Jacks Tattoo and Piercing Studio - Portland, OR - Hawthorne - Custom Tattoo's Forbidden School of Body Art and the shop that hires them Tattoo -Voodoo Tattoo PDX Is this going on other places? -
Mix it up I suppose but I don't think there is any way around getting a bunch of animal tattoos. Panthers, Sharks, Eagles, Tigers, Snakes etc are what tattoos are supposed to be IMO and you can never have too many of them if they are done well. Granted Daggers, Roses, Pinups are good too but what makes a dagger better........having it go through a panther head with a snaked wrapped around the handle. I rest my case.

How did you decide to cover yourself?

Yeah my friend said he called the shop and it sounds like a little advance notice and it shouldn't be a problem, but it's good to know Dari is here as well. -

Yeah I had to wait an extra week to get tattooed here, because the guy doing my tattoo went down in SF getting tattooed by Nick Rodin. Funny thing is my wife was in SF as well that week and I decided not to go so I could get tattooed and have some much needed free time from our baby. It sounds silly but I always just figured those guys would have to be all booked up because they are so good, but I think I got the lowdown from a few people who have gone down and am going to plan a trip before Horitaka's convention hopefully. -

Ursula I did the same thing for awhile, not wanting any visible tattoos and then one day I just said fuck it and got a skull and cross bones on my wrist and I think I got a panther head on the back of my forearm the next week and there went that idea. You got me thinking it's only like 11 hour drive to San Francisco so what am I waiting for. -

Yeah outside the tattoo shop I am the illustrated man, but at the shop I am just a guy with a few tattoos. Funny how perspective changes. The more tattooed i get the more empty space I see. -
I think if you look in the right margin while you are viewing your profile or on your home screen there is an icon to invite people.

Thanks Valerie and Ursula! I guess I can kiss Wednesday goodbye.

Rock of Ages Tattoo Design
David Flores replied to Lochlan's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
Funny was reading this thread and went to the shop on Friday and saw a rock of ages drawing pinned up. Funny thing the tattooer Ross Ferrie has a Freddy Corbin Rock of Ages on his ribs from right about the time Freddy was getting his back piece done. Here is a pic of the tattoo done this weekend, maybe I will try to get a pic of the Freddy Corbin one.- 173 replies

This tattoo was done on my boss Ross Ferrie by Pinky Yun in 1982. Ross always tells this story of getting this dragon along with many others of Pinky. Pinky basically dipped a toothipick in some black ink gave himself a few reference points and just started tattooing on his arm. Ross admits he wasn't so sure at the time but the end result turned out. The other photo is Ross and Pinky in 1982 and a painting our friend Ashley did for Ross shortly after Pinky's death. Note Ashley painted this while in New Zealand only from what he remembered it looking like.

There are a bunch of good horse designs in Revisited A Tribute to Flash From the Past. I think Kahill Rintye's sheet is the first that comes to mind.

I think the best advice I could give a person is to go into tattoo shops and talk to artists. That is always the last place people go when getting a tattoo and really it should be the first and most of the time only place they need.

don't forget a monocle

Areas of your body you WON'T tattoo
David Flores replied to Ursula's topic in General Tattoo Discussion
There is a client of the shop who is in his mid 50's been getting tattooed since he was a teen and has quite the collection of good tattoos. Not only does he not have a back piece because he can't see it but he swears once he turns 60 he is done getting tattooed. Considering he is almost out of space on the rest of his body I have a feeling he will end up with a back piece eventually. His dad on the other hand had one tattoo done during the war and was subsequently shot in the same spot a few weeks later. He came got his second tattoo which was a betty boop with the name Betty below it (for his new girlfriend) at the age of 82 earlier this year. -
By finally found that image, do you mean Googled tribal tattoo and found it on the first page. If you really want this tattoo I would suggest going into a shop or a few shops and talk to a tattooer about pricing. But I can tell you it will be expensive and take multiple sittings.

The other day some lady called me a secretary but she didn't know any better. But you know most of the tattooers I know treat their counter people really well and understand how much easier it makes their life.

Yeah he lost me at Shop Bitches too but i was the never the guys biggest fan.

The owner of shop tattooed a hairdresser in exchange for her cutting all of our hair at the shop. Will never do it again, I spent the next week cleaning up hair. Luckily it was done away from the tattoo area, but always think of this when one of those haircut, massage tattoo parlour opens up. I would like to think people would not get tattooed in these places, but I would also like to think people wouldn't get tattooed in kitchens either.
