Hahaha! My apprenticeship was a general horror show. I'm holding out because I ain't got much nice to say about it. I did get to tattoo out of my kitchen for a while, and that was pretty hilarious. Not having a table to tattoo on so doing chest pieces on the floor... oh god. Funny in my head but not so funny when I start typing it out.

Thanks for the props. I feel like our situation @ Speakaesy is pretty unique though. Despite having a partner who is a non-tattooer, I still feel very skeptical when I hear about it in other shops, only because of the general rule that lightning doesn't strike twice...

Good to bank these answers in the back of your brain for when you do choose to do some travelling into more distant territory - the worst thing in the world is getting turned away and going home. That long trip back home is a good few hours to just sit and think about how stupid you feel. LOL. Everytime I cross the border now, it's such a huge issue. The only time it's not is if I get a lazybones border guard who just swipes me through and doesn't bother to ask shit.

Larry - do you find there's a certain finished, healed prodcut that you can acheive with the single coil that you actually could NOT with a more traditional 2 coil set up? I'm wondering if you can get some softer, broader shading in the healed product when you're using something that, like you said, has less oomph.

Today we close our doors for our 2nd annual staff tattoo party. We fill our fridge with healthy, water heavy foods, beer, ciders, and other tasty drinks, order a whack of Indian food, lock our doors, and hang out all day making tattoos on each other. The rule of anyone attending is you have to tattoo at least once, and be tattooed at least once. Last year was a lot of fun and this year should be the same. Despite the fact that we often stick around and just tattoo each other like this, it's only the Oct 23 & 24 weekend that we spend an entire day having fun and putting out this much work. Jimmy, one of the managers here, has made a point of only doing Simpsons tattoos when we set up a machine for him and let him rip. I think today might just be my Bart day. Unimaginative? Maybe. But I like things classic. Will post pictures! I wish LST.com had an iphone app to upload photos. I'd contribute a lot more

Well, I'm not talking abotu customers specifically, because we definitely have our bouts of blowing off steam when those nightmares come in - and we are like any other shop. 30% of our clients rule, 20% don't say enough to have any idea what they're about anyway, and then the last 50% are trying. And yeah, you're totally right, forums like these are the way to bounce those shitty feelings off of other friends that are in the same position and it can make you feel normal and well-adjusted. But there's the dudes that are more in the game to talk about tattooing then they are at being focused on getting GOOD. I feel like anytime I meet someone who's been tattooing 5 years and just bombards me with bitching about this and that and "tattooing ain't what it should be" and this and that... it's pointless yammering about ideas that have been regurgitated a million times and mean nothing. It's always those guys too, that you look at their portfolio and can't help but think that if they'd just listen to someone ELSE about what tattooing is, they might have learned more in those short 5 years and have a better attitude. But just to throw a wrench in my argument, if those guys did ALL have great mentors, and ALL ended up well-adjusted, this community wouldn't be as cool as it is. We wouldn't have people that stood out as goal-setters for the rest of us, and we woudln't have examples of what kinds of tattooers we don't want to be. We'd all just be the same sticker-applicators and we sure as hell wouldn't be able to make a living from it the same way. So all in all, sure it annoys me, but in some ways, it's a necessary evil that has its benefits.

I use a discreet small suitcase. This is for when I'm travelling to a convention out o town and I HAVE to bring all my stuff with me. If I'm in that situation, I use a discreet, small suitcase and pack it really strategically so that everything is tetris'ed in with everything else. Pelican cases scare me because they scream "WORK EQUIPMENT." Also, if you're looking to have safety with them - I've known several people shcocked to find that the Pelican promise of being water tight and super safe was not at much a promise but a suggestion. Haha. They're a lot of money. Granted, I have 2, but I use them wisely. Whenever possible, see what you can ship to the shop ahead of time. It's the new way of doing things it seems and saves your ass. I personally was caught with work gear and turned around on my way into Maryland. It haunts me - I can't even take connecting flights through the states without risking losing my vacation. So... I guess what I'm saying is luggage matters in a lot of ways, especially in being discreet and passing through without tempting them to open up your shit.

Larry - the single coils are really cool. What can you tell me about the way they run vs any conventional machines you've put together in the past? I had someone once waxing tattoo with me about how his side-by-sides ran but I got the sinking suspicion he was regurgitating what the guy who sold 'em to him said. I'd love to hear your thoughts about the efficiency and comparitive readings.

...mostly because the fads are growing so thin I can't take it: 1. OWLS jesus christ stop asking me for owls. Go to urban outfitters and get your fix, PLEASE. 2. Animals with flipped up brims. GUH 3. The same as it's been for years. Trees. SO hard to make fun or interesting or different if you do like 10 every year! Alright. Phewph. Let's hope another one doesn't come through the door the minute I hit "post now."

Would you let your kid get tattooed before 18?

From my own point of view, I think 18 is pretty important. It's not life or death. It's a tattoo. And I think that it's something that as a rite of passage, you CAN wait for. It's not going to make your arms and legs fall off if you can't get it until the day you turn 18. I get a little annoyed by some of the kids from the highschool that come over and assume they can get tattooed. When I was that young I was scared SHITLESS to walk in a tattoo shop, let alone just saunter up to the counter and say I want a Dora the Explorer tattoo. I know a few people who've come around the shop who are 20 and covered head to toe. I can't quite pinpoint why that makes me so irritated but it does. Have some respect for what this is, it's a collection of pictures that you acquire over time. Not a race. And like Kevin said, when you indulge all those young ideas of what's cool and what you're willing to commit to, you end up with a body full of mistakes that you have to one day, swallow your pride, and say, "Yeah, I know, I fucked up." Just have some patience! HOWEVER... I have tattooed a kid at 17. I felt pretty sure that if I didn't do it and give him something cool, he'd end up letting one of his friends do it in their bedroom. Just sort of put between a rock and a hard place. Good topic for discussion though. -
