Thanks! Ursula-have you ever thought of doing back patches for shop jackets? -
Where does flattery end and straight up art theft begin?
Kev replied to Ursula's topic in Tattoo Designs, Books and Flash
This is a vintage flash re-paint I recently completed: It's different enough from the original that I would call it my own, but I wouldn't sell it (possibly trade though) This is an 'original' painting I did using a vintage reference: I consider that "all me" in the sense that you wouldn't recognize the source unless I put the two next to each other. This one I'd feel fine selling and trading. I reference old books that are usually pre-1910, so copyright is usually not an issue. But stuff drawn and painted from flash is just practice for me. -
Petri-I assume since the name isn't very common that this is your interview? Great questions! Robert Ryan Article preview TAM#23

Sorry about that-site update stuff yesterday killed the link for a bit = ( -
Robert Ryan talks about the power of negative tattoos in his interview in TAM. He mentions a story about someone getting a black cat with word "Unlucky" underneath and that person later losing that limb in an accident. I am very aware of the stuff I put into the world, so no devils, intoxicants, violence, or hardcore sexuality in any of my tattoos. I also started with a black and gray Immaculate Mary on my right arm and switched to color on the rest of my tattoos. I'm Mexican American and I know first-hand what kind of impression you give people when you have a shaved head and you're covered in black and gray work, no matter how well-spoken you happen to be. Plus I really like the way color looks on my skin. So far, my left side is about mortality (the only skull I have is surrounded by green vines and a bird), my right side is about spirituality. My lower right leg will probably carry on with the spiritual theme. My lower left leg is where my travel tattoos are going so far. My thighs, back, ribs will be larger traditional/neo traditional; as much as I like Japanese tattoos, I just don't connect with it culturally. But if I travel to Asia, then a small travel tattoo would be an exception. I promised to leave my pecs and stomach untattooed for my girlfriend. I get my tattoos as I can afford them, which is usually twice a year at this point (summer trip and birthday, usually). It gives me plenty of time to think about what I want.

Thanks Dari- my friend I train with has been looking for some veg protein options. As far as protein post-workout, I like Cytogainer-lot's of calories, BCAAs, a little bit of creatine, and tastes decent. General diet wise, I work in a cytogainer shake in the morning and post workout and three modified paleo meals. They're modified in that I include brown rice and sweet potatoes, but paleo in all other aspects as far as no salt, processed grains/carbs, lots of fruit/veg/clean meat

Costello-there was a flyfishing shop right next to our hotel on Bush St. in San Francisco. I didn't realize how popular it was there. I grew up wade fishing and gigging in the Gulf and my son is really into fishing. I miss my fresh seafood = /

Thanks guys and gals. It's currently at shiny with no visible flake. I'm planning on being close to the water til about next weekend, so it sounds like it'll be fine. I thought this would be a good thread for the current summer situation (at least stateside)

It's hot as hell here (105 like 5 days in a row here:() and everyone is swimming...except me. It's been almost two weeks since I was tattooed and I'm still waiting to fully submerge my leg in water. How long do you usually wait til you hit the water?

"Until The Light Takes Us" is an excellent documentary = )

I saw Gaiman mentioned a few times-has anyone checked out his short story collection "Smoke and Mirrors"? Pretty great stuff. There's a story in it about a stray cat that protects his adopted family-chokes me up every time = / Re: Russian lit- I started "The Master and the Margarita" , never finished it and lost it in a move-I think I need to get back into it. Petri-O/T, if you watch the Danny Trejo documentary "Champion", Bunker shows up in a lot of the interviews; Danny and his uncle used to buy heist plans from him.

Based on the response in the "Who Are You?" thread, I decided to start a thread about books you're currently reading or wanting to read or have influenced you or make good paper weights/bludgeons. I hope I don't sound like an intellectual snob, but one of the first things I look for when I'm invited into someone's house is a bookshelf. I don't judge anyone on their reading choices; instead, I see a bookshelf as window into a person's interests and passions, whether it's Plato, Patricia Cornwell, or Clymer's repair manuals. On my shelf I have Wolfe, Kesey, Thompson, the Bhagavad Gita, Chicano literature, true crime paper backs, travel books, and art/reference books. Currently, I'm reading "The Hero with a 1000 Faces" by Joseph Campbell. I started my Joseph Campbell journey via a conversation with AP Shrewsbury while I was getting tattooed (very interesting and nice guy BTW) about symbolism and myth. I went through "The Power of Myth" pretty quickly; it's written in an interview format between Bill Moyers and Campbell. "The Hero..." on the other hand, is dense and very academic. I was kind of turned off in the intro, but then it started to get interesting with Campbell's mythological anecdotes connecting cultural ideas about spirituality and purpose. Next up is Jodorowsky's "The Way of the Tarot", which I'm reading as a companion to the Telos Tarot I got through Shrewsbury. I'll give a run down when I finally get through "The Hero..."

I'm a 35 year old tech writer and artist in Austin, TX. I was born in San Antonio, raised outside of Houston on the Gulf and moved here about 8 years ago. My interests are traditional hot rods and lowriders (I built up a '62 Impala that I had to sell to pay student loan debt), classic motorcycles (I have a street tracker '78 CB750), spirituality, music (downtempo, hardcore, 80's alternative, hip hop, drum and bass), paranormal and "weird" stuff, grindhouse movies, and weight training. I live with my girlfriend and I have 3 kids- 5 and 7 year-old girls and 16 year-old boy. I spend most of my time reading (Joseph Campbell "The Hero with a 1000 Faces" is the latest), painting, and working around the house. O/T I'd like to start a book thread if anyone's down ;)

I haven't bought anything new in awhile, but I saw both Rafael Saadiq and James Blake at SXSW this year and really like their new stuff. Saadiq's "Stone Rollin" is a straight-up soul revival and Blake's album is really dubby. On the heavier side, I need to get The Warriors "See How You Are" and The Ghost Inside "Returners". I saw them both open for Parkway Drive and really liked them.

Thanks! Yeah-the mini-shop was under the stairwell behind a padded door with a small window in it. It looked like a broom closet at first. The door was actually ajar and I thought about opening for a better look, but I chose not to-I felt almost like a shrine :D -
An artist in person at a shop will give you the best answer.

The more people focus on the positive, the weaker the negative becomes. Do you have a Facebook page for the LST vids? There isn't one for Tattoo Age, but there should be = /
