  1. This article has been making the rounds with OWS and off-shoot Occupy groups for obvious reasons- great model for the world!
  2. I was considering some of the ideas laid out in other threads on the board concerning social interaction and breakdown and started thinking about the idea of tribes. Tattooing and scarification were used to identify members of tribes that practice carries on today in more regimented settings (prison, the military, secret orders), but has that idea transcended those settings? For instance, board members seem to have a pretty strong idea of how a tattoo should look; we accept strangers who post that have tattoos that fit that criteria and 'give advice' to others that don't have those tattoos to get tattoos of a similar kind. From personal experience, I know that when I see people with the sort of tattooing I like (or deem 'quality'), I make inferences that the person is 'cool' or someone I'd talk to. Interaction on the board with strangers has proven that we share similar interests, even though we come from a variety of backgrounds and areas, to the point of meeting with out of town visitors. Is this a way of forming new 'tribes'? This is total jr. social anthropology on my part, so I realize I could be totally wrong about how tribes work.
  3. LOL- too funny = ) There's actually a heavily-tattooed actor that you probably know by looks, Robert LaSardo, who's had to overcome the stigma of being a tattooed actor Robert LaSardo - IMDb Your professors/coaches drill it into your head that it's a bad thing.
  4. Different perspective, I may have mentioned before(?), but I won't get lots of black and gray/fine line work because of the Hispanic gang thing. My first tattoo was black and gray, but after that, I went with as much color as I could get with all my other tattoos. When I was in "Machete", I was cast because of my tattoos; it's another thing to look "the role" everyday ;)

    The List

I don't get tattoos impulsively; my current financial situation and personal life just doesn't allow for it. That gives me plenty of time to consider who I want to be tattooed by on trips, at conventions, or on my birthday (the the three times I set aside for tattoos). I started thinking about my next tattoo (always one tattoo ahead usually) and decided to come up with a list. The list is in no particular order, as fate decides who'll be closest when one of the three opportunities comes up. -Steve Byrne (appointment scheduled -Robert Ryan -Tomas Garcia -Daniel Albrigo -Tony Hundahl -Simon Erl -El Monga -Jeff Zuck -Lango -Valerie Vargas -Freddy Corbin -Murray Sell -Jeff Rassier So that's kind of the short list. What I love about LST is that I find out about new artists everyday so this list just continues to grow = )
  6. Mainstream media sez: Dressed down: "Dirty hippies need to get a job!" Dressed conservatively: "Entitled bourgeois is clueless!" Dressed expensively: "Rich idiot trying to act 'normal'!" It's the media, paid by corporate sponsors, who are driving this divide and conquer BS. I don't see anything in the list of Occupy demands about what people choose to wear = )
  7. I thought a battle royale was more than two animals; would that be considered a battle à trois?
  8. The flash book halfway down the page has some amazing ones: fuzi uvtpk
  9. So you got a prison tattoo in the free world? Really confused on this one...
  10. Yeah- I heard it was pretty interesting screening when they showed it here at Fantastic Fest last year.
  11. I was the asshole laughing during the gory parts = ) As for "A Serbian Film", I don't do well with anything that depicts (SPOILER ALERT) hurting kids- it just infuriates me, honestly.
  12. Looks like Refn and Gosling are pairing up again- this time with muay thai: Only God Forgives (2012) - IMDb
  13. "I don't understand how being so called anti establishment means not taking care of your own body. WTF." This is such a problem in Austin-makes a 105 degree day that much closer to Hell
  14. New for RedBubble: I like a lot of the concepts in your notebook @jayessebee - reminds me of old acid art :)

    Book thread

I was in Half Price Books looking for "Drive" by James Sallis, the book the Ryan Gosling movie is based on, when I came across a bunch of the Time-Life Mysteries of the Unknown books in bargain section- $3 a piece. They were all I wanted to read as a kid and were always missing at the library. Working on this now:
  16. The Sun card from the Telos deck-nice! I decided I want to get a tattoo from everyone involved in the deck- Shrewsbury (which I have), Ryan, Bartholomaus, and Garcia. They're all pretty far away, but if it was meant to be, it'll happen = )
  17. Spent the day at the Nature Center in Austin-last time I went was on a field trip w/ my son years ago. They had completely re-worked it and it had tons of new exhibits for kids (we had my two younger daughters with us). My favorite part is the raptor rescue area with owls, falcons, and hawks-birds of prey fascinate me.
  18. I find myself staring at my blank forearms more and more every day. I already have plans for my upper legs, back, and ribs, but once those are filled, those forearms are going to stick out to me even more. Hopefully by then, I'll be self-sufficient/employed; my skin has become a calendar marking down my days to freedom = )
  19. doh-noob move on my part. Didn't think to check the Tattoo 101 section
  20. When people talk about big tattoos, I usually hear back/chest/ribs, but I rarely here about ideas for the thighs which seem like great places for really big pieces. There was a time when I thought it would be cool to go with some heavy black traditional tribal work on both legs, but I'm leaning more toward something representational (a tiger, for instance) vs. symbolic at least on one thigh. Pics or experiences?
