London Tattoo Convention 2012
RoryQ replied to Iwar's topic in LST Get Togethers & Tattoo Conventions
I'm there today, can't wait! -
Thanks. I'm going on from the London Convention (there on Friday, we're flying onwards on Saturday). Just packed a bunch of long sleeve linen shirts as well as t-shirts, so if the sun is beating down I'll chuck them on. I was half-tempted to get something small as a walk-up when I'm at the London Convention but I don't know if it's worth the hassle... I'll take some pics of Angkor Wat..

I read an interview with Jondix and he seemed like a really interesting guy. They asked him to tell the readers something they might not know about him, and he said that he gets these blinding migraines that lay him out...
-
@Dumpleton Really nice.

Rib of beef. This was amazing, I'm not going to lie. Bearnaise and roast veg by the Missus.

@Androosh Short answer: I have a hand crusher thing that mashes / pulps the garlic gloves and I just add it after the onions have softened. Long answer: I used about 75mls of olive oil in a pan and add 3-4 chopped onions. After about 10 minutes or when they're translucent / softening I add the 4 garlic cloves for 1 minute (I have a kind of pulper / crusher for the cloves that I find works better than chopping 'em). I try and keep the heat down to avoid scorching the garlic and in any case then I add 4-5 tins of good quality chopped tomatoes, some sun-dried tomato paste and salt and pepper. I cook it on a low heat for about 40 mins to an hour and add fresh basil for the last 10-20 minutes. I made the meatballs seperately, fairly conventionally - 1800g or so of good quality minced beef, 4 eggs, fair chunk of grated cheese, a grated onion (!), another pulped garlic clove, hefty dose of oregano, salt, pepper, rolled 'em in flour and then browned them before adding them to the sauce.

7% and 9% respectively, serious brews made by humourless but robotically-competent Norwegian brewers. Expensive though. Six euro apiece... Seen em for as much as eight.

Having a romeo y julieta cigar with this. Which im totally butchering. Btw this is a marzen style Oktoberfest beer from an Irish brewery.

Yeah, I can see how Brewdog's pitch might be a bit redundant on your side of the atlantic! One of the best ways of describing overhopping that I ever read* was to liken to it taking a food condiment, like salt, which is delicious if used properly... And then just hosing it on for its own sake. For me, the 'arms race' to brew ever hoppier beers just doesn't do it for me. There must be a point of diminishing returns. *I think it was the brewmaster from Brooklyn Brewery that used that analogy.
-
Well, I just saw them post this online but I gather it's been floating around since July. I presume you can get them off the website (not us ROI people unfortunately, unless we want to get gouged with postage). I have a love/hate experience with Brewdog. On the one hand they've got a great forward-looking concept and I think they've got a legitimate niche within UK craft brewing. They're the opposite of the 'sandals, beards and cask ale only' CAMRA crowd, but at times they become a caricature of themselves, with the OTT marketing speak. Beer-wise I really *want* to enjoy their product line but if I'm dead honest I find a lot of their beers over-hopped for my taste. From time to time, sure, a Punk IPA can hit the spot, but some of the hoppier (or stronger ABV) offerings turn me off. I think I'm right in saying that one of the founders of Brewdog was previously involved with Thornbridge (them of South Pacific Pale Ale, Jaipur etc). To me Thornbridge makes some interesting beers - but without the Brewdog-style marketing blurb. I wonder which approach will win the day in the long run. - - - Updated - - - Hmm... http://www.brewdog.com/product/growler Looks like you can buy an older-style growler for 6 quid, the idea being that you fill it with draft beer from a Brewdog pub and it'll keep fresh for 2-3 days. Could be an idea for your train rides, @jade1955

@McNeil I was wincing just from reading that... Damn. Ah, the 'instantly break out in sweat' feeling (not nice).

Coolest growler ever? Holds 4 pints. Ceramic.

Compared to my chest and back (or knee also) getting my arm done felt like a holiday. The ditch and inner bicep weren't pleasant, but I'd take them over anywhere on my back.

@Scott R Probably something one-shot... I've got an Oliver Peck panther head on my right foot (see avatar), but the other foot is free... Or else something further up the leg - a reaper, a spider, something like that... These days I like to have a couple of general ideas and an idea of placement, and then go with whatever the artist seems most enthused about. This slot might not work out, but Limerick is only 2 hours drive away so I'm sure it'll happen eventually.

Shot All Star Ink (Ross Nagle's shop) a mail about getting a one-shot tattoo from him. I'm going to be in Limerick a particular weekend, but it's a bit of a gamble to see whether he's booked out those days or not. Be cool if he isn't. It's a crime I haven't made it down to that shop yet.

Angelique Houtkamp maybe? -
In this thread, we commiserate about healing our fresh tattoos.

I wear disposable / old clothes to bed when I've got a fresh tattoo but inevitably get the kind of leakage you guys are talking about. A snapshot of what it'll be like to be an incontinent old man, perhaps. One thing about wearing clothes on a healing tattoo in a situation like that is that you can't win. Wear nothing and you leak onto stuff and wipe whatever bepanthen / goo you're using onto the sheets, yourself and the pillow. Wear clothing and there's probably less mess but there's nothing more horrific than waking up and realising whatever you wore is now partially stuck to the tattoo. Got a bad bollocking from my older brother a few years ago. I crashed on his sofa the night after getting a session on my leg done at the Family Business. Twisting and turning during the night, I ended up leaving blue streaks on the flesh-coloured sofa. They didn't come out so much. -
@Colored Guy Don't get me wrong - I can tolerate a little bit of exposure, I'm still happy I went with the length I did. If I'm covered 99% of the time, that's good enough for me. But then again, I guess it depends on the job and what's at stake, right?

@Our Endless Days I'm a bit surprised by this thread. I don't mean this in a confrontational way, but how is what she's doing that different / distasteful from what you do with your own blog and tumblr feed? She has a business which arguably rides on the coat-tails of the tattooist industry, but at least she does appear to be running a legit business and features her own work. She may or may not tattoo. You have a blog and a tumblr feed that essentially hosts the work other of tattooists but don't tattoo yourself (as far as I'm aware). Why object to what she does and not your own sites? -
Well, my sleeve terminates about an inch from my hand. Today was my first day back in work, wearing long sleeves, and my immediate observation is that when I drive a car or hold my hand up the shirt cuff naturally drops back a little bit and the edge of the tattoo becomes visible. It won't be a problem for me, but my observation is that @Lance was dead right when he said that the only way to be sure is to go for a 3/4 length sleeve.

I slept on my front, or on my side in some cases. When my back was really tender I found that I would wake up in the same position as I'd fallen asleep in - it was like my body knew not to move too much. As for applying stuff to it: As mentioned above, this is where a partner comes in handy. By the end, though, I'd actually gotten to be able to do it myself, just takes a bit of flexibility. Overall the waistline was the worst part. Going to work wearing a shirt and pants sucked. I felt like my back healed quicker than some other parts of my body (my foot, for example).
