I really don't know why you are coming out swinging for Dan. He's absolutely right. P.S. The fact that you think jailhouse tattoos look like American traditional tattoos tells me everything I need to know about you. 🙂

By no means should you take my opinion as medical advice. However, I am surprised to hear that the doctor concluded the tattoo ink caused the swelling. There are reports of tattoo ink staining lymp nodes (found post-autopsy I believe) but I dont' think any of these cases involved lymp node swelling as a direct result of being tattooed. Also, placement would be irrelevant. The ink gets to the tattoo via your body's systems and not just because it's placed on your arm. If you're confident the doctor's assessment is accurate then you might want to avoid another tattoo or do something small and see how your body reacts this time. Take your time. Be patient. The trick is to learn how to recognize a good one.

I am not opposed to freehand custom tribal - at all. I mean, look at Sef Kavafornia's work. Actually, compare his work to the photo above. Post review, IMO, there *is* no comparison. It's not snobbery to know the difference between a good tattoo, a mediocre tattoo and a bad tattoo. Of course, criticism needs to be fair and not personal. All good if you don't like traditional tattoos but to Dan's point, traditional tattoos are not the same as jailhouse tattoos. There may be an overlap is some imagery but they are vastly different things (do some research on the history of both American traditional, jailhouse, Chicano, and Russian tattoos). As far as today's tattoos looking like shite in 20 years, I have this to offer - everything has a "date" associated with it. Clothes, hair, cars - whatever. Just because it is from a different decade doesn't mean that it's shite. Maybe less fashionable, but quality is quality.

I'm busy healing my new little addition, I got it on my arm and between the easy spot and the tebori the experience was the easiest to date. I got a Daruma doll which was one of the two things I originally set out to get anyways, I have some rock climbing goals to reach and if I do I'll get the eye blacked in during the Jacksonville Imperial Arts fest. Pics in a few days once the eye calms down.

Just my opinion, but the best way is to find an artist who's work you like and talk to them.

so I had to jump in here,jail house tattoos rarely have color in them and they are rarely "american traditional", whether you like it or not,a well applied "american traditional" tattoo will outlast pretty much ANY other style around. and second, LOL that reference of tribal you posted was not a quality tattoo at all IMO,it's a shitty mess IMO,there is no good color saturation,not a good design, and the middle band is scratcher shit for sure, and yes,it's outdated trendy crap IMO. it doesn't make me "low class" or a snob to critique a tattoo,no matter what style it is,it's just my opinion.
