Ok I sat in the chair for a little over 5 hours today. Off to a great start. Will go back in about three weeks for color. My artist was excited when I presented him the Cuban cigar. The afternoon passed quickly with lots of great conversation. Little did my artist know the old guy had attended Tool concerts... Before 20 year old Dragon showing a little age. Been lurking for a while, first post. The information on this forum is so helpful - thanks to all of you. I've been getting tattooed for over 20 years, starting with the obligatory celtic knot on my ankle in the early 90's (later lasered off). I took a long hiatus from getting tattooed and then dove in with a large back piece from Greg Whitehead in 2014. I'd been considering getting something more visible for a while, but needed to wait until I could fully commit mentally. I'd been following Robert Ryan for a few years on Instagram, love all of his work, and knew I wanted him to do my tattoo. Finally took the plunge last weekend and couldn't be happier. The design is taken from one of his paintings, Bardo Thodol. We left the bottom of the tattoo intentionally open-ended so I can add to it later. Wonderful experience at Electric Tattoo in Asbury Park, great people all around, and VICE was there shooting a documentary on Robert for the Tattoo Age series. My tattoo might be famous! We'll see if it makes it into the final cut. Anyway, great to be here!

Yep, that piece doesn't have enough contrast. You need to learn something about what a tattoo can be and how it will last. Hang around here for a few months and you should get the idea.

Thanks! Yeah, I've been getting a consistent response to drop the flowers off the bottom. I'll probably go that route. It was done by Daniel Mesen at Black Torch in Baton Rouge, LA I'll probably be going back to him for any of my traditional work.

That's a really nice and solid first tattoo! Excellent placement as well. And no, nothing odd about it at all; nothing odd about only being tattooed on your legs, and nothing odd about having only a single tattoo on your leg either. So, there's no need to rush into getting more coverage on your legs as fast as possible, if that's a concern for you. It'll no doubt look great with some more traditional pieces to accompany it, but it looks killer by itself as well. Regarding the designs you posted, I like the first one the best. It has a cool and solid silhouette, which I think is somewhat messed up by the three added roses. My best advice though, would be to find a tattooer whose stuff you really like, provide a few pointers on what you like and what you don't like i.e. "pilot girl, not too much floral stuff" - and then let him/her do their thing. That's what works for me at least. Either way, it looks like you're off to a great start! By the way, who did your tiger tattoo?

that would end up looking like a big black blob on your arm,IMO that would not transfer well to a tattoo. maybe you should wait a few years to really think about it and find a good artist. and welcome to the forum. sit and stay a while and do some reading and then do more reading here.
