  2. Just got this guy on friday from Chris Marchetto. It's my first one from him and I'm pretty stoked about it. Got another appointment for next month. Also, not sure why the picture is coming out sideways.

  6. Thanks all! I ended up buying Tegaderm at Walgreens after this post. I took the Saniderm off in the shower and cleaned it and applied a fresh sheet of Tegaderm. For what it's worth, my tattoo looks and feels great! No redness or swelling, no warmth or smell. It's got a tight shiny look to it, and felt a little dry, so I'm hoping the Tegaderm will help trap some moisture in there. I'm thinking I'll leave the new sheet on for 2-3 days. Will update!

  7. Why not get another small tattoo as well? It would spread that $150 out a lot better.

  8. Shoot.. I work for a Fortune 100 company and I have 17 tattoos to date. I cover them at work, some people know I have them, some don't and it doesn't matter to anyone it seems. I would just go full speed ahead and book those appointments, life gets short by the time 60 comes around.

  9. I've seen some ugly husband-and-wife dynamics at tattoo appointments, but this was decades ago. Take separate cars in case one of you wants to leave before the other. Craziest thing so far... wife sat in the car blowing the horn outside, she was out of patience I suppose... what a poop mist it spread over the shop vibe....

  10. Have any of you played "The Most Dangerous Game" yet? Seems like a fun way to get an interesting tattoo, as long as you're into his style.

  12. I don't like having people at my appointments. It does something to the vibe with the artist. My son is more fun than my spouse though ?

  15. There are just some things you shouldn't try to save money one. And putting something on your body that will last your entire life is one of them. As Zig Zigler used to say, "Good things are seldom cheap and cheap things are seldom good."

Those times are pretty average. I think the difference is yours is REALLY SLOW. Again, think about a different artist perhaps?

  19. Bumping this topic - interesting reading! I’ve only got one small tattoo from 40-odd years ago, but I’m planning a back piece. Even though I haven’t started the actual tattoo yet, I have already learned things as I’ve made my decision and started planning. I’m learning that tattooing is a process and that for me most important part of the process is not in the studio, it is in the brain. It took me over 30 years to decide to get my second tattoo. Even though I wanted one, I didn’t think it fit my professional image, and I was afraid of being judged negatively by friends and colleagues. I waffled between “should I or shouldn’t I?” for decades. Over time my desire to get a tattoo grew stronger and stronger. And to complicate matters, my interest evolved from “getting a tattoo” into “getting a very large tattoo.” I couldn’t understand why I was unable to make a decision. I spent a lot of time analyzing it and ended up writing down the whole history of my interest in tattooing, as far back as far as I could remember — every incident, what I saw, what my thoughts were along the way, and what was going on in my life, my feelings of conflict— everything I could think of (condensed, but still fairly long version here). Ultimately that led me to the realization that my indecision was not really about whether or not to get a tattoo, but was really an expression of my inability to be the person that I wanted to be in life. I came to the realization that I had lived my whole life trying to fit into an image of what I perceived that others and my profession wanted me should be, while completely burying what I wanted to be. I realized that I had unwittingly gradually reprogrammed myself to believe that by “fitting in” I would become the “right kind of person.” That may have been one of the most important things I learned about myself in my 60-odd years on the planet. Once I acepted that, it was easy to decide to go ahead with my tattoo project, but more importantly It helped me start to live my life more as I wanted, and move toward a better balance between the professional me and the private me. It was only through trying to decide to get a large tattoo that I was able to find that out about myself. I’m not sure if I could have gotten to that realization any other way. I think that for me it took a confrontation with a desire to do something that in my world was really radical, extreme, and beyond the norm (getting a huge tattoo) to jolt me into exploring and learning something deep in me.

Here is some more tattoo news, though it's not very happy news. :( Art Work Rebels in Portland burned to the ground due to a gas line leak. 100% of what was in the shop was lost. Nobody who works there was hurt, but apparently the girl who was living upstairs from them is in the hospital and a bunch of firefighters also got hurt trying to get to her. Jeff Croci has set up a gofundme to help them get back on their feet. If you're feeling like you have a spare buck, I imagine every little bit helps.

  26. @Kracov I know that: "Man mildly inconvenienced due to voluntary, likely to be ostracizing, cosmetic choice" isn't as fun a headline but come on... This is not a civil rights instance. Or at least it shouldn't be. Equating this circumstance to the terrible divisions and hate people faced (and still do in many parts of the world) is "embarrassing". Lumping things like this in with legitimate cases of discrimination trivializes the injustices those people are facing. And, since you side-stepped it in your other response: Who's rights are being violated if you are required by law to provide a service or labor for someone against your will because of a cosmetic life choice they made? Do others have a right to your labor simply because they ask? Rights have to go both ways if they are rights.

  28. No one ever must get any tattoo, well at least outside of Russian prisons. So if you are going to get someone's name make it bold as hell because you love you mom or kid that much!!! Or delicate and beautiful, just saying don't get a name thinking you may want to cover it one day, that's just dumb.

  30. Working out! Prior to getting my half sleeves I had a complex about my arms being too skinny/flabby to get tattooed and that it just wouldn't look good. I was extremely motivated and started going to a gym 3-4 times a week trying to lose weight and add some muscle to my flimsy arms. I wound up getting started on them anyways because I finally realized that rationale of thinking was entirely stupid and in no way shape or form should have prevented me from getting what I wanted. Once I got into a routine though I managed to stick with it ever since and lost about 50lbs. I'm healthier then I've ever been and no longer have to worry about my blood pressure.

  31. ^ this. Tattoos have taught me a lot about being comfortable in my own skin, and comfortable with being myself in relation to the outside world. It's not so much an act of rebellion (which I think has kind of been taken away, to a degree) but an act of intentionally altering your appearance, in a way of your choosing. Making that choice is the liberating part to me. Also, like everyone else said, the number of super cool people I've already met through tattoos in some way is awesome. People from all walks of life, whom I wouldn't had made that initial connection with if it weren't for tattoos.

  32. Tattoo experiences have got me into some cool music: Mastadon, The Dickies, Three 6 Mafia, American Me (soundtrack). But most importantly tattoos are teaching me how to own it, how to be confident being my own god damn self !
