  3. Thanks Gino! I think it looks japanese too which is what I think bugs me the most about it. He is a traditional tattoo artist, almost all of his work I've seen is american traditional. When I went in he asked me if what I was after was japanese, and I said no definately american traditional, and he said ok. I thought the sketch looked a little more japanese but assumed he knew what he was doing. I like the side in pic 2,3 and 4, but what I want to cover up is the 'swirly bits' because they do seem so japanese. Also very different to the other side which is more layered cloud shapes than swirls. I thought it may end up too dark if I covered so thanks for the advice guys, I'll sit with it. Maybe just fill in some of the white with more black on the swirls to give it a more traditional effect. Planning an umbrella with rain drops coming from under it to go above this, so if I go super traditional with that maybe it'll offset the japanese look. What do you guys think about the raised linework on pic 1? It's only on the corners where it zigs, and hard to tell in photo. But its very thick and raised in that spot even 6 months later, like it catches the light and everything. Is it scarring? Will that go down like the rest did eventually? Thanks guys.

  4. So this is my first reply on this site, but I honestly think your piece looks great! I wouldn't say its american traditional however - definitely Japanese. But looks like your artist knew what he was doing. I dig the lightning bolts AND the clouds the way that they are. Out of all my ink, my artist has made some last minute adjustments too that I "rolled with" and I'm glad I did. Mine were basically placement adjustments, but trust your artist if they have any sort of prestige to their name!

  5. I think Brian Bruno, Jason Kundell, Kahlil Rintye, Jill Bonny and Kevin Leblanc who aren't huge self promoters are widely overlooked by the "main stream." This serves as a double edged sword in my opinion. In talking with some of these artists who intentionally avoid social media still have a steady stream of clients coming in for work. I also think there's something to be said for artists to gain the recognition we feel they deserve. You also have the likes of Mike Roper who intentionally keep it low key. I would venture to say he's only known by the dedicated few but thats all by design. In the end I don't think I'd change a thing. Its nice to get together with those who share the same vision of what tattooing mean to them, who appreciating good work and the artists who have withstood the change in culture. The dudes laying down great tats decade after decade without letting the latest trends in. Tattooing needs the "Brads" of the world are getting super pumped about their new water color hand tattoos from the coolest artist this week.

  7. That's pretty dark already for a coverup, and I don't think too many artists have any real experience with the whole "white over black" thing. Personally, I think it's fine enough - and if you're going to end up with a full sleeve of storm then it should blend in fairly well.

    Lower leg tattoo

Just a quick follow-up, in the end I had no swelling at all and I just took off the tegaderm since the tattoo was feeling great and I wanted to be able to see it again. Seems like it's ready to peel, no scabbing and no tenderness whatsoever. This has been my easiest heal ever (including two tiny ones with just really thin linework). Definitely not what I expected, but I don't mind lol. Sorry for the crap pic, and the 'derm wrinkles! Tattoo is just under three days old.

  15. Chris Marchetto. I don't have any pictures. I just think that his attitude towards tattooing is one of the best that I have seen in the short while that I've been studying tattoos. He's not into being pretentious, or whether or not he knows so and so. He's a human who happens to tattoo.

  20. I like that this thread was bummed. It made me think about how awesome Adam Hathorn's aka "Honkey Kong" tattoos are. A nice mixture of traditional and new skool. But, I suppose he probably doesn't need any "recognition."
