Hopefully finishing up my Jondix/Chad collabo back piece next Wednesday 10/19. Appointment with Chad at State of Grace! haven't been tattooed there since 2010, so i'm excited to feel that vibe again. Dreading more pain on the back, but hopeful it's the last time!

  3. Portland tattoo expo was in town this week. As always, it's my favorite time of the year. I have always had work done there and this weekend was no different. I am working on a American traditional piece. Got to meet Corey Miller. He was not tattooing, but had a good conversation with him. Cool dude. Been a fan of his long before he was on LA Ink. Here's my piece. A clipper with a rose. Be good friends Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Here is tattooed skin from the 19th century, it belonged to a french soldier (hundreds of skins like this were preserved). The Top depicts images of a nautical star, a lady head, and 'D’amour' in script; which means 'my love.'

  5. My advice is to Print 10 of your favorites and walk into a few local shops, pitch what you want with your 10 references pieces from Peter Madsen and they will either be into it and take on your commission or not. Beware, though, not every tattooer is honest enough with himself to refuse a project because it is beyond his current technical or artistic skill set. So ask to see if they have done anything like it or not, if you are the test subject then keep that in mind and don't have your expectations too high as somebody works their personal learning curve into your skin. You might spark someone's imagination into being the next big thing in a style or you might be walking in as wallet only, so beware. Peter Madsen has a unique aesthetic blend of a lot of influences, so don't expect someone to emulate his thing easily, If Peter Madsen is your man then make it happen, if you just like his thing, then someone else might suffice for now, with enough flavor to do the trick, just do not have the unrealistic expectation to have some random dude or gal be able to manifest something genuine that Peter Madsen has been working on as an artist his whole life, keep in mind an artist's expression is an accumulation of their personal influences and aesthetic filter, their them filter (as it were), so it is deeply unique to them. If you do not feel comfortable or confident with your local experience, then make your way to a Tattoo Convention with a wallet full of money and your ideas and reference and you will be sure to find something you like and get. There is enough Tattoo Conventions these days that one has to be within range, otherwise, deal with the local reality, or better yet save money to travel for your favorite Artist, I am sure they would appreciate the effort and it would be reflected in your collective ink. It is noteworthy that a tattoo takes two people, the artist / applicator, and the receiver / canvas it is a cooperation between these two and more human than any other art out there. Each influences the other, and the outcome is a reflection of their cooperation, and meeting of the minds and bodies. So pick your partner wisely, it is well worth the effort.

2nd session on my Mandala half sleeve by Daniel Meyer https://www.instagram.com/dasleitbild/ was pushed back a month, to November 10th! Started it in the beginning of September. A little bummed on waiting, but its only a month. and i'll have better time to heal on the 10th with only one day back at work, before the weekend to rest.

  8. @66pens87 absolutely wouldnt worry about those lines at all - way too many people hyperfocus on details like that instead of the impact of the image and how it hits you in the gut

  9. From 19:th of september, by TomasTomas at Into You. That was a beautiful and special day. Maybe 2 hours of tattooing and in total 8 hours with all the talking, planning design, preparing, listening to music, watching videos, sharing stories and experience. Tomas is fantastic.

    THE WALL stories...

Did not see this topic anywhere else, so here it goes. The wall, to me is that phycological line you can cross where it is best to tap out of the Tattoo session, because you are out of the stuff it takes to continue, (out of gas so to speak) your endorphins are gone, your exhausted, hungry, tired, cranky, wondering what it is all about...that point is what I am talking about. Once crossed... you cannot get back to your happy place... If you keep going, you need to stop every 10 seconds, everyone is annoying everyone else and it becomes unproductive for everybody. No matter how tough you are, everyone hits the wall at some point, if you are getting big work, some even with small work. As I said in another thread "If tattooing becomes painless someday, you will see a divide where it will be a qualifier if you had a painless tattoo or not because at this time and in conceivable history, pain has been part of the deal. Looking at a 10,000-year-old mummy's tattoo, you can think to yourself, shit that had to hurt... you get tattoo creds based upon the size and placement of the art, whether consciously or not by other tattooed people, it is part and parcel in the experience." I had a 9 hour long session on my arm and hit 'the wall'. First, 5 hours fine, stopped for lunch, got back at it, went another 3 hours, then I had to stop and throw up in the bathroom, lunch gone, kept going for 30 minutes stopped (arghhh..), going again then stopped after 5 minutes, then another 5 minutes and called it. At this point, you could have touched my non-tattooed arm and my mind would have thought it hurt and I can't take it anymore, ...or my toe for that matter. That's it, out of gas....till next time. I think we all can have this genuine experience, I have seen it countless times in others and it is nothing to be embarrassed about, though it is embarrassing anyway, it just happens. Tough as nails for hours, then all of a sudden not. Dang!. Then there are the obvious fakers who think they get bonus points for making a big deal about everything, that is not the topic. Please share your 'The Wall' stories, if you have had long sessions, you know what I mean.

You shouldn't have changed it. I was just pointing out that those tattoos, and skin for that matter, are no longer his. I used to think it was pretty cool to have tattoos preserved for generations to admire and still think it's kinda cool to be able to see it but it's the one thing you CAN take with you to the grave. I can't imagine i would ever consent to it. Anyway, not trying to be grammar police. I was just trying to be funny. @Ducky15568

  13. I would recommend compiling a group of tattoo imagery you like, then go and visit various shops/ artists to check out their portfolio. Once you find an artist (or several) that does the style you are looking for, you can speak with them and see what they can create for you. Spit ball ideas with them, listen to the artist, and enjoy the journey.

    Swollen forearm sleeve

totally normal,I have tattoos all over my body, except my hands, and I have never swelled up on any tattoo, but recently I had my hands done and they both swelled up like crazy,no the swelling didn't hurt, and it went down in 4 or 5 days. here is my hand, swollen a day after, and then a month after and it's normal. and I started getting bruising in certain spots from getting tattooed that never happened to me before, but it went away , it should be ok,keep it elevated,or maybe ice it up a little,or try an OTC anti-inflammatory like advil or motrin(ibuprofen) or aleve(naproxen),keep it out of the sun.

@JasonTO I wouldn't worry about it at all. Tattooing is cyclical and even if that is the first time you have seen or come across that type of placement for that idea I assure you that it has been done before many times over. The challenge here is for the artist to take the same idea/placement and make it fresh and new without utilizing or biting off of the work that he has done on previous clients. In all honesty it's what makes tattoos so special. You can come across the same idea and even placement of a tattoo on a person and it will still be 100% different and unique.

    Small tattoo ideas?

I would definitely agree that you should wait. First, let the 5 tattoos that you've gotten in the last 3 or 4 weeks heal. Second, take the time now to think about your long-term concept of what you want it all to look like when you're done. Do you have an idea for a unifying concept (as you did for the last 4)? Are you looking to stick with American Traditional? Are you, perhaps, interested in creating a unified look that might ultimately include sleeves or a back or chest piece? Just placing a random filler tattoo now might ultimately prevent you from a more completed look later and seems rash to me at this point. Given your reactions to the first 5, wait! Plan. Research. Discuss. IMHO, you are just leading yourself down the path of ultimate disappointment.

If this was the artist you have most of your work from I'd say stop asking us and ask him/her. Say you admired the tattoo and placement and wondered about getting something similar.

  28. i was stuck on who i wanted to do my back for the longest time, but it all came together last year... seeing @ironchef's collabo put the light bulb above my head, then seeing instagram pics of jondix and chad traveling together in Nepal illuminated it. they're both the best dudes and i thought their friendship, mindset, and contrasting styles would make for an interesting collaboration. i knew they both frequently attended the SOG/SFO convention in Oct., so i sent 'em an email with the thought as soon as it hit me in April. lucky for me, they were both super into it! we bounced a few emails back and forth and they ended up drawing on a Philippine eagle on top of frontal skull in Chad's hotel room at 12:30am, after the first night of the convention. most of you can probably guess who did what. (photo taken by @ian) it was great to experience the magic happening right behind me... although i couldn't see what was going on, i could feel it and hear it. i've had individual artists draw on tattoos and an usually artist thinks and does what they do pretty quietly... but when both of them are drawing and thinking together, they have to verbalize those thoughts to each other. i had the pleasure of listening in on these two tattoo geniuses' thoughts as they shared. speaking of tattoo geniuses, another piece of magic happened... just as they were finishing up the drawing, Mike Wilson and a few other folks visited the room. Chad happened to be a little stuck on how to position a wing, so Mike chimed in with a perfect suggestion, getting in on the collabo! after that, i basically had to sit tight for 35-45 minutes while they attacked me and lined whole the damned thing. there was some artistic and technical discussion during the tattoo, but there was one last piece of collaboration to be done... i had originally requested to incorporate one of the symbols from Jondix's 108 Marks book. this was to be the last thing they were going to tattoo, but instead of going with the symbol i requested, they decided to collaborate and create a whole new symbol. they took turns drawing a piece of it and passing the sharpie back and forth to each other. when they were happy with it, Chad made it permanent. i've since had one more session with Chad out in Napa. Jondix won't be making it to the SFO this year, so he's trying to convince me to get out to Barcelona or London, but funds, the wife, and work schedule are iffy. i can't wait to see it come together, but i'm patient enough to wait for things to align. i'm waiting for the artists to share pics before i do.
