  2. The spot you circled hurts -- but you'll get through it. The good news is that it's one of those areas where one area might be a 9/10 but then just an inch to the right or left it is a manageable 4/10. To me the worst part about being tattooed in that area wasn't the needle -- it was the constant wiping of the paper towel. After awhile, it was like sandpaper and the whole area felt like a mild burn. Just depends how long your artist spends in the area.

  3. End of Day three and while the tattoo is really healing well - damn am I bruised in the ditch. All the work still hurts in the shower. Putting on a shirt today was no treat (I work from home so this was first time). And yet I'm close enough to finishing this that I'm already planning the next big one.

  4. The pain will be intense! 10/10 extreme! You may pass out! You may die! Tattoos hurt. Tons of people, my mom included have them. Get a cool tattoo and post a picture here after. Pain is pain, who cares.

  5. well nothing to do really but wait until it heals then you'll know what you're dealing with i definetly think you have some blowout going on not the end of the world but it might be a factor to consider as you decide where this piece is headed once it heals

  6. Mediocre Japanese style. It should be said that good Japanese style tattoos are meant to be bold clear and readable from a distance which is the opposite of this. The problem here is a lack of contrast. Color would have helped Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Pain level on wrist

I had my inner wrist done (about 3" x 3" dragonfly with script above) and it wasn't nearly as painful as I thought it would be. Ankle was much worse. Good luck.

    Tattoo Community?

@polliwog - I love going to conventions for the same reason that I like LST: Even though there may be some who are there just to gawk, by and large people there (or here) “get it.” When I went to my first convention, it helped me realize that it’s ok to be tattooed. Even though I had seen pictures of heavily tattooed people before, I had never seen a person with a sleeve or back piece live and in the flesh. It may sound stupid and (I’m sorry) was exactly the kind of stereotyping that we fight here, but even though I was fascinated with the idea of having extensive tattoo coverage, I imagined that heavily tattooed people were some weird subculture leading bizarre isolated lives. At my first convention I talked to heavily tattooed people for the first time and saw that they were just people, like me. Duh… They were nice, helpful and encouraged me to go for it. That really helped me turn the corner on my tattoo interests, and not feel so weird about wanting to be heavily tattooed. Yeah. Tattooing is outside most people's range of understanding. I keep imagining a conversation that I might have with some of my friends: (excitedly) "I'm starting my back piece next week!" "Back piece?" "It's a tattoo" "You're getting a tattoo?????" "Uh, Yes." "Where on your back? Like on your shoulder blade?" "Well, it will cover my whole back." "A tattoo covering your whole back????? Seriously????" And the conversation spirals into the abyss from there.

  16. I was *so worried* about how I would handle the pain for my first tattoo. Just try to calm yourself down enough to eat a meal beforehand, and you'll be able to handle it. If you're one of those people who gets queasy from nerves, soft ginger candies might help with that.

  17. Does anyone know if there's usually Saniderm for sale? It's my preferred way of healing and I was too lazy to order more in time for the convention. Any brand of adhesive derm is fine.

  18. Yikes. Do some research. You want it to be readable.

  19. There's no hard set rule. Some shops say theyre a street shop, others a custom shop, but most will do either. Some shops (typically very renown shops) only do appointments, so they wouldnt really be a "street shop", but the titles dont hold much significance now a days. Back in the 60s and 70s during the tattoo "reconnaissance" fronted by Ed Hardy, a shop would advertise that they did custom work, which was in refference to shops that only had premade designs, so it was a big deal to get a custom made design. Now a days most shops do custom work as well as flash so the titles dont hold much meaning anymore.

  20. so you're looking to get tattooed and the main criteria you're concerned with is that it should have poor readability uh - i call that style 'bad tattoo'

  21. Man, the chest is no joke! There were spots near the collarbone where I could've sworn my throat was getting tattooed... Arm's looking great! Happy to watch all of this progress.

  22. Totally spontaneous addition today. Had the day off so I stopped into Royal Tiger in Austin to drool over BHR's new flash sheets. Bailey was there with nothing to do sooooo about two hours later, I walked out with this beauty.

  23. I know! I looked at the most painful part of my arm and said "I will never have to tattoo there again!" A couple painul spots on the chest left, but otherwise it should be relatively smooth sailing here on out.

  24. So I wasn't expecting another large scale piece. But Steve Byrne loved my basic idea, and I DID specifically tell him, apparently, quote "go nuts". I am a wreck this morning kids. Link to video:

  25. Update: Aug 31. Scott Ellis is finally back in the US, so we put in five more hours dropping color into the dragon. I am so relieved to have the ditch of my arm done! That was probably the worst part.

  27. My boyfriend and I are hoping to drive up at least one of the days from VT! Haven't booked with anyone yet, as I am waiting until my BF definitely has his passport (hate that they changed that law haha). But I keep seeing Jim Sylvia has time still... so tempting... Anywho, if we do make it, would love to meet up with folks!

  28. Flying in from New Brunswick for this one! Basically hopping a plane after work on Saturday afternoon, spending a night and flying back after the con is over. Already booked a hannya on my arm from Dave Cummings, waiting on an email from Stace Forand for an oni on my knee, and hopefully a banger from Lucas Ford or Ryan Halter if I have time left. Going to try and grab some japanese refference from Gomineko as well.

  29. So my first tattoo is on my right upper arm. Would it be better to add my second and third tattoos on the same arm, or would it be better to do them on my other (left) upper arm? Thanks

  30. Friends are (insert appropriate word/phrase here such as God's, Buddah's, Life's, etc) way of apologizing for your family. @Gingerninja - you totally rock it. I love your confidence and your perspective. I'm not sure if I have mentioned this anywhere before - and I do so now only for perspective - but I was very close to the point of impact of the plane that hit the Pentagon on 9/11. Several times that day I stared death in the eyes and won. Any time you can find yourself included in a Smithsonian Museum exhibition...and be alive to see it...is a positive outcome. That experience, and other close calls I had while in the Army, gave me a totally new perspective on life, on my priorities and on my approach to others. I don't let others control me - but I also am more attune to other points of view. I may not agree, but I am much more tolerant and open to considering those viewpoints. I can't make everyone happy...but I CAN make myself happy. Life is about choices - we make them every day. Not all are right or good but as long as we are willing to accept the consequences of those choices then, it seems to me, that it is a correct way to go.

@JBluewind the clef heart is a lot more interesting than a generic treble clef. But it is a very common clip art tattoo and a really static design. I would reconsider the placement of such and not be too hasty. Red Red Robbin you say...ever consider that?

@JBluewind Are these tattoos you've seen in real life or in pictures on the Internet? I did a google image search on "ear tattoos" and nothing that came up is what I would consider good tattooing. From what I've seen in real life, if you're going to tattoo the inside of the ear you're best sticking with bold and heavy blackwork/tribal. And if you're going to do that you have to be pretty much fully covered unless you want to look completely ridiculous. All those delicate flowers and other complicated and intricate designs are not going to hold up to the kind of sun exposure that your ears will get. Don't get me started on how many obvious photoshop jobs show up when you do that search either. if you want something to memorialize somebody who you loved and who meant a lot to you, you owe it to her memory to get something nice that is going to last a lifetime.

My full ass is tattooed and it definately ain't a secret anymore. Since my 7yo nephew saw the 'great wave' splashing out of my plumber's crack all he does is ask "Uncle Eric why do you have a butt tattoo?" and then all the kids laugh because he said "butt" haha.

I do like the idea of a future behind the ear tattoo though for myself, like silver dollar sized. Tattooing in/on the ear though makes as much sense as writing "serenity" or some shit on the sides of your finger. Why? To be edgy? It will look silly unless you have a lot of other tattoos going on. That's where the put ID tattoos on animals. A tattoo on the head will still show through when the hair grows in. You may not be able to fully make out the tattoo once the hair grows in, but there will be something fuzzy showing which will draw more attention to it and people will be curious and ask you. If you want a secret tattoo, make a proper tattoo on the torso or the thighs and keep it concealed by wearing clothes. If you are worried about going to the beach or pool and people seeing your tattoo...well, maybe tattoo is not for you. It's not for everyone. Don't be a tat-tourist.

I don't understand the idea of a "secret tattoo" on your head. A full bodysuit is literally more concealable.
