i went from doing my best not to book anything since my last appointment on February 1st. Welp, Mark Mahoney is coming to Jersey and I couldn't pass that up. Also, I inquired for a 2nd tattoo with Garver and was proposed to take over a possible cancellation. All within 10 days, so much for having no more debt lol. /positive rant

Not making a very strong case for yourself on here, friendo. As for the tattoo, personally, I think words are lame. Pictures are symbols and they speak to people. Adding a "meaningful" quote to it just sucks all the mystery and flavour out from it. Its like getting a tattoo of a sick dragon and stamping a big "LUCKY" ontop of it. Also, every person I know who has gotten "kid font" tattoos or "my child's hand writting" tattoos have regretted it, and it just looks awful. The tattoo design itself should never take back seat to the "meaning". Keep that in mind. And dont get it upside down.

  6. Just find a tattooer who does good japanese work and get them to come up with the design for you. Adding a middle man just complicates things, and frankly, the design that artist did for you for free (which I dont understand why they would) is mediocre at best. As for my opinion on the concept its kind of just lame. It seems like a desperate attempt to be "original". There are so many great classic Japanese designs, I dont see why youd want to add a dull celtic theme to it. Personally Id suggest a hannya or namakubi. They fit well as upper arm pieces, and have great stories behind them. Thats just me tho. Ive never liked the celtic/viking/norse stuff. They seem trite. I also dont think a "1/4 sleeve" is a thing. Thats just a shoulder tattoo.

  7. I got my nipples pierced as a 50th birthday present to myself (I’m a guy). It was actually related to my tattoo experience in an odd way. I was trying to decide if I wanted to get heavily tattooed, and part of that debate was wondering what it would be like living with a tattoo, changing my body, having something unusual on it that was covered, but where there was still the possibility of having it noticed. Piercing intrigued me similar to tattoos because it involved changing the body permanently (well, semi permanently). So I got the idea that getting my nipples pierced could be a “test run” for getting a large tattoo. I figured that if I was uncomfortable living with the piercings, then I probably was going to be uncomfortable living with a huge tattoo. And I could take the piercings out, with no harm done, and get on with life. So I did it, and it actually helped me finally decide to get a back piece and sleeves. I liked knowing the piercings were there, that I had a special secret, and that I had stepped out of the box. It was also like crossing a threshold into the world of changing my body. Once I got the piercings, it seemed like it was a smaller and easier step to decide to get a big tattoo. I sort of felt like I had started on a path that I had to follow.

Also, it shouldn't be where you can read it—that's upside down (as someone else said). You'll cover this up eventually if you decide to do it. It really doesn't look right next to your atom.

Bless your heart. Just noticed that you started four threads here and four threads on another tattoo board. I have a job where I'm in front of computer all day. You see, we all have different kinds of jobs. NEAT!

  12. You're not going to get a more favourable response by reposting the same thing. I think you got what you paid for with the design. If you want Japanese, even with non-Japanese elements like you want, at the very least go to somebody who understands and has experience with Japanese tattoos, because it looks really bad if you get it wrong.

You're approaching this all wrong. Instead of asking what's the minimum you can do to have an acceptable tattoo, maybe think about asking what you can do to get the best possible tattoo. Either way, it's on you for life, so you might as well go for the good option.

  17. I've never been tattooed by him but a friend of mine has. He does good realistic and his shop is pretty well respected in Toronto. The other shop I've heard talked about in TO for realism is The Black Pearl on The Danforth. If you are looking for cool black and grey check out Jennifer at the Pearl https://www.instagram.com/jenniferlawes/ or Alex Snelgrove at the Okey Doke https://www.instagram.com/snelgrove/ she not currently taking new work but her books will open up in a few months.

Here is an example of what everyone was attempting to convey. With the font thin like that, it would take away from the tattoo as a whole. Get a tattoo that looks like a tattoo, I remember someone saying that once.

  22. I'm not sure I'd want to mix in Celtic with Japanese. It just doesn't make a ton of sense. Graeme is right though. Best to go to an artist who does solid Japanese work and have them design something for you, perhaps based on what you are showing us here, but more appropriate for the style.

  23. if I can,and it wasn't drawn directly me,I always ask for the original art and stencil and I ask them to sign the art,Alycia did for me. :) I have gotten the art from several artists in the past. I like to frame them for my office.

  24. If you're going to get a different design from a different artist why are you showing us this? If you go to a good artist you'll get a good tattoo. If you go to a dogshit artist you'll get a dogshit tattoo. Concept doesn't matter. Simple as.

  31. It's an allergic reaction to the adhesive, I've had many problems with saniderm and tattooderm. So I switched to this stuff, zero problems or complaints and I have used it on every size tattoo for nearly a year now. Here''s the link to the amazon store I buy it from. I also find it MUCH easier to handle. Smith & Nephew 5466000041 Opsite Flexifix 4 Inch x 11 Yards Transparent Film Dressing https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001SIQCRI/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_gskVxbFX7NEA6

    Full body suit people?

Great thread bump. I'm slowly chipping away at the blank spots, but they still greatly outnumber the inked ones. I consider my torso and one arm to be "finished". Mainly working upper legs now. I'll say that once I've gone all the way around as well as doing my back, I'd be willing to start throwing around the term suit in progress. I think that you have to have some pretty serious coverage before you get to that point though. Maybe we can adopt some wet-suit style names to best describe our progress. Long John for everything but sleeves... I'm working towards a Springsuit with long sleeves myself. http://www.surfing-waves.com/equipment/wetsuit-types.htm

    Full body suit people?

i think this is a fair question and I suppose you can call it whatever you want ! full backpiece describes your goals. if you are extending from the chest down the front torso/sides than i think claiming bodysuit is fair. but...my $0.02 you see it a lot on instagram now a days - like fresh sleeves and an empty torso claiming #bodysuit or bodysuit-in-progress. it's pretty lame. it's just a tattoo (and an unfinished one at that). it either is or it isn't. those that feel the need to go around and tell everyone and #describe how tatted up they are...probably aren't. the whole thing and magnitude became very real to me when I went to a tattoo convention and stripped down in public next to checkerboard man to get a photo. the reality set in on where i was at with my years of steady progress. before that moment it was just A LOT of tattoo. and it still is ! that a bodysuit isn't a trivial thing - many people have many tattoo, but there are very few who have and will succeed going the full distance. it is not an undertaking to be taken lightly. and there is no finish line to my tattoo suit, it is and will be ever evolving and will be finished the day I die. it requires a lot of time, money, patience and dedication to complete any larger tattoo, not just a bodysuit. good luck with your plans

    Tattoos and Piercings?

It's strange because I don't find my piercings to be high maintenance at all, even during the healing process. And I like pretty jewelry so it just gives me more places to put it. :)
