Haven't posted in quite a while so i'll update you all on a couple of new(ish) additions. First up is from the Bristol tattoo convention in June, done by Stewart Robson: And this one i got a couple of days ago from Marcos Attwood at Broad Street Studio, in Bath Not particularly great photos of either one but i'm sure you get the idea7 points -
Design/Concept Opinions please

I'm not sure I'd want to mix in Celtic with Japanese. It just doesn't make a ton of sense. Graeme is right though. Best to go to an artist who does solid Japanese work and have them design something for you, perhaps based on what you are showing us here, but more appropriate for the style.4 points -
You're not going to get a more favourable response by reposting the same thing. I think you got what you paid for with the design. If you want Japanese, even with non-Japanese elements like you want, at the very least go to somebody who understands and has experience with Japanese tattoos, because it looks really bad if you get it wrong.4 points

You're approaching this all wrong. Instead of asking what's the minimum you can do to have an acceptable tattoo, maybe think about asking what you can do to get the best possible tattoo. Either way, it's on you for life, so you might as well go for the good option.3 points

ya I know,it's in 2 threads, but I love this one I got from Alycia Harr at Classic Tattoo in Grass valley today. It was an early birthday present from my wife.3 points -
If you're going to get a different design from a different artist why are you showing us this? If you go to a good artist you'll get a good tattoo. If you go to a dogshit artist you'll get a dogshit tattoo. Concept doesn't matter. Simple as.2 points

Wouldn't it be more effective to create an image that calls to mind "we are all star stuff" vs an upside down phrase? Doesn't the atom imply that we are "star stuff"? Lettering in tattoos does not necessarily age well... I'm talking aging 10-20-30 years down the line not 3-5 years down.2 points

@ligatortat i like the tattoo - i'd say no on the text for many reasons but primarily because to go to a size that would be sufficient to add to this piece would leave the text overshadowing the image - a big no-no imo and for gods sake - if you forgo this advice and do get text - please not upside down (so its for you) i think if you have the itch for more ink - get another tattoo1 point -

Looks to be pretty decent. My concern might be that the background is pretty close to the same tone as the bottom of the bird, so in 10-15 years it might not be too discernable - but with the background only being 2 weeks old, it might lighten up a bit in the next month or two, too.1 point

It's going to be a wild few months, some of my favorites from Europe will be in the bay and I couldn't pass them up. I just booked in with Stizzo and Dan Sinnes, and already had an appointment with Valerie Vargas for the SFO convention. Not sure what I'll get.1 point -

@sighthound- I work for an environmental consulting firm. It is a pretty traditional office environment. Lots of men wear ties, women in business attire. No dress code prohibiting tattoos, and some people do dress casual every day, but I just feel that when I'm at work, I want to project a professional image, without distractions. Others may not feel that way, that's fine. If one of my coworkers wants to display their tattoos, thats fine. Is just my personal rule for me. If I go beyond half sleeves, the coverup issue really changes. That 6” difference between half and 3/4 sleeves means I’d pretty much have wear long sleeves full time for the summer, and I really do not want to do that, especially out in the field on hot summer days. Also, my tattoo life started in my 50s, and is pretty unusual for people my age that are around me. I’m currently tying to get comfortable with showing my tattoos away from work. I really love the way I look with tattoos, and would like to show them sometimes, even though I’m committed to staying covered at work.1 point

THIS!!!!!!! - - - Updated - - - And THIS too!!!!!!! Or dragon sleeve and ho-o sleeve? I didn't ask for it but Horitomo gave me a a double yin yang - ish pair of Monmon cat tattoos on my feet. Each cat sleeping in the opposite direction of ones other with tattooed snakes doing the flip flop swirl. I just wanted a tattoo from him, it was his design choice. Genius! Which also brings up talking about the idea with an artist. They'll do you right.1 point

I deliberately left a 2" x 3" blank in my tattoosuit...for a spider with a yin-yang butt. i fuggin hate spiders, every since that grade 6 science fair where these little bitches traumatized me for life with a taxidermy tarantula. But I digress...I'm sure this concept has been done before and you can copy my sweet idea if you want, but it won't look a fraction as bad ass on your shoulder as it will tucked into the hidden realms of my shaolin suit hehe! My advice...wait...then go the distance with a big ol dragon tattoo. Put the yin-yang in the fireball in the dragon claw...do the dragon big enough such that the claw is the size of a baseball glove and yin yang is the size of a hardball!1 point
