went to Seattle and got crabs by Jake Whitson @ Liberty Tattoo Seattle my lady also got a really nice wrist tattoo from Jake. She liked it so much we went back into downtown on Friday nite and she got a midnite walk-in to get something matching on the opposite wrist. one of the coolest tattoo shops I've been in and really nice folks, great hospitality. can't wait to go back Seattle was an awesome city.

    Canadians, eh?

My brother and I rode our motorcycles from DC to Alaska and back a few weeks ago. We spent a chunk of the time riding across Canada. First of all, the Canadian people are really friendly. I love America, but I'm jealous of that. Second, there wasn't a day that went by that at least one person didn't come up and talk to me about my tattoos. Usually multiple times a day, when we stopped for gas or something to eat. I think my brother (inkless) was starting to get tired of it! Lots of nice people, but I didn't see many people with a lot of tattoos up there, even the people that came up to talk to me. Usually a small tattoo or two. A beautiful country, I encourage everyone to go.

A couple of months ago my girlfriend told me that if I got into the school I applied for, she would get me a chest piece! After months of hard work I found out today that I got accepted for the school! So I guess a chest piece is on it's way!

    Hello

@rose094 Hello and welcome! My guess is that it would depend state to state or shop by shop. I've seen it while hanging out at a shop where I live, where a minor (I think 16 or 17?) was tattooed by a quality artist at a quality shop with her mother there with her even though they were here on holidays so residence wasn't an issue. Tattoos aren't regulated at all here so I don't know how much of a factor that is, but it's in principle possible. Check with the shop you want to get tattooed at. Good luck.

  8. -I'm sorry there's friction in your life with your family over something you love. It's interesting...there seems to be a very visceral reaction in some parents with regard to the physical bodies of their children, and it has seemed to me at times that it can't always be explained by generational differences. My mother is just about as supportive as any parent can be of their child's tendency to explore fringe cultures; as long as I'm not hurting myself or anyone else, she's pretty much fine with whatever. And though she's always positive with the things she says about my tattoos, a few things she has said have led me to wonder if she didn't have some kind of emotional investment in my personal appearance re: inherited characteristics, or something. I remember telling her early on that my tattooer told me I have good skin for tattooing, and she made some offhand comment about how she hopes I appreciate that she gave it to me, which struck me as weird at the time -- obviously I am grateful that she gave me my skin! Haha. And grateful for everything else she's given me, too. Maybe some parents can sense that the act of tattooing can be a radical act of self-ideation on the part of their children, and they feel weirded out and threatened by it, as though we're setting out to become different people all of a sudden, and they're afraid of losing the one they've spent so long loving. I don't know. I don't have kids and I can't really say. (In addition to all of the other reasons that parents can object, obviously.)

Planning on going to Brightside later this week for "Flash Friday." Coincidentally, like the Dan who posted above me, my name is also Dan, and I will likely also be getting a tiger head. Not on the hand though. The sheet of flash they're using has a few cool designs though, so we'll see come Friday what I end up going with.

  13. Thanks for the kind words! My brother is a more than a piece of work @oboogie. Our families never make it easy on us when they don't approve of the choices we make. You can choose your friends but not your family, right? My brother can pound dirt. My mom, I'll love to the end of her days regardless of her perspective. I would assert that having tattoo's have made me more empathic, kind and tolerant. Lessons a lot of people could use. I can't control them but I can control me.

  14. @Morrigan its all good - only your mother has any control over her emotional state and perspectives - I'm 45 and my father doesnt like my tattoos - though he wont say as much to me - you gotta live your life and do what works for you - partly i think there is a generational issue at play - if it was me - i'd be straight forward - 'mom i love you and you dont have to love my tattoos but your frustrations with what i do with body wont have any influence on what i will continue to do with my body' - end of story

  15. I think for most people this won't look like much has been done, but oh well! All of the black/shading, with the exception of some clouds we're going to add, is now done. All of the lining, too. We had to line two more dragon feet and I thought I was going to die. If I never see another liner that size again, it'll be too soon! So now we get to start color after this, and I can't wait. Greg Whitehead and all that.

    Hello

I believe @Graeme is right. I used to live in Florida and you can get tattooed there with parent / guardian consent as a minor. Tons of tourists do this all the time and no one ever seemed to mind that they were from out of state. Sorry to read about your sister. Good luck with your tattoo.

  17. Sounds like fun, @sophistre! I also had some serious bug that eventually landed me in the hospital with a drip a few days after getting my much smaller forearm tattoo, but I can't imagine how uncomfortable it must be with a huge one like yours. Hope you'll feel better soon and the tattoo doesn't mind the soaking.

  18. Peeling full back/upper legs tattoo + norovirus = most uncomfortable, sore, itchy bed rest ever. There comes a point when you're sick when you have to acknowledge that, even though you have a tattoo in the final stages of peeling...you really need to take a hot bath. A few hot baths. Multiple hot baths, so that you don't die of body aches. I regret nothing. (And the tattoo seems fine.)

  19. This is so true. Couldn't agree more. I managed to calm down over the past couple of days and mother and I are talking normally now. I understand she's under much stress, having some health issues now and I do my best to support her. Looking back at our conversation over the new tattoo, I told her several times that I do understand and respect her opinion and we could have just closed the conversation there, but she kept repeating that she will die soon and that perhaps I can wait with further tattoos for when she's dead. This, for me, was a very low blow and I can't forget for now. Anyway - I do love my tattoos and definitely will get some more. While I'm really sorry for not being able to share this part of my life with my mother, she's not going to see any of these new tattoos.

    Hey there

@oboogie, I have been wearing really low cut shoes (basically only covers my toes and heel and are cut away at the sides) for work and flip flops when out of work :) I used Tegaderm too which helped immensely. It is at the flake stage now and can't wait to see it when its healed and settled.

    Hello

I doubt you'd need to be a resident but that's a question for the shop where you're getting tattooed. You will need to provide a valid ID like a drivers license and you will probably need the parent to be there with you to grant consent. A note won't cut it or every 16 year old who wants a tattoo would just forge a note from home. The real question is what are you getting and from what artist? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Sup dudes/dudettes, I've been getting tattooed for 15 years in Philadelphia and just went to my first convention last year. Collected works from Eric Perfect, Mike Hooligan, Scott Bakoss, Eddie Kes, The Gus, Mike Fite, Mario Desa, Han Shinko and I just booked an appt with Chad Koeplinger at Pagoda City Fest and am really excited. Praise Jah I still have both forearms entirely clear. I referred my little brother up to Smith Street, he really hit it off with Bert and got a lot of work that I'm pretty jealous of. Spent countless hours at Kadillac Deuce Tattoo and Olde City Tattoo but getting tattooed at Great Lakes Tattoo on vacation was a treat. Not sure how this website works, I'm just trying to keep my eyes peeled for people guesting on the east coast and shops I should check out.

  26. I take a long-sleeved shirt, lip balm, and a beverage to keep me hydrated.

  27. I usually just bring water and/or Gatorade, gum (except for when I told an artist I was going to Chad Koeplinger next and he warned me not to bring gum because it's a pet peeve of Chad's), and a jacket. The jacket is usually balled up and used as a pillow to try to get as comfy as possible for any tattoos I think I might need to lay down for. For longer sessions, I gorge on snacks on the drive up (Slim Jims and candy mostly) since eating during a tattoo kind of breaks my concentration and I usually don't want to take long enough breaks to eat anything.

I don't think we're going to save every single person who sees this board from what we perceive to be a bad idea. People who want simple walk-in or street shop tattoos can still get a tattoo that is more or less well done, even if it's an infinity symbol or a phrase that we might think is dumb. For that matter, I'm going to guess that plenty of tattooers who have posted here have spent many hours making tattoos like this one at various points in their careers. And learning from it.

  31. Tell her that you love her and hug her when you can. Oh, and maybe not post any more photos. :) Side note: None of my family approves of my ink. When my brother gets mad at me he calls me a "tattooed white trash whore". I, too, have multiple degrees and a great job. My strategy is to kill them with kindness. You most likely can't/won't change her mind but don't let that impact you being an awesome, loving daughter.

  32. My parents don't like my tattoos, either, and my Mom (whom I love and adore completely) actually called me the other day after perusing my Instagram and seeing one of my new tattoos. I'm older than you are, @Morrigan, have multiple degrees, have a great job, and she was still critical of my tattoos and "disappointed" I'd gotten another one. I've lost count of how many I have, and I keep thinking she'll get used to the idea —apparently not. Just try not to worry and keep doing your own thing. She'll get over it (or at least get used to it).

  33. Who better than Chris Garver to fill a crucial spot on my forearm? I requested his rendition of a phoenix inspired by a line drawing in Ed Hardy's latest book, "Drawings for Tattoos." Aside from that, I told him to do it however he wants. I guess he wanted to make it perfect and pink. "Well... it's more of a coral." Either way, I'm digging it and I feel much more complete!

  34. Got this insanely awesome cat head on July 8th at Congress St Tattoo in Portsmouth. Man I love it so much. Was such a great day (and night)!!!! I love Chad. He is the greatest and I'm always bummed when he leaves, but luckily for those of us in NH, he visits quite often. Cant wait to see him and Jason Scott in Montreal.

  36. I'll chime in here, as a rabid fan of the -derm products. I've used them mostly the day AFTER, but last time on a whim I applied it right after the tattoo, before all the plasma leaky stuff had begun, "set it and forget it" style, and it was awesome. There was actually NO plasma at all, no collecting under the film (I have actually had that happen before) and it was much much easier to remove after 4 days when I applied it this way. So basically my entire healing process was no different than a mild sunburn. No real peeling, either. Kinda wild! This was a largish piece on my back and I could not get to it by myself at all, so it was simpler just to have it covered, then leave it be as long as possible. I was actually able to remove the film by myself, which I've never been able to do before. These people really oughtta pay me...
