Hand Tattoos
Paulus and 3 others reacted to Guerillaneedles for a topic
I posted these in the new tattoos thread but here are my hands by Guen Douglas. They hurt like a bitch and I had a shitty heal (they need a few touch ups but neither of us are in a hurry!) really happy I have them done. I've got full coverage on arms and most of legs but not torso - partly because this is where I want my biggest pieces - but to get my hands done was very symbolic of committing myself to tattooing. No going back to teaching for me! Plus I just feel more 'me'. Hard to explain but I reckon someone gets it.4 points -

i'd say NO, there's just as much hair post-tattoo. it's just visually less noticeable against a backdrop of black and coloured ink.2 points

I'd second all that, and definitely wait, and also, @Kurgana, you are right - it seems like you want to "fix up" the area of the tattoo more than the plain skin! I guess we'll have to get the guy's opinion about whether tattooed skin is less hairy - when they get their legs and arms done do they have reduced hair growth? I can see from an anatomical standpoint that it could affect the hair follicle, causing it to go on strike, as it were, but I do see chaps with hairy arms and tattoos, so not sure if that is something that might wear off over time. Great question!! P.S. My own leg hair is starting to grow less now that I'm older but I do have hair growing on my tattooed legs, and peach fuzz on my shoulders, but I would venture to say that the leg hair could possibly be thinner and weaker...2 points

New, chest piece cover up advice
El Dolmago and one other reacted to LizBee for a topic
I think she means that the original tattoo has not been lasered (it has that faded out look of having had laser tx) and the original was done in 2 sessions. Given all that, it is a pretty good candidate for a coverup by a skilled artist. Go around and get some advice in person, and definitely look at a lot of Insta accounts and portfolios that show a talent for coverups. It goes without saying that you'll again be living with the result and you MUST be completely delighted with how it comes out (ideally) so it will be worth any price you have to pay (even if you have to save up for a year or more to afford it). It would also be worth it to travel or wait for just the right artist to come to you via a convention, guest spot at a nearby shop, etc. It will take some homework and investigation, which will take time and effort, and it will be worth it.2 points -

Not sure if it is lighter or not (I always thought mine might be) but I'd definitely avoid waxing, sugaring or dilapitories for at least 6-8 weeks after a tattoo - that skin needs to recover!1 point -

Graeme reacted to El Dolmago for a topic
Actually I'm mistaken - the tattoo is an amalgam of Tutankhamun and Ankhesenamun and his father Akhenaten and Nefertiti - it's either Tut or Akhenaten as the Amarna period was the only one that worshipped Aten (the sun disk). if you look at the original images - even as carvings they are more dynamic1 point -

Great Image, Glennie at the Pearl told me (as she was doing my butterfly-ladyhead that many of those iconic turn-of the century images (like ladyheads) were copied from popular advertisements - your lady head could be from a matchbook cover!1 point -
And his waiting list isn't that long due to his short time in Holland, it's growing fast though...1 point

It's nice to see this thread get bumped again after a time. I'm glad that Bill Baker interview is getting around. Truly an unsung hero. I'd love to get tattooed by him but I don't think it's easy. I posted a link above a while back about Joe Prokopowitz who was one of the first tattooers in this area of southern Ontario. I met a man in a local sub shop the other day with some old tattoos. He was a friendly fella and we fell into a quick and easy, but all too brief, chat. I knew even before I asked that his work was done by Joe. It had the look. Sure enough, he said " You're too young to remember Old Joe" To ask random strangers to take pictures of their tattoos is kinda beyond my introverted comfort level but, I really would like to make a record of Joe's work that I see because it's becoming more rare by the day. This gentleman would have been game. I'm gonna work on that. Here's a page on IG that features work by current Canadian artists. https://www.instagram.com/great_white_north_tattoos/1 point

I wouldn't feel comfortable waxing until more like 2 or 3 months into the healing. Shaving I think you're fine with once the scabbing and peeling goes away. Obviously you're not going to pull ink out or anything with waxing, but I tend to have long periods of light peeling or wrinkly looking "new skin" once my tattoo is done healing, so I would just want to wait until my skin was back to normal to not disturb the area any more. Waxing is traumatic enough on your skin without factoring in a healing wound. Maybe I'm overly cautious. Here's another question related to shaving and tattoos: does anyone know if there's any truth to the myth of tattooing slowing/stopping hair growth? It could be my imagination, but it does seem like my tattooed leg gets less hairy than my untattooed leg, maybe just because the hair blends in with the tattoo so I don't notice it as much. I've heard about people getting their armpits done because of this and the stories about tattooing affecting sweat glands. If any of that is true, I will seriously entertain the notion of getting my armpits done!1 point -
It depends on the specific skin tone, some have cooler undertones and some warmer. Think of your skin as a filter through which the tattoo will be viewed Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk1 point

I guess this is not strictly limited to us girls, but how do those of you with leg tattoos handle hair removal? I've always been a (lazy) shaver because I mainly wear jeans or other long trousers, but since getting my calf tattoo I seem to like wearing skirts more (love seeing the tattoo rather than wanting to show it off), but my skin hates shaving and I hate seeing stubble on my light coloured portrait tattoo's face... According to most sources it seems like waxing should be safe on healed tattoos, so I was thinking to try it. I'm not sure when exactly would the tattoo be considered healed enough for waxing though - I've carefully shaved the tattooed area twice already at ~3 weeks but it's obviously still very fresh... Any ideas of how long I should wait/any other tips for me?1 point

Just wanted to share my experience as it relates to the issue of clothing/bra/healing as has been discussed recently. I was tattooed last week on my back/shoulder, right where the bra strap goes, lol, basically from the top of my shoulder right to where the strap ends, so no getting around it, other than racerback style bras, but I don't have any and didn't feel like fooling with getting one. I used Tegaderm over the site (this time I applied the film much earlier than I usually do and it came off much easier, but that is for another thread!) and I was able to wear my bra just like normal and had NO problems. I just went on about my daily life and business as usual, even though I had added about a 6x5 or so tattoo to my shoulderblade area. It just felt like a moderate sunburn, with the film pulling on my skin somewhat, and that was it. Kind of a set it and forget it type situation, and I'm very pleased. After reading through the thread and beginning to wonder about how I was going to manage my clothing in this area, etc., I decided just to not worry at all about it and that worked out well for me this time, though the Tegaderm made the difference (I sound like I work for them but I don't!), since it protects the new tattoo and makes it much less sensitive, so the bra strap didn't bother it like it would have if I had to rig up some sort of saran wrap or other dressing that would stick and be messy, etc. With this there is no mess at all and you don't do anything but wait for 4 days or so. Now I just need to start saving for more tattoos!1 point -
hey just resurrecting this thread my local watering hole Lucky Strike Tattoo has been documenting some of the Edmonton, AB connection to the Canadian tattoo history. They have some articles written up and posted up on their shop walls along with old photos and flash of Pat Martynuik, Zipp, Roy Johnson, Doc Forbes... Rockin' Roy Johnson of Roy & Sandy's Tattoo on 118 Ave ... Kudos to Sam and the Lucky Strike crew for taking the time to put this together. In the past you've had to go get tattooed and hear the stories to try and piece together the oral history so it's nice to have a story written out, to read and enjoy. Especially cool to see the hometown connection. cheers1 point
