fun spur of the moment tattoo from Jesse Calderon, 2nd year apprentice at Modern Times Tattoo in Spotswood, NJ. Young, talented, determined and super cool tattooer. Was also the first time that I was getting tattooed until 3am. Cross that off the bucket list ;) Fire Ant Attack3 points -

Hello! Getting my first tattoo JUNE 30TH! i need some advice!
bongsau and one other reacted to Synesthesia for a topic
Personally, I would never, ever get this. It's on the forearm, which is a highly visible place and prime real estate for tattoos. I'd rather put an awesome picture in that spot and not sideways lettering, and certainly not that cursive style of lettering. It's hard to read and it isn't going to age well as is because of its size combined with the fact it's in a highly visible spot (sun exposure). My first line of advice is to get a picture of some sort instead of words. They generally age better and they have more "impact" as something recognizable (no strangers squinting at your arm and asking what it says constantly). Is there a scene of the show you like? A motif of some kind you can reference? Someone on it you'd like to get a portrait of? Even if you could pair this quote in a banner with a picture of something would be an improvement, imo. I doubt you'll change your mind so my next line of advice: make everything bigger and make sure it has easy to read composition. You may have to change the placement of it if you aren't comfortable going big, although bigger is always better for tattoos. Like I said, I would never consider something like this, but different types of tattoos appeal to different people. If I had things my way, everyone would get panthers and daggers. If you're dead set on a lettering tattoo, just make sure you change the font and size if only so it doesn't all blur together in a few years.2 points -

I really don't think that font in that size is going to age well. I would go a bit bigger or change fonts. But this is all up to you. Good luck!2 points -

Most of us aren't tattoo artists. If we have a bad day at work, we get a scolding from the boss and go home without any lasting repercussions. When you mess up at work, it's on someone forever. Instead of getting defensive, you need a serious attitude change and to take your craft more seriously. You can't go through your career saying "Boy I really fucked up that guy, oh well, I had a bad day. Next!" Whats your excuse for nearly every other pic in your profile? Because most of them are jacked up.1 point

Your artist being well known doesn't necessarily mean anything. Jon Boy is well known but I wouldn't call him good by any means (https://www.instagram.com/jonboytattoo/). Your artist probably told you that image wouldn't look good because you wanted it upside down. Tattoos should always look upside down to you when you look down at them, it's more aesthetically pleasing. Just for future reference. I don't really understand what the crown is supposed to signify but I agree with the person who said it looked like the Keep Calm and Carry On logo. I think you'll have a lot of people just assuming that's what it means until they start twisting your arm and squinting at it to read it (and they will, people are grabby about lettering tattoos). I think that banner design is better, all the black in the banner makes it a little bolder. But still, I wouldn't get it. Tattoos, imo, should speak for themselves and not have to be so wordy. A cool image will make you feel just as good about yourself as your mantra. That's all just my opinion, sounds like you're pretty set...1 point -
First thought was that the crown makes it look a little like the Keep Calm and Carry On thing that was everywhere a couple years ago. You should consider whether you want your tattoo to evoke that. Other than that, I'm not an artist and it feels weird to give design advice to someone I don't know...1 point

I think this thing's a mess, man. For one thing, your whole deposit situation and him calling you for the rest of the money is really weird and doesn't indicate he's a professional. This guy's lines look shaky and not confident, and exceptionally thin. He has an okay eye for composition, I like how the flowers go into your elbow, although I wonder what he was planning on doing for the empty spot on your inner bicep (background? nothing?). His shading looks amateurish. If you're going for realism, his approach is too bold, if you were going for something more "cartoony," he isn't being bold enough. I'm afraid it'll end up being a really weak tattoo overall if you continue with this guy. I think if you change artists now and have a better guy finish it for you, it could turn out really nice. I think you have the framework for a nice tattoo but someone else needs to take over. Do you have any portfolio pictures from the current artist and the guy you're planning on going to? Do they have Facebook, Instagram, etc? Your arm isn't ruined, it could definitely be a lot worse.1 point -
Only 2 tattoos in, but thighs have been easy pain-wise for me and have healed up great. It does feel like a big wobbling boiled ham strapped to my leg while it heals, though. Bag of peas, keep it elevated. I also wear leggings exclusively while they heal but I hate wearing real pants anyway. My experience will have no bearing on yours, but I do feel that it's helped me to avoid wearing abrasive denim and whatnot. @sophistre the tattoo that @cltattooing did on you looks so great healed, omg1 point

I would like it more with the crown 5-10 times bigger and no text but that's my personal taste. The real question is do you like it. 'Cause you're the one that has to wear it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point -

@BrianH Hats off to you, bud. That looks amazing, you earned it (: @sophistre I love it! So sick! Can't wait to see more And I don't have any recent photos of how mine is coming, unfortunately. I think the closest I can post is this one below. Anyway, did a chunk on the ass on Tuesday and it was pretty crappy. Seems like we're starting to close in on this thing though, just the sides and bottom of the ass, and the thighs left. About 66 hours and 1 year in.1 point -

@sophistre Ohhh wow that healed and settled in so well! So stoked you posted that, thank you! I think that is still one of my favorite tattoos I have done to date, I'm really glad you got that one. Do you mind if I post that one to my IG? and yeah, do agree with the pain being totally individual. I had one of my thighs done for many years, had tattooed it myself in my first year over the course of 7 hours, and found it pretty easy pain-wise. Got the other top of my thigh started by Matt Arriola a couple of weeks ago and it took everything I had to not totally lose it, it hurt really fuckin badly.1 point -

Thigh tattoo questions
PlaceInTheSun reacted to sophistre for a topic
I am by no stretch of the imagination even half as tattooed as most of the people here, but even my personal experience has taught me that all of these things are really individual and there just aren't any rules about it. Examples: The tops of my thighs didn't hurt, really, but the outside, over the IT band, hurt like a sonofabitch. All of them healed REALLY well, though -- no scabbing, not really any pain, and they barely even peeled. Contrarily, most people's complaints about where they've been tattooed on their backs, the worst spots, were not the worst spot for me; mine was in a weird spot between my shoulderblades -- not even the bit in the crease of my butt/thigh could compare with it, and that was no picnic either! My back has also taken a shockingly long time to get to a 'settled' heal state, where the lines aren't super raised, too...it's all just depends on the person. Trying to predict what anybody else is gonna feel seems like a fool's game to me. Plus, some people just do not feel pain like other people do, and that is science fact. Anyway, this thread is about thigh tattoos, so here are mine! I'm including a healed pic of the one that @cltattooing did on me, too, since I don't think I ever sent her one! It's very difficult to take pictures of your own thigh tattoos without warping them.1 point -
sorry folks these photos are too big, don't know how to resize down, i've been having probs linking urls from the 'gram, I've got a little choice spot above the skull. i actually think i might blast over the nonsensical skull. who knows what yet. and here's the wraparound OllieXXX whale in better view:1 point

Palm/Lightning Bolt are 12years old, Turtle is 11, Shark is 7, Octopus is 6 ... :) it's almost time to start thinking about filling in those open spots on the back of the calf. blast in solid bright-ass yellow in the bad brains bolt. maybe a mini-beach scene inside the palm tree. likely going to blast over the red-yellow rising sun. also thinking of getting the turtle redone (by the same tattooer Miles Kanne) in the next few years. I'm keeping the blue water, how Y2K-Canadian of me1 point
