  1. You're wasting your time and your money getting anybody other than the person who is doing the tattoo to draw it. Anything you bring to the artist you choose would have to be completely redrawn to make it work as a tattoo. Better to do your research, find the artist you want to do it, and approach him or her with the idea directly.

  2. My other concern with what you want would be placement. You mentioned left arm or left chest, but your idea incorporates a lot of things and wouldn't look as good if done as a small/medium tattoo. I would consider full back or full chest for a design to incorporate that many elements.

  4. I do hope you know that any decent artist you take these drawings to will rework them and make them more their style. I know my artist's pet peeve is people who bring in drawings by people they know and expect him to just copy it. First of all, he's a better artist than most (with a degree in graphic design), and oftentimes, the photos/drawings people bring in are shit.

Man, I loved James, too! I would have loved for him to win. "Ooooh, Lord have mercy!" Hahaha As for the canvases, if you go on that show and get a shitty tattoo, you have no one to blame but yourself.

  6. I agree. I know I started off with some really bad tattoos and I'm sure I'm not the only one. That is one good thing that came from me spending all of my younger money on booze and drugs is that I did not get more bad tattoos than I did. Then I had kids to raise so when they grew up and i could spend money on myself again I had learned what good tattoos are and can be and now I have some fantastic pieces. I know the person with the tattoos didn't start the thread. And I'm not sure that I see tattoo shaming in any better light than slut shaming (or any shaming for that matter (except Trump shaming, that is totally legit)), but I think any opportunity for tattoo education can help people. I wore some godawful tattoos for over 20 years so if I can be a part of helping someone to not go through that I think that is a good thing.

  10. Welcome. You might find that the best artists aren't going to draw up anything for you without a deposit, so if you're intending to have many of them draw something up, be prepared to shell out. Most don't draw anything up until the day before your actual appointment. I would recommend adjusting your strategy to: a/ continue learning who does the best realism in your area (and I personally can't help you with that) b/ study realism tattoo art and learn what makes any piece stand out over others c/ continue to gather reference material (the one above is pretty fuzzy) d/ get in line and be patient with whatever wait list the excellent and proven artist you end up deciding on has.

That may very well be, but I would much rather try to contribute to a culture here that educates people about good tattoos and gives them the knowledge and resources to get those tattoos than I would just dismiss people because they have shitty tattoos and don't deserve better. If I have nice tattoos it's because people were kind and generous to me when I didn't know a thing, on this forum and in the shops I've been tattooed in, and I would like to pay that forward.

  12. I've been busy recently! First up I got this really cute cat and umbrella from Wendy Pham at Brighton Tattoo convention. I've been after this piece of flash for years so happy he's now mine! Next up (and also at Brighton), I got the side of my knee done by Jody Dawber. This was the most painful tattoo I have ever got. I was whimpering like a baby (and I usually never make a fuss). I had to dig deep to get through it! Thank god she's fast. And last but not least, my latest addition (again on the side of the knee) from my super talented co-worker Lucy O Connell. Had my eye on this babe for well over a year, so happy to finally give her a home.

  13. Hey, all, I'm Jen, and I'm new round here. I've read a lot of posts here, so I thought I'd join in the banter. I am a tattoo collector. 90% of mine are by Joshua Henderson at Brainstorm Tattoo in Fayetteville, Arkansas, who I think is crazy talented. I also have been tattooed by Richard Stell, and I'm getting another from him the Oklahoma Tattoo Convention at the end of this month. I'm a big admirer of Richard and Jennifer Stell, who are two of the coolest people I've had the chance to meet. I've been helping Jennifer with proofreading and updating the tattoo convention website. Good times! I guess I'll post a few of my tattoos in subsequent posts. Thanks for letting me join here, and I hope to become a regular! - - - Updated - - - - - - Updated - - -

I agree with @oboogie I would have voted CRO out before Christian or Anthony. I was kind rooting for that big hillbilly James though. He cracked me up, and at a certain level the show is more about entertainment value than tattoos. I agree that it is a risky thing for artists to go on there but fuck. How desperate for a tattoo would you have to be to volunteer to be a canvas? There have been some really crappy tattoos walk off of that show.

  19. Finding the balance between work, fun, and musical tastes. Thursday night was Reagan Youth. Friday morning in a shirt and tie working in a client office, Friday night a house show with Austin Lucas and Adam Faucett. And today I'm cleaning the apartment listening to rockabilly radio. 16 year old me would be so confused.

  22. kinda got this idea recently that I want to get tattooed in as many states as possible - I guess meeting Chad during his 50 state tour sparked something in me - anyway - I'll be hitting state #4 next week when I go to philly and as far as I can tell - I could hit 11 (counting DC) pretty easily just by car - getting tattooed by tattooers that I like in shops that I want to visit - will I carry through on this? i dont know maybe - I mean part of me says I could just get covered in Rob Ryan tattoos and be completely happy - but I also like a little bit the adventure of traveling and meeting new tattooers and seeing new shops - to be continued i guess

  23. Hello and welcome. Your idea sounds cool, but as an artist myself, I can guarantee your going to piss off a lot of those artists you mention by asking them to draw you an idea that got might not even get tattooed. My advice is to do your research extensively, talk to the artists - you might find some are more keen on your idea. I don't do realism but I've seen the stencils and they're sometimes incomprehensible to anyone but the artist whose using them! I guess what I'm getting at is that if you do your research you'll find someone you trust absolutely to do the job - and you won't need to waste the time of other artists whilst your at it.

I disagree with this sentiment. Those tattoos can be covered up or lasered off, and with the exception of her back, I don't think those would be especially difficult coverups. They're mistakes, they're gross errors in judgement, but starting by getting shitty tattoos doesn't mean that you're stuck getting shitty tattoos forever.

I agree,I liked Christian 's chest piece the best of the 3,they said it had blowouts, but we couldn't see it good enough, and Anthony won with an incomplete chest piece and his sleeve was not a full sleeve, I liked cleen's sleeve the best.

Here is some full frontal nudity from my Lived In Tattoos - Sunday takeover, wanted to share on LST though... Falcon - Bobby Tripp 2009 Escher Dragon - Steve Batt 2005 Polkadot Dragon - Scott Rusnak 2012 Psych Tiger - OllieXXX 2012 Dragon Eyes - OllieXXX 2013 Collar Snake - Shawn O'Connor 2013 ...this illustrates how it looks when tattoos from multiple artists blend together. also what happens when you tattoo your ribs first and then the front after (i.e. space squeeze) - 2 questions that have been asked on this forum in the past.

  32. Inside of my right upper arm. Adding more floral elements to connect the inside and outside at my appointment next month. We both got tired, and the shop was closing. :-) Hurt like a fucker. That unexposed baby skin inside my arm (as you can see, I'm very, very pale) was excruciating.

  35. i think my mentality on ear tattoos is you should 'earn' your way onto your face - like - you should be pretty covered if youre at your face / head anyway - that just an opinion - if a person wants to start on the head / hands / whatever then go for it - dont listen to me

My full ass is tattooed and it definately ain't a secret anymore. Since my 7yo nephew saw the 'great wave' splashing out of my plumber's crack all he does is ask "Uncle Eric why do you have a butt tattoo?" and then all the kids laugh because he said "butt" haha.

    Ear Area Tattoos

I do like the idea of a future behind the ear tattoo though for myself, like silver dollar sized. Tattooing in/on the ear though makes as much sense as writing "serenity" or some shit on the sides of your finger. Why? To be edgy? It will look silly unless you have a lot of other tattoos going on. That's where the put ID tattoos on animals. A tattoo on the head will still show through when the hair grows in. You may not be able to fully make out the tattoo once the hair grows in, but there will be something fuzzy showing which will draw more attention to it and people will be curious and ask you. If you want a secret tattoo, make a proper tattoo on the torso or the thighs and keep it concealed by wearing clothes. If you are worried about going to the beach or pool and people seeing your tattoo...well, maybe tattoo is not for you. It's not for everyone. Don't be a tat-tourist.

I don't understand the idea of a "secret tattoo" on your head. A full bodysuit is literally more concealable.

  40. Thanks, @mmmsarah! It is addicitive. I stopped after one (really bad) tattoo for about 13 or 14 years, then I got a cover-up of that crappy tattoo, and I couldn't stop. Now 30+ tattos later, I am planning the next one all the time. :-)
