  1. Inside of my right upper arm. Adding more floral elements to connect the inside and outside at my appointment next month. We both got tired, and the shop was closing. :-) Hurt like a fucker. That unexposed baby skin inside my arm (as you can see, I'm very, very pale) was excruciating.

    Chest/Torso Tattoos

Here is some full frontal nudity from my Lived In Tattoos - Sunday takeover, wanted to share on LST though... Falcon - Bobby Tripp 2009 Escher Dragon - Steve Batt 2005 Polkadot Dragon - Scott Rusnak 2012 Psych Tiger - OllieXXX 2012 Dragon Eyes - OllieXXX 2013 Collar Snake - Shawn O'Connor 2013 ...this illustrates how it looks when tattoos from multiple artists blend together. also what happens when you tattoo your ribs first and then the front after (i.e. space squeeze) - 2 questions that have been asked on this forum in the past.

  3. @BrookR70 did nothing wrong by walking out on a walk in. If you don't feel comfortable, you are free to walk. You might not get a red carpet reception though the next time you step into the shop to set something up, so there's that too. But once those machines are set-up though, you're locked in ! Don't waste peoples time. Cheers

  4. i don't think this behavior should be encouraged. sounds exhausting. @BrookR70, i think this shop just wasn't the one for you. nothing wrong with deciding you are not comfortable with the process at particular shop and deciding not to get tattooed that day.

    Hello & Healing advice

Sometimes I see tattooers "tack" thin lines like that during a linework session to map out negative space and shading gradients. That would be my guess.

  8. In my 13 years of getting tattooed I have NEVER asked about cost of the tattoo upfront before getting started. I agree with the saying "if you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it" when it comes to tattoos. You either want the tattoo or you don't. Now, I will ask for an estimate on how many hours or sessions so I can do some really really complex calculus to get an idea of total cost. The shop rate is usually displayed somewhere and I see nothing wrong with asking the tattooer directly what the shop rate is (if it isn't posted) or what their hourly rate is. But that's when I'm already committed to getting tattooed at that point. Don't go shopping for the best rate, it's tacky. You either want the tattoo or you don't. So here's a tip...take the shop rate and multiply by the max number of hours you can/will likely sit for. Bring cash to cover that. I've always walked out of a tattoo shop happy with my session, left a generous tip and still have enough leftover cash in my wallet to spend on beer, weed and pizza afterwards. To echo our dude @marley mission above, just go get tattooed and you'll get a feel pretty quickly how much a good tattoo costs. You may even be shocked to realize they cost much less than you think.

  10. I don't read any of Brooks posts like he was shopping around for price, he was simply asking what an artist charged and they told him they had a shop price. If he asked multiple artists then yea, I agree that it's weird, but I don't read his posts like that. Do you guys really find it weird to ask the artist what they charge an hour or for an estimate on a piece for a walk-in? We aren't talking about scheduled appointments here.. There is no consult, there is no back and forth texting or emails, it's just showing up to the shop, talk to the artist and get a tattoo. Not everything needs 5 weeks of planning, especially not tattoos that are exact copies of Sailor Jerry flash..

  11. I think I'd have to take it by a case by case basis, but in general, I'd say no to this. I don't like the idea of getting tattooed being used by a business to sell something that isn't tattoos. The last tattoo I got was posted on the Black Claw instagram to show how good their needles work, and that's cool because that's tattoo-related, but fuck a bunch of "tattoo lifestyle" bullshit like hipster beard pomade or whatever fuckery people pitch at tattooed people. That seems really vulgar and tasteless, and not what I want from tattoos.

  14. It looks fantastic!! It's only a matter of time before I move inside my biceps...it's interesting to hear the pain differential between the inside and outside, I wonder if the nerves for the forearm are centered inside in the same way that the lower leg nerves are centered on the inside of the knee (I learned that after knee surgery on the inside of my right knee cut across those nerves - I have no feeling on the outside of my right knee unless I rub the incision. Then I can feel it on the opposite side of my knee.)

  19. i think the topic itself is awkward - of course #1 discussing money can be awkward in general but i think there is an etiquette that should be there through different parts of the process of getting tattooed i kinda find the whole thing pretty sacred in a way and to focus your energy on prices and price differences (remember that was the intent of the OP's thread) to me - its poor form i do talk money with my tattooer i simply state what i want and what my budget is i.e. - "do you think my budget of 'x' dollars would work for what i'm looking to get?" by now i have a feel for it so i usually know how much a piece will cost i try to do 100% cash - also good form imo to each their own on this issue but this pretty much sums up my feelings on the topic oh - forum members... dont forget to throwdown in the lowdown - a much more entertaining thread i assure you

  20. Thanks Bongsau! I got Saniderm and a wetsuit. Much appreciated.

  21. I wouldn't be as concerned (after 2 weeks) with the water - it's fresh water, not chlorinated. I would be more worried about banging the tattoo against a rock or rubbing against the raft. Wear wet suit pants, problem solved!

  22. I got tattooed at the comic con in town last year. But only because the tattooer was in town for the show. The comic con organizer also owns and operates a popular tattoo studio / collectible shop in town so there is a dedicated area for the tattooing. It was a funny experience. Lounging half naked in my sunglasses with people in cosplay outfits getting nerd tatts. The newspaper photographer was all jacked (and polite) asking to take a photo of me once we started the tattooing. Some hipster Lucas Films tattoo artiste said all the white in my backpiece was "so unnecessary". And I saw the black power ranger while getting my smallest tattoo. It was fun but I was in-out and went home and ordered pizza.

    Upcoming Tattoos

Yeah, I came crawling back to the Instagram because of 1) good friends of mine asking me nicely to come back and 2) boredom at the Long Beach Airport because TSA is a breeze and I miscalculated my timing. I told myself "no more tattoos for awhile" and obviously that didn't work out. But I'm going to make another attempt at a sabbatical after June. We'll see how that goes. Just finished this yesterday. And thankfully no one was around to watch me die except Jason.

  27. I don't ask price anymore, when I get an appointment for what I want with the artist I want,I expect a deposit, but I really don't care and don't ask what the price or hourly rate is, and yes,I always make an appointment for a consultation.

  30. Update May 20.... Today was Session #2 with Scott Ellis at Triple Crown Tattoo. 5.25 hours in the chair with only a few short breaks. Some of these sections are pretty swollen, and I have one area behind my arm that is super red and angry... but other than that, it looks great. Gonna be a long weekend of feeling sunburnt and frequent washing, and hopefully it will heal as quickly as the line-work. Tomorrow I'm going to the movies, so no need to move it all day. Ephemeral Tattoo Ink

but you're trying to sell the idea or possibility of a temporary decoration to a crowd that is all about a real and permanent art form. Perhaps the commercial aspect of this start-up (honestly non-tattoo) business would go over better on Shark Tank, but the above discussion and outcome on a forum of tattoo enthusiasts was pre-determined.

  34. This is so strange. Do people not realize that you are changing the texture/appearance of your actual skin when you get a tattoo...? Even if you didn't care about tattooing tradition, I mean...it's not like your skin is a whiteboard that you can just erase and re-tattoo over and over again. Unrelated, but I have a plugin for chrome that replaces millennial/millennials with snake person/snake people respectively, and it never fails to entertain me.

  37. I think the photos in @otisc's review also illustrates another important thing...importance of protecting your tattoos from sun exposure, especially while it's still peelin' and healin'. that sun hits hard and fast !

    Tattoo Pet Peeves

I don't like small tattoos. I don't like tattoos that are self-consciously tasteful. Tattoos should be large, bold, and at least somewhat obnoxious.
    1 point
  39. no real pet peeves i think - i really dont care what other people do with regards to their tattoos maybe people expecting their tattoos to be perfect and obsessing about minor imperfections oh - and people who constantly talk about getting tattooed but never do guess i do have pet peeves :)

  40. I have 2 full sleeves, a full pectoral done, the back of my calf done, and a couple of other small random regrettable pieces (that will eventually be covered), and I still know next to nothing about tattoos and tattooing. When I give advice or an opinion, I try to make sure that I preface it with "for me, with my tattoos..." I really can't stand "know it alls", especially on something that is as permanent as a tattoo. When the artists in the shop talk about tattooing, there are so many things that we (not professional tattoo artists) don't even think to think about. Everything from passing the epidermis and keeping the ink in the dermis, to coil and rotary and pneumatic tattoo machines, to needle speeds and depths, to bloodlines, to colour blending.... But yeah, please share your in depth knowledge and never ending bank of advice with me! It's all good though, my favourite is when I'm wearing long sleeves and someone with about an hour of experience under the tattoo needle is counselling me about tattoos. Then I pull up my sleeve to check the time [emoji2] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
