  3. I somewhat disagree about the usefulness of Instagram for evaluating tattoos. It's a tool, and like all tools, you need to know how to use it. I had a tattooer tell me once when I was getting tattooed by him that it's not a tattoo until it's healed and settled in, and I agree with him. Pictures of fresh tattoos don't tell you that much. I'd go so far as to say that pictures are of pretty limited use in general: the mark of a good tattoo is how it actually looks in the skin and how it ages with you. It's not about that fresh photo, it's about how it looks five, ten, forty years down the line. I also understand that for someone just getting into tattoos that you maybe don't have the exposure to seeing nice, lived-in tattoos that comes from hanging around tattoo shops, conventions, with other tattooed people. Instagram is an easy access point, but it isn't everything. To the OP, I'd say that tattoos are a process of figuring out what you like and what you want out of tattoos. If there's a tattooer whose work you really like aesthetically, by all means get tattooed by her! Do your research, of course, but there gets to be a point where you just have to jump in and do it. Maybe your tastes will change, maybe what you thought was good work isn't--maybe not though!--but that's all a part of getting tattooed. Don't stress out about it, and have fun getting tattoos that make you excited.

  4. instagram - to me - love it or hate it - is a game changer for evaluating what to expect from a tattooer its not everything - but its huge i like when artists post regular work not everyone does this but when i can go a year or 2 deep into someones IG and i see hundreds of tattoos they did well that says something if you see a consistent body of work that pleases you then you can feel confident that you will probably be pleased with the outcome of your tattoo like i said - its not everything but its a big thing in the current processes of choosing an artist i personally love IG i have mentioned to a few artists that i liken it to growing up and looking at the sports pages following your favorite athlete well - i dont follow sports these days like that but i like going onto IG with a cup of coffee and checking out the latest pieces of awesomeness that my favorite tattooers have posted anyway good luck in your search i also am a big fan of the LST interview section fun stuff and you'll get some good perspective on the world of tattooing

  6. About two days before I was scheduled to go in to get my first tattoo, I was listening to National Public Radio. They have a segment called Health In A Heartbeat. That day's subject was the high incidence of medical issues associated with DIY stick and poke tattoos - infection, Hep C, HIV, allergic reactions..... The final recommendation was to always go to a professional tattooist that operates a clean shop with sterile equipment. When the most liberal broadcasting venue in the country recommends against something that is the epitome of personal choice, I listen.

  7. 1st thing = don't be in a hurry. take time to educate yourself. this forum is excellent for that. so is Instagram. 2nd = learn about the different styles of art that are available 3rd = follow some of the artists that you enjoy, and absorb how they do what they do - and how they relate to others in their field within a few weeks or months you should be getting a feel for what "quality" is, but ultimately what is pleasing to your educated eye is what will bring your lasting enjoyment.

Amen! I have a friend like that. I have had to remind her that while she may think her foot tattoo or chest tattoo didn't hurt, they are also outline tattoos that were over in under 30 minutes.

  10. Received my first tattoo "Saint Christopher" on this day 13 years ago from the one-and-only Steve Batt (Edmonton, AB). "Look kid, I'm not going to draw the Last Supper. You want a tattoo today or not?" I can still smell the speedstick scent he used to apply the stencil. And in an ironic twist of fate, with the fresh tattoo of the patron saint of travel on a swollen arm, we got in a car accident 5 minutes after leaving the shop. The tattoo is as rich, bright and colourful as it was the day it was made. In fact it keeps looking better each year as it ages. Dropped in this afternoon to see Sensei Steve and thanked him for 13 years of capital "Q" quality tattoos he has made for me. cheers everyone !

    Tattoo Pet Peeves

I noticed this weekend at the convention that people with tiny tattoos on their wrist or a small black tattoo outline on their ankle consider themselves tattoo experts. I know they are excited, and they feel part of a club, but dude. You are not an expert because you have an infinity symbol on your wrist or your kid's name written on your ankle. They know EVERYTHING because they have a five-minute $50 tattoo of their sorority name on their wrist or inside of their fingers. It was hilarious and also very weird. I like that they refer to people without tiny tattoos on their wrists as plainskins. Um, no. Just no. Also, as an aside, I hate the term "plainskins." I don't judge anyone for not having tattoos. They aren't plainskins. They are just people who don't have tattoos.

  14. I'm an IT manager with long hair and tattoos. I usually wear jeans and T-shirts, unless I'm meeting with the client. It's funny to meet sales people who think I must be some kind of minimum wage lowlife and then watch their whole attitude change when they run my credit report and find out how much I make.

    Cover up Help

I don't blame you for wanting to cover it up. ;-) I covered up a very small flower (ugly and badly tattooed) on my foot in roughly the same place. Had to go dark to cover it up, but I love it. You can still see the old tattoo, but I don't mind. I'm happy with it.

    Multiple Session

I know this thread is sort of old but I'm flying to Berlin soon (again - 3rd time in just under 2 years) and am finally finishing a full back over 2 days with the very talented Sara Rosenbaum. I want 2 smallish (not too small obviously) forearm pieces at AKA studio and decided to go on the 3rd day in Berlin to get both pieces at once. Crazy? Perhaps. Coming home a happy boy? Definitely. Will report on the pain, the results, and if it was a ridiculous idea! Below my unfinished back...

  21. We buy pre sale Riot Fext tix around Thanksgiving and they just announced today that the original Misfits lineup will be reuniting after 33 years to play this year. The rest of the lineup should be out soon but that was a nice icebreaker of a release. Gonna see how long the line is for the Elm Street Tattoo Friday the 13th thing tonight. and then I have an appointment with Marina Inoue at the Elm Street Tattoo Festival next week. All in all, a good day.

    Cover up Help

It looks like it would be a doable cover up with some darker colors. Location might mean it has to be a smaller tattoo though... I'd do a little running fox or some flowers, personally. Or ocean waves... I vote cover it up if you don't love it Sent from my Z755 using Tapatalk

    Ear Area Tattoos

When I commanded an Army Artillery Battery back in 1983/84 it was a missile unit and we had some female soldiers, NCOs and officers. One day during an inspection I began to chew out a young female soldier because she was wearing blue star earrings - not allowed in uniform. After I got done, she reached up and tugged on her ear lobes. Yup. Tattoos. Although my experience in tattoos is limited, I've had a lot of experience working with people who are facing tragedies and the emotions that go with it. Making a decision to get a tattoo like this - given the timing and emotion - is not something I'd recommend, either. Wait. Heal. Consider. Maybe you'll come to the same decision later...and maybe not.

  28. A few that I've dealt with: 1) "Does it hurt?" Not as much as when I watched friends bored in the shop tattoo each other's toes. 2) People poking my tattoos. Seriously, fucking stop. I just met you and I'm not poking you. Don't poke me. Usually, I just poke them back in the same place. It gets weird. 3) "What does your mother think?" She loves them and thinks I'm wonderful. 4) "What about when you get old?" I'll be more badass looking than you with the rest of the badasses in the old folks home. 5) "You can't get a good job with that" I'm a web developer (and decently well known in my niche). Nobody gives a shit what I look like, and most never see me. They also make these shirts with sleeves that go to your wrist. They're called long sleeved shirts. Pretty cool, eh? Just to name a few. I'm sure many of you get the same. Also, the strange looks when you do general things like hold the door open for people; like tattoos immediately mean I'm an asshole.

I don't like small tattoos. I don't like tattoos that are self-consciously tasteful. Tattoos should be large, bold, and at least somewhat obnoxious.

You find experts in anything you do. People generally get excited about what they like and want to appear very knowledgeable. And with tattoos they also want to appear tough - "like I sat for 10hrs straight", I hear this brag statement so often for the most unsubstantial tattoos it is nauseating. I'm like, good for you that must have hurt! But when it's obvious they got grey lined, then lined, then re-lined again and then delicately grey shaded I'm like suuuure bud that must. have. hurt (your pocket) ! But whatever, I know what's up with my tattoos and my tattooists and what it really takes to go the distance, so good for them. I guess my peeve is people asking about your tattoos. They don't sincerely ask about your tattoos. Nobody gives a shit about your tattoos. Maybe I'm being a little melodramatic...but 90% of the time being asked about your tattoos is simply the unsolicited invitation for people to just talk and show off their own. It is a penis-measuring contest. People love to talk. And love hearing themselves talk. And perhaps I'm no different. I mean really I post here at LST often because this is one of the very few outlets I have (aside from the tattoo shop) where I can wax about tattoos and my experience with honesty (and feel like I have an audience haha). So peace to the LST cats for reading my words, whether you reply or care. Or you can just scroll past, who cares! There is a lot of ego and attitude in the tattoo scene. So perhaps the lesson for me here is to ask people about their tattoos (in person) more often when i do see something cool or fresh. Everybody has their own story to tell. It's all good though. Just keep getting tattooed because you enjoy it. Enjoy it for yourself. The people who truly are ass-deep (literally) into tattoos no what's up and will keep the culture thriving, pet peeves or not.

  34. no real pet peeves i think - i really dont care what other people do with regards to their tattoos maybe people expecting their tattoos to be perfect and obsessing about minor imperfections oh - and people who constantly talk about getting tattooed but never do guess i do have pet peeves :)

I know what you mean about people being instant experts. My tattoo was 5 hours and I still would be wary giving advice or acting like I know it all. I especially hate people with tiny tattoos who say tattooing doesn't hurt, like they are really tough. Mine didn't hurt for the first hour either, try sitting there for the whole day tho!

  37. Sorry you are going through all this with your Dad. Unfortunately, many people let their own prejudices, likes and dislikes get in the way of meaningful discussions and relationships. What I love about what you write is that you are obviously happy and confident with who you are. Lots of people never get to that point. Never lose that. People who are true friends and who love you won't impose their own beliefs on you - they may not agree with you but they accept that you have the same right to your beliefs as they. As a (as of today) 61 year old, and president of a small college, I get lots of my staff, faculty and students wanting to know if my tattoo is real or not. They want to see it to be convinced. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. I was at an event last evening out in the community and I had several people asking, again, if I really did it or if it was fake. Too funny. My wife just rolls her eyes and smiles.

  39. Finished this 3/4 sleeve a couple of weeks ago. Right before my artist moved out of state :( I give him a lot of credit for not killing me for being picky about the details. He'd never seen an M-16 or any kind of tank up close in person, but he was willing to tweak the drawings until I was happy. I won't even repeat the words he said when he realized how small the lettering on the dog tags would be! He was able to get back at me when we got to my elbow though...not so fun, but thankfully quick. The words behind the Soldier's Cross are the Army Values (that part is on the underside of my arm). The "tank" is an M113 that I drove in Iraq for a year...my baby :) I am extremely happy with how it came out! Wildcat
