I had my first session with Steve Moore yesterday and we finished up the outline for my Monkey King. I have about 48 hours of tattooing under my belt so far and this outline session was only 3 hours, but the most uncomfortable and painful 3 hours yet! I've read a lot on full backs and apparently they can be quite sharp, but I had a hard time in quite a few spots. For example, often I can keep my breathing and just flow through the pain, but this session had me clenching my jaw, face and just suffering. Steven started chatting with me and it really helped distract me. Steve Moore is absolutely a professional. He researched tons for this piece. He looked at photographs of monkeys, martial artists, and other reference pictures. He mentioned that he debated about how to put the orientation of the Monkey King's foot and used a martial artist's monkey style to duplicate it. I think it looks amazing and the details on it just blew me away. I love how Steve put our collaboration ideas together. Anyways, here's the drawing After three hours of outlining Got my next session in February. Dreading it a bit, but also very excited haha

  2. Obviously it's down to what you prefer, but personally I'm not into shading "around" a tattoo in general. I think it ends up looking like a blob on the skin. A crisp, clean line is attractive and looks better from far away. So I'd get it touched up darker but leave the edges alone. My 2¢

  3. I agree with what @Valpolicella wrote. It's nice to keep a clean shaped outline on the tattoo.

    Hello from Canada

Hey LST forum, I'm a new member from Canada. Recently started collecting tattoos and have about 51 hours so far under my belt. I have work from Augis, Carlos Angarita, Domantas, and recently Steve Moore. I'm looking to contribute to this forum and see more excellent tattoos! Thanks, Leo

  9. @Sagesebad Hello and welcome! I think with that design, if you find the right artist it could be done. But it would mean removing a big part of the lines from where they are most concentrated and save the most important ones only. Also I believe that with a kind of weird, abstract idea like this you will have to find a good tattooer that works in this style and that has a lot of experience with positioning bigger shapes on the body, otherwise I think it could look very odd. But providing you find the right artist and you put trust in her/him it could work. Maybe if you have the attitude that you want something like this and put trust in an experienced artist to redraw it into a tattoo that works technicaly and suits the area of the body.

    Latest tattoo lowdown.....

So I was hanging out at my local shop going through Piotrs new book full of old woodblock prints and I saw in the corner of a Kuniyoshi diptych depicting Taira no Tomomori these little fish samurai dudes, I told him you don't see enough fighting fish, usually just rats and frogs carrying swords, and he sketched/painted this guy up for me. 16. Currently on my nyc tat-cation. First up was Eli Quinters. Next is Hillary Fisher White. When I first got to jfk airport, I was charging my phone at an outgoing terminal and the loudspeaker guy at the desk was listing people that needed to come see him and named Richard Stell. Didn't see him though.

started this end of '13 with rich hardy in krakow, poland. then i travelled to london, paris and london again to finish it few weeks ago. so relieved that i finally don't have to get through that pain again. although the shading during the last 3 sessions was so easy in comparison to the lines. anyways i can only repeat that rich is the nicest guy. everyone should get tattooed by him if he is around. merry christmas everyone!

  19. I figured it was time to contribute! I've really enjoyed all your pics/post the last couple years...good stuff. This is my mountain goat piece. I'm into it 60 of estimated 70hrs but who we kidding...I'll keep going. I've been flying down to Guru Tattoo in San Diego from the Pacific Northwest every other month since March. The artist is Aaron Della Vedova. I've been doing two 6 hour sessions each visit accompanied by a miserable flight home. I had an existing shoulder piece/mountain scene that he tied into. I'm heading down next week for another beating. This is where I'm at so far...
