I guess I'll join in on the sharing fun (even though most of you have already seen this on Mike's instagram). Progress from my session at Pagoda City Tattoo Fest: About 31 hours total so far. So maybe we are about 1/2 done?6 points

Sorry for not responding to everyone earlier, I posted that right before sitting down for dinner but oh man, thank you for the overwhelming positive response! @Cork so insanely cool to see all of that as a process!! Must have been neat to put those photos together and take a trip down memory lane with all of it. I also have taken pain killers for getting the linework done, and you are absolutely right about it not doing a whole lot as far as actually dulling the pain. You definitely still feel everything and it is pretty intense, it just isn't quite so brutal and immediate. @pidjones thank you! I figured instagram wouldn't be the right place for this one, the format is so irregular for photo sharing. @Pugilist thanks, Anna! Also very impressed with that as well, can't fathom actually trying to draw that. @MrToby Thank you! The artist is Kahlil Rintye at Tattoo City in SF. @Diehardonvhs @Lance @sophistre @mmikaoj @Rob I @hogg @suburbanxcore Thank you guys very much! Means a lot! @BrianH WOW WOW WOW SO SICK! Long shot but I want to see if Rubendall will do a small filler on my foot. He was really impressed with my collection so fingers crossed he will consider it, especially since I don't have any appointments this year... :(3 points -
Hi everyone I started here my reseaches for a tebori artist to get serious irezumi done on me, and tanks to this thread and you guys, I'm getting tattoed by Horitoshi 1 sensei since two years now I had left this forum after the beginning of my japanese journey and went back few days ago, and saw that a lot of you may have some questions about the Horitoshi familly, how to get in touch, how is it like and so on. I feel I may be helpfull to some of you, and repay a bit of the help I found here, and the nice time I'm having now so... anyone, feel free to ask, if I can help, my pleasure. Mata ne!3 points

@cltattooing It's wizard stuff for sure. There are a lot of great things about tattoos and social media, but one of the bad things is that it's so easy to be overexposed to them. Being able to open Instagram and flick through literally hundreds of great tattoos means that most tattoos become more or less forgettable. Yours is exceptional though. I can't think of seeing anything quite like it, and that is so rare. I guess one of the nice things too is that it takes such a high skill level to pull that off that you're unlikely to see many imitators anytime soon.3 points -
This is my first post, so I apologize for just jumping in, but I have advice to offer. Most tattooers who are making appointments for the convention will have their e-mail listed in their IG bio. Those that don't are probably just taking walk-ups. If you really want to seek advance booking and the artist doesn't provide information, call the shop and politely let them know you've exhausted your resources and would like to know about booking the artists at that convention. You'll likely find that they are only taking walk-ups. The best thing you can do for yourself and your artist is have an idea of the tattoo you want from that artist that fits with that artist's IG portfolio and let them take it from there.3 points

What is the forum for, if not mutual support in getting and owning good tattoos?2 points

@soraya, so glad you are "coming out of your shell". I word a prayer for our congregation in Sunday morning worship about 50% of the time. I'm usually the oldest male present. I have worn short sleeves exposing my forearm tattoo since the weather became warm enough for them. Doesn't bother me at all. What is the difference between makeup, clothing with designs, and tattoos? Just because the first two can be removed or changed they are approved? Tattoos (at least for me) represent much more thought. But then, most of our praise team have tattoos, some more than me. The preacher has none but his wife has told me that she has one on her hip that she would like to have enlarged down her thigh. I guess we aren't very traditional, but in today's church we are fairly main stream. I try to live by my tag line (Love 'em all.... Let God sort 'em out.), and don't assume that others are judging me, either.2 points

So... I was on vacation last week, and as usual on vacation, I was not very concerned about my tattoos showing, but this time tried to imagine that I was in my home town. I attended a lecture at the local historical society - partly as a tattoo visibility experiment, since this was the sort of place where if I was at home, I might feel very uncomfortable letting my tattoos show, since it would be a conventional crowd. I wore a sleeveless top so my half sleeves were fully on display. I didn’t take a sweater as a cover, so I had nothing to fall back on if I panicked. I was really nervous, and felt very conspicuous at first, and almost wanted to leave, but I stuck with my plan and calmed down. I got a few subtle looks from some older ladies before the lecture started, but they were not very obvious. During the Q & A I forced myself to be a little bold and raised my hand high to ask a question, and I was quite aware that my tattooed arm was up in the air for everybody to view. There was a reception afterward and I deliberately went up to a few older ladies to talk, and we chatted nicely and there were no comments or stares, although I did catch a few glances when I walked away. So that was a successful outing that I can build upon. For the rest of the week, I was just out and about in short sleeves every day all day. When on vacation I generally don’t worry about my tattoos showing, but this time I consciously committed to have my ink visible constantly. I got a few glances - some accompanied with frowns. I really tried to be aware of my feelings at those moments. When I saw the glances, I started to get uncomfortable and wanted to escape, but I reminded myself that I was ok, just different, and that those people’s glances don’t matter. Nobody made any negative comments, so I didn't have to deal with that. That will be more uncomfortable. I did have a very positive experience: I was shopping and saw a woman with a beautiful floral tattoo winding from her bicep to her forearm. So I went to the table where she was shopping, and like @iowagirl, I deliberately reached out to pick up something so my arm would be in her field of vision. She commented on the sweaters on the table and I responded, and then said that she liked my sleeves, and I complimented her on her flowers, and we talked for a few minutes about tattoos. I told her I was trying to get comfortable having them show, and she said “Just do it. Don’t worry about other people think.” She said she used to worry about reactions, but eventually stopped worrying about it. So we chatted for a few minutes about tattoos. That was so cool, and I loved the “matter of fact” tone of the conversation - we were just two tattooed girls talking about our tattoos. The few times when I've had those kinds of experiences, I feel like I'm floating. I feel like I’ve talked to a soul-mate, somebody who understands. It feel so good, and it makes me proud to be part of the tattooed crowd, and glad that I chose to be different. So all-in-all it went well. It felt good to be in the open with my ink, and I was able to The next test is to try it now that I’m home.1 point

@idyllsend WOW! that is really beautiful. I can't wait to see that finished. Here are a few pics from my last session with Chad K. We are essentially finished but he does want to do one more session in November for some touch ups and stuff. For all intensive purposes though, here is my finished back! I am so stoked!!! It is so vibrant and bold and I think you can read the image from a few miles away :) Chad put in some really neat little details in this last session. Not sure they will be visible in these "just finished" pics, but I will try to remember to post a healed pic. He did some really cool things with the tongue and the teeth that I am pretty pumped with.. LOVE the eyes as well. I am super grateful. rob attaching pics from gallery as that seems to be the only way for me to edit them from being sideways. If they look sideways at first, just click the pic and it should right itself.1 point

^ laziness wins, @Graeme. i thought there might be a secret message in the upper cases from the last post, but it turns out it just says "BLACKHTIDHSTG". that's worse than "be sure to drink your Ovaltine" now it's your duty, @Isotope. check out these shops, book a flight, hotel, and an appointment, then post pics!1 point

So here is the remainder. Kongo Yasha Myo-o in his full glory from Dana Helmuth. This was pretty much the home stretch at this point. Once all the shading was done, the color was only about 1/3 of the remaining time I spent with Dana. I love Dana's snakes. Once mine got colored in, I couldn't stop staring at it, I still can't. Also everyone loves the blue, and so do I. It's bold, and it'll be awesome for a long time. I spent a lot of time at Read Street Tattoo in Baltimore and it was a great shop. The final session was in Dana's tattoo lair at his home in Maryland and it's a true honor to be a member of his back piece club. And the final obligatory baby picture, because I want to be as cool as @hogg.1 point -
I'm an old fart too. I'm all about "cash is king." However, I'll use PayPal to send a deposit to someone that isn't local. I've done this a couple of times. I've also received a Visa Gift Card for Christmas a couple times. So the first idea that came to mind was to put down a deposit somewhere that takes Visa. Safe to say that my parents never gave me a Visa Gift Card for Christmas ever again.1 point

Ohhh goodness, I would've been floating on *air* after a comment like that! How wonderful! - - - Updated - - - I like asymmetrical too, a lot. Once I started going on mine I decided I'll be taking it all the way across and down, but I think right now I have more along the lines of what you do, a smattering on one side and full on the other? I don't have a picture of my back as it is now, just separate pictures. If someone could point me in the direction of strapless tops/dresses, I'd love that. I'd rather have it as bare as possible in the back so as to show them off to the fullest extent! Staring--hell I do it too, I can't help it. I don't stare at someone for a rude reason, like a disfigurement or weird clothes, if I'm staring it's b/c of something I like-hair cut, hair color, tattoos, shoes, an outfit, jewelry etc..And I *try* not to be crazy stalker obvious. If I'm being stared at and I have a tank top on (or even short sleeves b/c you can see them peek at the bottom), I assume it's b/c of my work and I don't care if it's bad staring, like if people are horrified by it. If I've long sleeves on and am being stared at, I don't like it b/c I assume it's my extra weight or my bad skin. That makes me feel self conscious and bad about myself. My tattoos make me feel purty. And I will also admit when I know people are looking, I will turn to "look" at things I have no interest in to show off more. I'll stretch out my arm like ohhh I have an itch on my neck, so it shows the flow down my arm too. I have no shame.1 point

@Shaun1105 Haha yeah, I am a little later than usual with the post this year. Though January was probably a bit early. Brunch last year was fun so maybe we'll do it again this year because it seems easiest to coordinate a meetup before the convention starts. @exume It's totally worth the effort to get here, BUT I would say that Montreal poutine is imitation poutine. You have to go off island to get the good stuff. Here is poutine from Chez Ashton in Quebec City. You can't get anything close to this in Montreal.1 point
