  4. yeah, @BrianH beat me to it... I have a lighthouse too, hmmm I guess it looks like a candy striped ding-dong ! https://instagram.com/p/WYOEBohynQ/ The world is like that. People will see penis in all things that are cylindrical. Unless you got your lighthouse tattoo made by Dave Lum, I would get over it. You're tattoo looks fine

  8. ...and I proceed to quote you on it, sorry! But only because I know that the eyes are the most important part. Ideally, you want sunlight going into your eyes from an angle slightly above you. (Like the sun, natch.) We thought I had S.A.D. for a while, and I tend to be D-deficient if I'm not careful, so I had to learn these things. This is what I get for living and working in front of a computer, indoors, with no pants on, for years. I'm having to wear a lot more sunscreen than usual this year, @beez. Where is this constant rain I was promised when I moved to Seattle? All of the grass on the island is dying!

@soraya, I like your comment about how you, as a tattooed person, sometimes stare at tattoos, and you're right, so do I, in appreciation! So the stares are not always in horror or distaste, and sometimes I really wish someone would stop so I could look more closely to see them. You just don't know what someone will perceive as rudeness, though. I also like your comment, @Bunny Switchblade, about how people are people, and you aren't "a tattooed person" but just "a person," as this is a conversation I have with my daughters all the time. We tend to label people, categorize them, since it is human nature to do so, but it shouldn't be much different than, like you say, someone with jewelry versus without, or short hair versus long, spectacles versus contact lenses, etc.

    Latest tattoo lowdown.....

There were too many comments to reply to each one, but that comment was the best part of the entire takeover. I'd argue that it's hard to latspread while holding a one-month-old, but let's be honest: latspreading requires lats.

I never even thought or worried about something like this honestly! I got tattooed for me and most of the time I never think of myself as a "tattooed person".....I am just another human being that instead of adorning myself with gold and silver jewelry and the "latest fashion" decided to add some color to her body! I'd like to see people move past seeing others as "tattooed people".....nothing special....nothing different! We're all just people..... My 2 cents

@beez - Your experience at that airport sounds awful. I think that sort of experience is partly what I fear about showing my ink every day. That is what I mean about not wanting to be a spectacle. Like it or not, people are going to stare. And sometimes nice, honestly curious people stare. I mean, when I see a cool tattoo, I stare! (sorry folks!) And like your experience, when I have let my ink show, the negative comments/looks have also been from older folks. I'm no spring chicken, I take good care of myself and dress stylishly, so I probably look a bit younger. I do get it though - Older generations probably just can't get their head around why people would do something like that. The Whole Foods comment is funny! When I go there, I feel like I'm with "my people!" @sophistre: When I've been on vacation showing my tattoos, I've gotten a few comments from people who have never seen tattoos like mine (pretty dense half sleeve coverage). If they seem open, sincerely curious, and nonjudgmental, I love talking about my tattoos. Sometimes I think I've educated people a little bit, which feels nice. And I agree with the haircut analogy! Or a cool new outfit! you just want to be seen in it because it makes you feel good. And it feels nice when people compliment you, whether, "Oh, cute outfit!" or, "Your tattoos are really pretty." Funny though - people never would say that your dress looks disgusting, but they will say that about your tattoos. Oh well...

Too often we just see the tattoo and don't often get the chance to hear/share the intimate details behind each tattoo experience. Latest tattoo lowdown.....

Thanks @suburbanxcore, @ItsNewport, @polliwog, and @CABS. I had a lot of fun doing that, even though it was kinda weird to just blast two dozen photos of myself all day. It was really nice to revisit all the times I got tattooed and the stories and experiences that went with each piece. And the kind comments from people like you all (and others who I don't even know through LST) really had an impact on me. @Iwar has started something great, and I already have several ideas for people I want him to feature in future takeovers. :) - - - Updated - - - You saw my bedroom tribal post, right? ;) And I didn't show all my tattoos in the takeover, so you can just assume the ones I didn't show are terrible.

The green borneo roses story was my favorite. Like it's helpful to have a reminder that @hogg is a mere mortal.

  21. I know I posted it on one of the photos, but I feel bad for whoever has to follow @hogg's takeover. That was incredible. I had a friend who just kept texting me throughout the day every time a new one came up. Haha. I'd seen a lot of them from the gallery on here, but the stories were great and gave terrific insight.

I also thought tattoos had to mean something before I was allowed to get one. Depending on context, when people ask why you got a tattoo, I find more people mean it to be condescending. It's like they meant to say "Why would you do that to yourself?"

    Upcoming Tattoos

Just got my appointment confirmed with Horimitsu in November to extend my peacock sleeve! Super excited to travel to Japan for the first time and to be tattooed by such a great artist. Also really intrigued to experience Tebori, now just got to book some flights!

  29. Thanks so much for saying that- I sincerely can't tell you how much I needed to hear that. They definitely are awesome tattoos, and I don't think I'm going to mess with them. My wife and I were out walking the dogs last night, and I looked back to see our little female Boston crossing the street. She was excited and panting and looked exactly like the tattoo. I think the artist kind of unknowingly captured her "crazy look." She looks the same way when she has been running around the dogpark and is in the process of stalking her older brother for whatever he has in his mouth. I think you hit the nail on the head, though- I guess the look doesn't quite match what I had in my head, but it's still her and it's still some very cool ink that I will grow to love over time.

    Simple fix or not???

To pretty much any onlooker, you are a guy with two awesome Boston Terrier tattoos. Please please don't mess with them. Tweaking a solid tattoo because it doesn't match what's in your head seems like a bad road to go down, because what if you're still not satisfied? I know I'm just some rando on the internet, but I really like your tattoos and feel weirdly personally invested in your becoming happy with them as they are.

I don't know your dog and how the tattoo captures her likeness or not, but I love that tattoo. It has a lot of personality and is folky in the best way.

  32. Yeah, it was life-changing. I feel like I'm more... ME! Although I wore long sleeves for the first few months, it wasn't to hide a tattoo - it was to hide what I considered to be a BAD tattoo. After I had it re-worked some, I could accept it and show it. The execution is a little darker and a bit crooked with orphan bits, but maybe that depicts me better. My next will be upper arm half-sleeve, but I've already told the artist to try and extend it down a bit below the elbow, at least in part.
    1 point
  33. Basically this. At 20, I would definitely have hesitated, and probably stayed above the elbow. I'm turning 34 this year, I'm financially secure and settled into a profession that allows me to work at home, I live in an area of the country that's pretty liberal, and I've been waiting for over 15 years to get tattooed -- I really didn't think twice, to be honest. It was still nice to have a tattooer ask me if tattooing down to my wrists was okay, though. It felt nice to know it mattered to him. It was also kind of nice to know he was okay with tattooing them, because I felt like I had maybe officially crossed the line between being a plainskin noob and being A Tattooed Person. (It was Gilsdorf, if anybody's curious.) Here's a funny tidbit, though: During that appointment we were talking about the experience of getting tattooed generally, and I was laughing about how, even though I'm not very tattooed, I still find myself wringing my hands about running out of space. And Dan goes, 'I don't think you're 'not very tattooed' anymore, by civilian standards,' and I had to tell him that I think my perspective is now permanently warped by all the time I spend lurking around here, hahaha. Compared to LST's crew, I've barely even gotten started.

  38. I freak out about too much sun, and for the past 9 years I have been really happy with the usually gray Seattle weather. THIS SUMMER, BROUGHT TO YOU BY GLOBAL WARMING: MY TAN. I have a tan. This is a once in a lifetime event. (Actually 3rd in a lifetime). I am kind of freaking out over it though? All I'm thinking is SUN DAMAGE and I'VE RUINED MY TATTOOS. And it's actually causing me anxiety. Reading through this I can see that clearly I just need to relax and enjoy the fact that I've upped my Vit D and my outdoors time, but I do feel the anxiety in the pit of my stomach. Gaaaah. Thanks for listening, that is all folks.
    1 point
  39. You must be joking, right? ... right? Seriously, not that I'm even close to being a scientist, but having all those chemicals on you every day will probably be a bigger danger to your skin and your health than getting a bit of unfiltered sun. I used to be really paranoid with the sun and my tattoos, and get stressed if I had to be waiting for the bus for 20 minutes in t-shirt and no sunscreen on. It's not worth it, all that stress. Now I cream up when I know that I will be in the sun a lot. Normally I don't bother. It's easier to just move to the shade after a while if there is no 50+ around. Perhaps I tend to wear long sleeve shirts a bit more. I think it's a shame if you let some over-protectiveness around keeping your tattoos pristine stand in the way of having fun and enjoying life. You are going to age, your tattoos are going to age, and you will die eventually. (Could be that I have this attitude because I never cared about being a lot in the sun, getting a tan or hanging out at the beach anyway. It's not a part of my life, so when I do spend time in the sun I can allow myself without feeling some "guilt" around it. My favorite weather is when it's cold enough for normal length jeans, but you can walk around in a t-shirt if you want to. Oh, and also I live in Sweden so that helps, we only got 6 weeks of summer most years haha..)

    Tattoo placement

Placement is, in my opinion, the hardest thing about tattoos to understand, and it is also often the factor that distinguishes good tattoos from great tattoos. This probably isn't the most satisfying answer, but I think to really understand placement you need to look at real tattoos on people because pictures, especially the tightly cropped Instagram photos that make up most of what we look at these days, really give no sense of placement. Half the time you can't even tell what body part they're on.
